Film Diary: 2016
These are the movies and tv-shows that I have seen during 2016 - that I hadn't seen before. Some of them I have seen more than once during this year, and sometimes I may make that clear in my comments. I have also watched other films and shows that I had already seen, but those are not included on this list.

- DirectorJohn BoormanStarsJon VoightBurt ReynoldsNed BeattyIntent on seeing the Cahulawassee River before it's dammed and turned into a lake, outdoor fanatic Lewis Medlock takes his friends on a canoeing trip they'll never forget into the dangerous American back-country.A lot darker than I would have thought. The only thing I knew about it beforehand was the dueling banjos scene. The rest caught me by complete surprise - which I think is the way to see it, really. I'm just happy I didn't watch it with someone.
- DirectorIvan ReitmanStarsBill MurrayDan AykroydSigourney WeaverThree parapsychologists forced out of their university funding set up shop as a unique ghost removal service in New York City, attracting frightened yet skeptical customers.Everyone talks about it, especially those that grew up in the 80's. I just wanted to see a more modern, funny classic with Bill Murray in it.
Quite funny, but slightly disappointing. I also didn't understand why there were four of them when only three seemed to be useful to the plot. Still, there's something special about 80's comedies, and sometimes you just crave one. - DirectorHoward HawksRichard RossonStarsPaul MuniAnn DvorakKaren MorleyAn ambitious and nearly insane violent gangster climbs the ladder of success in the mob, but his weaknesses prove to be his downfall.Having seen the DePalma remake/reimagination, I wanted to watch the original and I was impressed. It felt much more thought out than I expected from an entertaining 30's action movie.
After seeing it, I wanted to see Muni in something else, so I watched "I am a fugitive from a chain gang". - DirectorJohn SturgesStarsSpencer TracyRobert RyanAnne FrancisA one-armed stranger comes to a tiny town possessing a terrible past they want to keep secret, by violent means if necessary. One of those movies that I couldn't tell you the plot of five minutes after the end credits. Not that it was complicated, I just forgot it. It was an alright movie with some nice dialogue exchanges, and a pretty cool main character.
Maybe I just wasn't that concentrated when I saw it. - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsRobert DonatMadeleine CarrollLucie MannheimA man in London tries to help a counter-espionage agent, but when the agent is killed and the man stands accused, he must go on the run to save himself and stop a spy ring that is trying to steal top-secret information.Really intriguing Hitchcock flick. I watched it a couple of times during the year, and it also led me into watching anything I could find with Robert Donat.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsJames CagneyPat O'BrienHumphrey BogartA priest tries to stop a gangster from corrupting a group of street kids.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsGlenn FordGloria GrahameJocelyn BrandoTough cop Dave Bannion takes on a politically powerful crime syndicate.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartJohn DallFarley GrangerTwo men try to convince themselves they've committed the perfect murder by hosting a dinner party after strangling a former classmate to death.A Hitchcock classic overlooked by Hitchcock himself. One of his best, in my opinion. The tension that comes from knowing "what's in the box" while half of the main characters don't, kept me at the edge of my bed all the way through.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action.
- DirectorJoseph L. MankiewiczStarsLaurence OlivierMichael CaineAlec CawthorneA man who loves games and theater invites his wife's lover to meet him, setting up a battle of wits with potentially deadly results.

- DirectorThom EberhardtStarsMichael CaineBen KingsleyJeffrey JonesA drunken Sherlock Holmes is really just a cover for the real detective, Dr. Watson.
- DirectorSidney J. FurieStarsMichael CaineNigel GreenGuy DolemanIn London, a wisecracking spy investigates the kidnapping and brainwashing of British scientists while dealing with the constraints of his agency's bureaucracy.A highly entertaining and clever spy thriller (even though none of the villain's plans are at all plausible in real life). The camera work is worth watching in and of itself.
I saw it at least twice this year. - DirectorGuy HamiltonStarsMichael CaineOscar HomolkaPaul HubschmidSent to East Berlin to retrieve a Communist defector, British spy Harry Palmer suspects the situation is not what his superiors believe it to be.
