Movies I own, in order of how much I enjoy and recommend them!
The order is based on many factors, and let's face it, you can NEVER really put your favorite movies (or at least, the ones you OWN) in order! But I gave it a shot based on timelessness, story, intrigue, rewatchability... also whether or not I think people have heard of the movie, if it is underrated or just overlooked. The likelihood of my plugging in the movie if a friend came over, pulled it off the shelf and said "I've never seen this."
---
Also, for me, movies like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Indiana Jones would just claim the front of the list as their own. I moved most of them down to mix up the order a little. Fret not fellow nerds.
---
I also tend to rate movies in their own genre, and also what is expected of them. Not everything is Lawrence of Arabia or Jurassic Park, but that doesn't mean it's terrible. Even if it's cheesy, was it entertaining? How much more really could have been expected of it given the subject matter? Action, Zombie or even Godzilla movies don't need inspired acting to be fantastic. Horror movies don't always have the best story, but they can be jaw dropping. My numerical ratings are also a layered result.

- DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks."Who are you?" is the most common line of dialogue. This film changed my life.
- DirectorJohn MiliusStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerJames Earl JonesMax von SydowA powerful warrior seeks to avenge the genocide of his people and the murder of his parents at the hands of a snake cult.Despite the aged special effects, the soundtrack gives me chills every time I watch it, and the story is timeless.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKaren AllenPaul FreemanIn 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsSam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumA pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose. It never ceases to amaze me how convincing the special effects are in this twenty year old movie. Why is it that even new movies don't look nearly as good? Nothing beats the familiarity of this music; even Lord of the Rings doesn't have as good of an orchestration. The acting, the camera work, the lighting, the locations, the massive and lifelike sets... they spared no expense.
And once you're really into this movie, even the facets of the production and numerous bloopers are wonderful! - DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.Chinatown meets Star Wars in this science-fiction noir masterpiece. I wish there were more movies like this one. The art direction in this movie is without comparison, and if you know the story behind why, you can see its presence in every shot.
I own "The Director's Cut" as well as "The Final Cut" of this movie. - DirectorWerner HerzogStarsKlaus KinskiRuy GuerraHelena RojoIn the 16th century, the ruthless and insane Don Lope de Aguirre leads a Spanish expedition in search of El Dorado.Dramatic, poignant and exciting, this was instantly one of my favorite movies. Flawlessly carried out by Kinski and a masterstroke by Herzog, this movie is perfect at every turn.
I admire how set in reality this movie feels. It never deviates from anything that really could happen, even down to a boat stuck atop a fifty foot tree. The realism draws you in and makes you fear every turn through a dense jungle.
Some people don't see a need to gripe about the lack of widescreen in both production of the film and its distribution... but I do. - DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsYôji MatsudaYuriko IshidaYûko TanakaOn a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime. This is a seamless, jaw-dropping story and presentation thereof. Every frame is a hand drawn work of art. The story also warns us about our own world through this fantasy realm, and that's something to appreciate in a world full of mindless entertainment. Larger than life, you instantly realize and appreciate why this movie was undertaken through animation. Someone let me borrow this once, and thereafter I ran out and bought my own copy.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordSean ConneryAlison DoodyIn 1938, after his father goes missing while pursuing the Holy Grail, Indiana Jones finds himself up against the Nazis again to stop them from obtaining its powers.
- DirectorTarsem SinghStarsLee PaceCatinca UntaruJustine WaddellIn 1920s Los Angeles, a bedridden patient in a hospital captivates a young girl with a fantastic tale of heroes, myths, and villains on a desert island.Tarsem amazes with this one. The locations are just dazzling.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States.Frightening to this day in its simplicity and theme, this movie haunted me for years. Its as if my level of enjoyment of it now is a psychological defense against how I really, innately feel about it.
I own 27 zombie movies and counting. This one, the one that srated it all and was brilliant in its execution, will always be my favorite. - DirectorStephen HopkinsStarsMichael DouglasVal KilmerTom WilkinsonA bridge engineer and an experienced old hunter begin a hunt for two lions after they start attacking local construction workers. This movie represents humankind's ability to overcome the odds, as well as what it means to be a man, or at least, to stand in the face of fear. There's something primal about it. Watching it with the knowledge that it is based on a true story (minus Michael Douglas, basically) makes it even more entertaining. This movie gets some pretty bad reviews but it is great on many levels.
- DirectorTom SaviniStarsTony ToddPatricia TallmanTom TowlesWhen the unburied dead return to life and seek human victims, seven refugees shelter in a house in the Pennsylvanian countryside. This nearly shot-for-shot remake of Romero's classic is a breath of fresh air into the original, although I don't view the original as aged so much as an untouchable classic.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.Frightening in setting and execution, John Carpenter's alien suspense horror is better every time I watch it.
- DirectorIshirô HondaStarsTakashi ShimuraAkihiko HirataAkira TakaradaAfter a dinosaur-like beast - awoken from undersea hibernation by atom bomb testing - ravages Tokyo, a scientist must decide if his similarly dangerous weapon should be used to destroy it.Can you imagine seeing this is theatres in 1954? Mind blowing.
I own 21 Godzilla movies and counting. - DirectorHoward McCainStarsJim CaviezelSophia MylesRon PerlmanDuring the reign of the Vikings, Kainan, a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry.I think on the box it says "Beowulf meets Predator." What a great way to describe this movie. The blend of science fiction with the iron age setting is captivating from the start.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsCary ElwesMandy PatinkinRobin WrightA bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.I've known people who are hardcore action movie fans, who also love this movie. I've seen people who worship their twisted horror collection who also have a worn out copy of this movie. This movie is good on so many levels.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsBruce WillisMilla JovovichGary OldmanIn the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay.Luc Besson came up with this when he was in high school. Indeed, the level of imagination and vision in this movie is indicative of a young man. Aging very well, I think this movie will be around for a very long time.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKate CapshawKe Huy QuanIn 1935, Indiana Jones is tasked by Indian villagers with reclaiming a rock stolen from them by a secret cult beneath the catacombs of an ancient palace.Whether you're a hardcore Indy fan, or just familiar with the series, this movie is better than you remember it to be. No really. Watch it again. Then watch Crystal Skull, or anything else that sucks. This movie is fun and dark at the same time.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellSteve BuscemiStacy KeachSnake Plissken is once again called in by the United States government to recover a potential doomsday device from Los Angeles, now an autonomous island where undesirables are deported.
- DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsKurt RussellJames SpaderJaye DavidsonAn interstellar teleportation device, found in Egypt, leads to a planet with humans resembling ancient Egyptians who worship the god Ra.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellLee Van CleefErnest BorgnineIn 1997, when the U.S. president crashes into Manhattan, now a giant maximum security prison, a convicted bank robber is sent in to rescue him.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellKim CattrallDennis DunA rough-and-tumble trucker and his side kick face off with an ancient sorcerer in a supernatural battle beneath Chinatown. This movie is brilliance. Sheer brilliance.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostKate AshfieldThe uneventful, aimless lives of a London electronics salesman and his layabout roommate are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse.Hilarious, and up to snuff for even the most fickle zombie cinema conoisseur, like myself. "A romantic comedy... with zombies." Well put.
I tend to prefer shuffling, slow zombies, and this movie has those ones. It seems to go well with the story; some of the characters are lazy, the zombies move slowly. - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsGary OldmanWinona RyderAnthony HopkinsThe centuries old vampire Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker's fiancée Mina Murray and inflict havoc in the foreign land. With a lack of computer special effects, this movie always bends my brain. Although a self proclaimed horror movie and not very scary, I view this movie as more of an adventure piece.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsJeff GoldblumJulianne MoorePete PostlethwaiteA research team is sent to the Jurassic Park Site B island to study the dinosaurs there, while an InGen team approaches with another agenda.
