- DirectorSean ByrneStarsXavier SamuelRobin McLeavyJohn BrumptonWhen Brent turns down his classmate Lola's invitation to the prom, she concocts a wildly violent plan for revenge. An absolutely brutally original breath of fresh air. By far the best horror film I've seen out of Australia. The premise here is so sick and unique, it has to be seen to believed. Fatal Attraction meets Hostel / Texas Chainsaw.
For Fans of: Wolf Creek, Pretty in Pink, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Fatal Attraction, - DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex ReidA caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators. The ultimate in claustrophobic chick flick horror. The UK creature feature answer to "Alien.
For Fans of: Alien - DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoByun Hee-BongPark Hae-ilA monster emerges from Seoul's Han River and begins attacking people. One victim's loving family does what it can to rescue her from its clutches. The movie you wanted Godzilla to be. The be all end all of foreign monster movies.
For Fans of: Cloverfield, Super 8, Godzilla - DirectorEli RothStarsJay HernandezDerek RichardsonEythor GudjonssonThree backpackers head to a Slovak city that promises to meet their hedonistic expectations, with no idea of the hell that awaits them. The film that put torture porn on the Hollywood map. A must see for any horror fan.
- DirectorGreg McLeanStarsNathan PhillipsCassandra MagrathKestie MorassiThree backpackers stranded in the Australian outback are plunged inside a hellish nightmare of insufferable torture by a sadistic psychopathic local.Another brutal post-Hostel torture horror film, this one stemming from the Outback. Hard to watch at times but handles itself very originally in it's structure and unconventionality.
- DirectorScott DerricksonStarsLaura LinneyTom WilkinsonShohreh AghdashlooA lawyer takes on a negligent homicide case involving a priest who performed an exorcism on a young girl. The most prevalent complaint I hear from people who hated this film was that it wasn't enough of a horror film. I disagree, but this is a horror film that takes the form of a courtroom drama, which I found an intriguing premise for an exorcist themed film.
For Fans of: The Mothman Prophecies, The Exorcist, - DirectorIain SoftleyStarsKate HudsonPeter SarsgaardJoy BryantA hospice nurse working at a spooky New Orleans plantation home finds herself entangled in a mystery involving the house's dark past. The Voo-doo horror sub-genre is reborn in this film starring Kate Hudson. Some great performances here, incredibly atmospheric, suspenseful and it kicks Serpent and the Rainbow's ass.
For Fans of: Angel Heart, The Ring, Serpent and the Rainbow - DirectorDarren Lynn BousmanStarsDonnie WahlbergBeverley MitchellFranky GA detective and his team must rescue 8 people trapped in a factory by the twisted serial killer known as Jigsaw.Saw II, enough said. As a horror sequel it definitely ranks up there with the best, although I guess that's not really saying much...
- DirectorDavid MoreauXavier PaludStarsOlivia BonamyMichaël CohenAdriana MoccaLucas and Clementine live peacefully in their isolated country house, but one night they wake up to strange noise... they're not alone... and a group of hooded assailants begin to terrorize them throughout the night.Another lesser known horror gem from France. The superior Euro-counterpart to 2008's The Strangers.
For Fans of: The Strangers, High Tension, Martyrs, Inside - DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsTed LevineKathleen QuinlanDan ByrdA traveling family falls victim to a group of mutated cannibals in a desert far away from civilization.Wes Craven produced this remake to his 1977 classic, with surprisingly radical results. The film's brutality and superior cast definitely makes this a much more effective experience than watching the campy original. In laymens terms, as far as horror remakes go this ranks up there with the best.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsThomas JaneMarcia Gay HardenLaurie HoldenA freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.Easily the best Stephen King adaptation of the decade. An awe inspringly scary, suspenseful, nostalgic and at times relentlessly brutal monster movie. This is the hard stuff.
For Fans of: Stephen King, Cloverfield, Storm of the Century, - DirectorMichael HanekeStarsNaomi WattsTim RothMichael PittTwo psychopathic young men take a family hostage in their cabin. This is Michael Heneke's American re-make of his 1997 Austrian film of the same title. Both are masterpieces, but I find myself preferring this version. It is a shockingly brutal and relentlessly honest look at the harsh reality of violence, intended to disturb the viewer in such a way, that it stands effective as a commentary against the trivialization of death and violence in entertainment.
- DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsRose McGowanFreddy RodríguezJosh BrolinAfter an experimental bio-weapon is released, turning thousands into zombie-like creatures, it's up to a rag-tag group of survivors to stop the infected and those behind its release.Though not as good as it's Tarantino directed counterpart, Planet Terror still ranks up there with the best Zombie flicks ever made.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsBelén RuedaFernando CayoRoger PríncepA woman brings her family back to her childhood home, which used to be an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend.A sadly beautiful spanish horror film that engrosses you with it's beautiful cinematography and it's core mystery.
For Fans of: Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, The Others - DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsJohn CusackSamuel L. JacksonMary McCormackA man who specialises in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror.Though it's not on the same level as "The Mist", 1408 has an intriguing premise and evokes enough nostalgia from the Stephen King days of yore that this is a definite Must-See for any King fan.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsKurt RussellZoë BellRosario DawsonTwo separate sets of voluptuous women are stalked at different times by a scarred stuntman who uses his "death proof" cars to execute his murderous plans.Modern film master Tarantino puts his talents toward a horror film with awesome results. A homage to both the grindhouse horror flicks of the 70's and bad-ass chick movies in general, Death Proof is a fun, original and seriously satisfying dose of Tarantino.
- DirectorZev BermanStarsBrian PresleyJake MuxworthyRider StrongOn a trip to a Mexican border town, three college friends stumble upon a human-sacrifice cult. The epitome of post-Hostel, Borderland is another young tourists get entwined in some serious sh*t horror film. It's brutal but very well made. While not quite as good as Hostel, it's far superior to the generally panned Hostel II.
For Fans of: Hostel, Wolf Creek, Turistas - DirectorOren PeliStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMark FredrichsAfter moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.I saw this in theaters and laughed it off. Watched it in bed on DVD a few months later and was too scared to finish it. Do yourself a favor and make sure when you watch this you're all alone in your house and that it's late.
- DirectorJaume BalagueróPaco PlazaStarsManuela VelascoFerran TerrazaJorge-Yamam SerranoA television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying.Straight out of Spain, REC. is a terrifyingly realistic and claustrophobic zombie flick all filmed through the lens of a news camera.
For Fans of: Dawn of the Dead, Paranormal Activity, 28 Days Later - DirectorAlexandre BustilloJulien MauryStarsAlysson ParadisJean-Baptiste TabourinClaude LuléFour months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.Relentlessly gory and increasingly hard to watch, Inside is another extremely brutal horror film from France. The runtime is relatively short, around 75 minutes, but that's more than enough time to leave you traumatized for weeks.
- DirectorJuan Carlos FresnadilloStarsJeremy RennerRose ByrneRobert CarlyleSix months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes according to plan. While not as good as it's predecessor or Spain's REC., 28 Weeks Later stands as one of he few quality horror sequels in the history of film that can stand on their own.
- DirectorD.J. CarusoStarsShia LaBeoufDavid MorseCarrie-Anne MossWhen a teenager is placed under house arrest, he succumbs to despair and starts spying on his neighbors, hoping to spice up his life. This, however, leads him to witness a serial killer on the loose.Shia Labeouf stars in this teen cast pseudo-remake of Hitchcock's Rear Window. Suspenseful and thrilling, but also fun in a teen vigilante kind of way, this is a film that exists solely to entertain.
For Fans of: Fright Night, Rear Window, Cape Fear, - DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsAnna PaquinBrian CoxDylan BakerFive interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: an everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.My vote for best horror anthology film, Trick 'r Treat is incredible (puts Creepshow to shame) and one of the best Halloween horror films ever made. The stories intertwine perfectly and throws enough twists and shocks out that your jaw is likely to be dropped through most of it. It's a twisted good time and there's something here for everyone.
For Fans of: Creepshow, Halloween, Tales From the Darkside, - DirectorGreg McLeanStarsMichael VartanRadha MitchellSam WorthingtonAn American journalist on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile while trapped on a rapidly flooding mud island. The aussie film, Rogue is without a doubt the best killer gator film of all time. Take that however you like. Jaws on steroids.
For Fans of: Jaws, Open Water, Anaconda, - DirectorXavier GensStarsKarina TestaAurélien WiikPatrick LigardesA gang of young thieves flee Paris during the violent aftermath of a political election, only to hole up at an Inn run by neo-Nazis.Another brutal bloodbath from the French extreme horror movement. Frontiers is the modern euro answer to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and lightyears better than any of it's remakes or sequels.
For Fans on: Martyrs, Hostel, Deliverance, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
