- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsDaniel Day-LewisPaul DanoCiarán HindsA story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.Paul Thomas Anderson is just a wonderful director. From the gorgeous cinematography to the beautiful soundtrack, everything about this movie sprouts magnificence. Daniel Day-Lewis is a great actor and this is possibly his greatest performance. "There Will Be Blood" is definitely Anderson's finest work, and that's saying a lot given that he directed masterpieces such as "Magnolia" and "Boogie Nights", and although "No Country For Old Men" was a perfect film, "There Will Be Blood" actually tops it ("No Country..." won Best Picture over "There Will Be Blood").
- DirectorJoe JohnstonStarsBenicio Del ToroAnthony HopkinsEmily BluntUpon his return to his ancestral homeland, an American man is bitten and subsequently cursed by a werewolf. This will most likely surprise almost anyone looking at this list, but the 2010 remake "The Wolfman" is indeed one of my favorites. I think that the greatest thing that comes to a movie might actually be when the film feels easy. By that I mean that anybody with a camera could do it. With "The Wolfman" it feels like that, but it certainly isn't. Point is, it's very sweet. The film is a horror movie, but it's so goddamn fun to watch. I believe I've seen it, what, 10 times or so. I'll continue seeing it, it never, ever bores me. I can't really explain it, but "The Wolfman" is one of my favorite films of all time. I don't really know why, just is.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioEmily MortimerMark RuffaloTeddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place.Everything about this movie, the performances, the eerie tone, the Hitchcockian suspense, the terrific soundtrack, the gorgeous cinematography, the sudden plot twists, the feeling of not understanding anything that's going on, everything, is perfect. "Shutter Island" is one of my favorite films of all time, so, so very underrated. Scorsese's best (I might get offended for saying that, but what the heck).
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron. This counts as the trilogy, because I really feel they're meant to be one. I took one day off last summer, to watch the extended cuts of the three films in a row. That's about 10 hours of film, and I was never bored. The inner geek inside me explodes every time I see them, I think that's a good thing. Right?
- DirectorTerrence MalickStarsColin FarrellQ'orianka KilcherChristopher PlummerThe story of the English exploration of Virginia, and of the changing world and loves of Pocahontas.I've got to admit, "The New World" is the only Malick film I've seen. No worries! I will try to see all of them before I see "The Tree of Life" (his latest). But the criminally overlooked "The New World" feels like a masterpiece. There isn't much talking in the film, mainly just feeling, and Malick's an expert at that - creating feeling. Most films aren't for creating feelings (except the feeling of grossness while watching "Transformers"-like films), but the ones that are are often all very good. "The New World" is nearly three hours long, yet I could still watch it over and over again. It connects to me somehow, in a very emotional way.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsSam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumA pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.I've seen most of Spielberg's films, so I think it's allowed for me to say that this is his best of what I've seen. I watched "Jurassic Park" thousands of times when I was a kid, it brings back memories, it's very nostalgic I must say, and that's very odd given that I'm still not an adult yet :D. What's amazing really, is that he (Spielberg) could pull of this and "Schindler's List" the same year! He is truly a master of his craft, and "Jurassic Park" is the finest example of his work.
