STARMeter Top 25 of 2008

IMDb.com, Earth's biggest movie database, has released the list of our top 25 stars for 2008. These STARmeter™ rankings were not based upon critical assessments or box-office performance, but the actual search behavior of over 57 million users of IMDb.com. These results are an aggregate of weekly STARmeter rankings from IMDbPro.com, IMDb.com's professional subscription service designed specifically for people in the entertainment industry. IMDbPro.com (try a free, two-week trial) features contact information for over 100,000 names and more than 30,000 companies, international, domestic and daily box-office numbers, news from the Hollywood Reporter and much, much more. Take a look at the 2008 stars below:

25. Ryan Reynolds

(Last year: Uncharted)
Audiences said Definitely, Maybe to the handsome up-and-coming leading man, while Scarlett Johansson exclaimed a more enthusiastic "I do!" as the photogenic couple married in late September. Up next: a role alongside Hugh Jackman in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

24. Jason Statham

(Last year: Uncharted)
The reliable star of B-movie action flicks rose to the top tier with a great dramatic performance in The Bank Job, a turn around the track in Death Race, and more shirtless shenanigans in Transporter 3. He's now on tap for the highly-expected The Expendables.

23. Hayden Panettiere

(Last year: #3)
Heroes took a tumble this year, as did Ms. Panettiere's STARmeter status, but her cheerleader-turned-superhero was still one of the best reasons to tune in to NBC's once-golden hit. And she still looked radiant on every red carpet imaginable.

22. Edward Norton

(Last year: Uncharted)
The actor known for his intensity played perhaps his most intense role in the "reboot" of The Incredible Hulk, which performed solidly despite buzz that the star was less-than-enamored with the final product. Questions on a sequel still remain unanswered.

21. Natalie Portman

(Last year: #19)
The lovely Ms. Portman remained an IMDb favorite this year, even though she appeared in only one major film, the period drama The Other Boleyn Girl. Perhaps it was that appearance on Project Runway that got everyone all abuzz?

20. Mark Wahlberg

(Last year: Uncharted)
The Oscar nominee and producer of Entourage scored a minor hit with Max Payne and weathered the critical drubbing of The Happening, not to mention a hilarious Saturday Night Live parody. Say hi to your mother!

19. Keira Knightley

(Last year: #15)
Some still can't shake images of the actress in her beautiful green Atonement dress out of their heads, and she continued in the period-piece vein with the art-house indulgence The Duchess.

18. James McAvoy

(Last year: Uncharted)
Ms. Knightley's Atonement co-star eschewed the English countryside for mean streets filled with bullets and car chases in the summer hit Wanted alongside Angelina Jolie, and found himself to be a surprisingly effective action hero.

17. Ellen Page

(Last year: Uncharted)
This year's indie-film princess snagged an Oscar nomination for the hit comedy Juno, and proved she wasn't a one-hit wonder with a smart turn in Smart People. Next, she'll do the roller derby in Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It!

16. Scarlett Johansson

(Last year: #13)
After a string of not-so-great flicks (including 2008's so-so The Other Boleyn Girl), the blonde stunner bounced back with Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, an album of Tom Waits songs, and marriage to equally adorable Ryan Reynolds.

15. Leonardo DiCaprio

(Last year: #11)
The highly anticipated Body of Lies, which pitted Leo opposite Russell Crowe, failed to catch fire at the box office, but Oscar buzz is already revving up for his reunion with Titanic co-star Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road.

14. Zac Efron

(Last year: #7)
Now a bona-fide teen idol, Efron took his high school gig to the big screen for Disney's High School Musical 3: Senior Year, while making time for photo ops with girlfriend Vanessa Anne Hudgens and filming on his upcoming non-Disney comedy, 17 Again.

13. Jessica Alba

(Last year: #6)
Ms. Alba had the misfortune of starring in two of the year's most critically maligned films -- cheesy thriller The Eye and misbegotten comedy The Love Guru -- but with a new husband and baby, we have a feeling her mind was happily occupied elsewhere.

12. Miley Cyrus

(Last year: Uncharted)
Disney's million -- no, make that billion -- dollar baby hit the big screen in a big way with the IMAX celebration-of-all-things-Miley, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which was also candidate for the year's longest title of anything.

11. Tom Cruise

(Last year: #10)
It was a year of serious work for Mr. Cruise, who's now a studio head in addition to loving husband and dad, as he worked to bring Valkyrie to the big screen in time for Oscar qualification, though his cameo in Tropic Thunder was one of the year's funniest moments.

10. Gerard Butler

(Last year: #14)
The 300 star continued his winning ways, as P.S. I Love You became a surprise DVD fave among the ladies, and RockNRolla proved he still had what it takes to hang out with the rabble-rousing guys. Next up: it's rom-com fun in The Ugly Truth.

9. Will Smith

(Last year: #23)
Coming off yet another massive hit with I Am Legend, Smith turned the love-it-or-hate-it superhero flick Hancock into a major box office hit, and courted Oscar yet again with the redemptive drama Seven Pounds.

8. Kristen Stewart

(Last year: Uncharted)
Critics gave her lots of attention for her sensitive, stand-out performance in Into the Wild, but the population at large shreiked at her turn as the teen-girl heroine of the moment, Isabella Swan, in the highly anticipated vampire romance Twilight.

7. Megan Fox

(Last year: Uncharted)
No longer playing second banana to robots, Ms. Fox became a paparazzi fixture and buzz-worthy babe this year, snagging the lead in Diablo Cody's next flick, Jennifer's Body, and walking away with the otherwise-forgettable comedy How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

6. Shia LaBeouf

(Last year: Uncharted)
The It Boy of 2008 chased down villains and treasure alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, broke his hand filming Transformers 2, weathered an arrest scandal, and still had another flick come out this year (Eagle Eye). Busy much?

5. Angelina Jolie

(Last year: #5)
You can't turn around in a supermarket without seeing her on a magazine cover, and she played the press like a Stradivarius this year, giving birth to twins in France and doing the press rounds for Changeling, which may snag her a second Oscar nomination.

4. Brad Pitt

(Last year: #2)
In addition to the massive press attention he received this year, Mr. Pitt found favor with a group that's often eluded him: film critics, who took a shine to his comic turn in Burn After Reading and started talking Oscar for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

3. Heath Ledger

(Last year: Uncharted)
His tragic and untimely death by accidental overdose generated what's arguably the year's biggest pop culture story, and turned his last completed film, The Dark Knight, from an expected summer hit into a massive screen sensation. Will a posthumous Oscar follow?

2. Christian Bale

(Last year: #4)
The star of The Dark Knight found unexpected controversy on the opening of his blockbuster flick in London, where he was arrested on charges of assaulting his mother and sister. The charges were later dropped, as The Dark Knight went on to become the second-highest grossing film after Titanic.

1. Johnny Depp

(Last year: #1)
Mr. Depp now claims the top spot on the IMDb's STARmeter for the fifth year in a row -- even though his biggest appearances of the year were on the red carpet of the Oscars (where he was nominated for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) and at the MTV Movie Awards, where he snagged trophies for both Sweeney Todd and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. And fans couldn't stop talking about his upcoming roles in Michael Mann's Public Enemies (as John Dillinger) and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (as the Mad Hatter), as well as salivating at the concept of him playing The Riddler in the next Batman flick. Check back with us next year to see if that comes to fruition -- we're sure he'll be somewhere at the top of this list again!
