  • The festival takes place since 1981 and is considered to be one of the most important student film festival in the world.
  • In order to achieve a better public reception and to bring participating students nearer to the film and TV industry, the festival is celebrated in conjunction with the Munich Film Festival since 1988.
  • In 1998 the "Days of the German Film Schools" have been added in addition to the international competition.

VFF Young Talent Award
  • The VFF Young Talent Award has been inaugurated by the german Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten (VFF) in 1994 and is set up with DEM 35,000. The award is given to young directors and/or producers, which works have been screened at the festival and which have given the impression that they will be able to produce/direct interesting themes in a professional and market-conform way. A jury of three professionals, currently producers Matthias Deyle (Tele Norm Film), Jochen Ludwig (Manufactum Film & Fernsehproduktion) und Sven Burgemeister (TV-60), each year honors up to three young directors with the award.
