- Legendary explorer Thor Heyerdahl's epic 4,300-mile crossing of the Pacific on a balsawood raft in 1947, in an effort to prove that it was possible for South Americans to settle in Polynesia in pre-Columbian times.
- Twenty-seven year old Allison is an aspiring actress who acts likes a celebrity. Beyond the plethora of designer labels among her wardrobe, she considers the most expensive of beauty products necessities in the entertainment business. She can't hold a steady nine-to-five job as she would rather ditch work than miss an audition. Her boyfriend Jared provides her with gifts and pays for her every time they go out together. The only fall-back from acting that she has given herself is a stint at school, but that was always sidelined by trips she made so that she could be discovered. Others have facilitated her lifestyle because Allison is beautiful on the surface, and turns on the waterworks when her beauty doesn't get her what she wants. But approaching thirty with $130,000 of debt and no career to speak of, she is taking a scattered approach to possible alternatives to acting. And her beauty and youth will only last so long. Allison has to get realistic about getting a job to put a roof over her head while still having the flexibility to pursue her acting dream if she so chooses. Gail provides her with some experts in the fields that Allison has considered as possible careers so that she can fully explore what is required to succeed in those jobs, as well as some jobs that Allison may not have considered but would fulfill a role in bringing in some income. At the beginning of the process, Gail believes Allison may be her biggest challenge to date. A comment Allison makes at the first face-to-face meeting in response to the reason she is unable to file for bankruptcy sets the tone for the month.
