Amid the Coronavirus pandemic and lock-down, we are going Old School for our departmental productions, leaning into a tried and trusted form, the radio drama. This 12-part weekly series of short audio plays, written by ACC creative writing students and local professional playwrights, imagines the landmark at the center of Austin, Texas --the Congress Avenue Bridge -- as a backdrop for stories about and around the bridge, and the people crossing it.
- This coming-of-age, magical realist story shadows a teenager grasping for a sense of self while trapped in an abusive household.
- This documentary about an Austin based newspaper written by, distributed , produced, and sold by the homeless of Austin. This gives them a way to make money to get off the streets and be able to give them a creative voice to be heard on all kinds of topics. From living on the street, to writing, to taking stands on political issues that affect them personally. The stories are gritty and heart warming. This short was shown at a special showcase at the SXSW Film Festival. It is now in production again to make a longer version for the film festival circuit.
- Set in the future, an elderly woman responsible for demolishing the Congress Avenue Bridge fifty years earlier, tells a story steeped in magical reality, that helped her cope with what really happened that day.
