After the controversial Welsh coach Roy Francis quit at the start of the 1971 season, another English player-coach Merv Hicks took over. And with another Welsh giant prop Jim Mills, Norths had the biggest pack of forwards in the competition. But as gun halfback, Tim Pickup who joined in 1972 commented, we didn't win that many games but never lost a "blue" up front. The fortunes of the club changed when the legendary Noel Kelly took over as coach and an array of young talent joined Tim Pickup who became captain in 1973 and 1974, just missing out on the semi finals. The problem after that was half the top players, especially Pickup, took offers elsewhere.
