Following his heart and with good intentions, Yohan makes decisions that are misunderstood by local adults and sabotaged by other envious children. Unjustly accused, he is punished and beaten by Nome. Events only get worse, with wild animals attacking Nome's herd on Yohan's watch, while Yohan discovers that his friend Anna and her brother have been beaten at a neighboring farm. Using his resourcefulness and ingenuity, a battered Yohan sets out to help Anna and her brother escape from the farm owners.

It turns out that Valerie had made an urgent call to a lawyer in France and Poole suspects she was about to sue the clinic for botched surgery caused by Tipping's failing eye sight. But events take another turn when the clinic is exposed as giving criminals new identities - and faces.

An arrest is soon made but Poole suspects that June's murder may be linked to one in England some while earlier and solves the case by proving the connection.
