Distracted by a couple of down-on-their-luck mobsters, Rick is confronted in a dark alley by Lauren Jones, armed with a pistol, and wanting revenge. Rick knows he's been cornered, and faces his death, chiding himself that he couldn't have seen this coming. Rick is shot by Lauren. Lauren, successful in murdering the detective, leaves the scene quickly in search of a drink.
