- In a world with so many stories we, Nathalie el-Jorr, Anna Myung-Sook Kim and Karoline Schwikal, betook ourselves to a country, nestled between the improbable borders of Syria and Israel, to show the lives of young people caught up by the tide of its development. Lebanon. In view of our final project we decided on a creative cinematic piece of work, that ought to be challenging and influential at the same time. As for Nathalie it meant going back home as much as a critical examination of the past and predominantly present media coverage of her homeland. We all know how the press manipulates the course of life events through selective and exaggerated reporting of facts. As director of rewind & replay she is taking the opportunity to reveal something that people forgot and that the media has turned a blind eye to. Foreign and neighbouring countries fought their wars and still do in Lebanon, thereby imposing the wrong image upon a country that once was called 'the Paris of the East' and the cradle of democracy in the region. Lebanon has always been invaded, but has never invaded any of its neighbours. The country 4000 kilometers eastward has paid a huge price because of Middle Eastern conflicts. Innocent, but not left to be a bystander. Rewind & Replay was done in four extensive months. We realised the project was large for only three, but the team was a perfect combination. We are three young and passionate media production students. Our documentary deals with a very shocking, sad, ironic, and crude subject. Nothing is to be left unsaid, we will not be silent. The starting point for this film was a series of discriminating attitudes towards Lebanon, the small country located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, that we came across in Germany. Determinded to show the bigger picture, and not only the one media is trying to convey all the time, we set off in search of a sign that would crystallise the contradictions between the good and the bad. We found just what we were looking for while moving through Beirut, Lebanons buzzing capital, and its surroundings. Through Rewind & Replay we allow the people to see non-biased facts and insights, and to form a clearer idea about this small multireligious country. Background information is provided in the form of interviews with young Lebanese of different backgrounds, religions and occupations. The deeper we went the more emotional were the responses from our interviewees who told their stories and expressed their hopes. Our days were filled with new ventures, determination continuous probing for whats beneath the surface. Rewind & Replay conveys an abundance of unforgettable impressions that accumulated during our stay, and forebodes vibes and reflections from an inevitably damaged, yet blessed Lebanese life. As a work intended for serious thinking, Rewind & Replay was constructed, quite intentionally, to capture unique and genuine moments, and to remain true to the people we are trying to portray and still get the footage we are looking for to help the story move along. Footage that the press has barely touched on before, soliciting instead stories that sell. And blood, contrariety, and anger sell. [Karoline Schwikal]
