- Unfounded suspicions lead a married couple to begin divorce proceedings.
- After her husband is reported lost at sea, Beth Wylie supports herself and her little daughter with the proceeds of a small interior decorating shop. Beth falls in love with Tom Benham, an insurance agent, and gives his bored mother a job as her assistant. Attempting to sell insurance to gruff Commodore Gordon, Beth's uncle, Tom announces his intention to marry her. The commodore disapproves and sets out to ruin Beth's business. Beth's husband turns out to be alive, engaged in smuggling Chinese into California on a schooner. Wylie kidnaps his wife and sets sail, but the commodore and Tom give chase in a tug. In a thrilling battle, Wylie is killed and Beth is rescued. Tom sells the commodore life insurance and obtains his blessing for a marriage to Beth.
- Wanting to attain wealth and social status, young Herbert Thompson marries Ann Morton, who comes from a rich, prominent family, throwing over pretty Angelina Kilboure, who really loves him. Years later Herbert has become the local District Attorney and has two children, Bert and Virginia. One night Bert, a patron at a seedy roadhouse, defends his sister's honor from a ruffian and winds up killing the man. Angelina persuades Herbert to leave his post as D.A. to defend his son in his murder trial. Herbert wins the case, but there are unexpected consequences.
- Although Billie Farrington's aunt, Mrs. Farrington, wishes her to marry Farrington ranch foreman Bob Hanford, Billie refuses to be interested in anyone but Count Venino, a fake nobleman. Mrs. Farrington becomes seriously ill, and Billie weds Bob to please her aunt but treats him with chilly reserve. When Mrs. Farrington learns of Venino's masquerade and his half-caste birth, she gives a reception to which she invites Venino's Burmese mother. Billie runs away, is kidnapped by Venino, and then is rescued by Bob, whose rugged honesty Billie finally appreciates.
- Cassie, an orphan who sings angelically in a small-town church, marries the organist, L. I. B. Bell, when he promises to obtain singing lessons for her. They go to San Francisco, where Cassie leaves Bell within the hour when she discovers his low nature. Answering an advertisement in the paper, Cassie gets a job singing in a mining town dance-hall. There she charms everyone with her voice, including Madoc Bill, who, having just won a large sum of money at faro, writes her a check for $10,000 and sends her abroad to study voice. Cassie soon becomes a successful diva, singing in the Grand Opera at Moscow, while Madoc Bill serves 4 years in jail for murder. During Madoc's incarceration, his partner, Chuckwalla Bill, strikes it rich. When Madoc is released from jail, he and Chuckwalla build a house for Cassie, who has just returned to the United States after a triumphant continental tour. Her husband, Bell, suffering from consumption, comes to the mining town, and Cassie nurses him back to health. When Bell learns of Cassie's devotion to Madoc Bill, he attempts to kill him and is himself killed. Cassie marries Madoc, and they settle down in the house he built for her.
- After discovering that her lover is already married, a young woman gets engaged to another man. However, her attempts to recover embarrassing love letters from her former lover lead to her being accused of murder when he is found dead.
