- Raven, Eagle, Wina and Qos are out fishing when they become ensnared by a storm and blown far out to sea , finally coming to rest on a strange island.
- In the time before the light and life came to the land, the world was dark and unformed. Raven, who lived during this time of creation, was bored and complained constantly to his brother Eagle, who tried his best to ignore him.
- Igis and Qos are trying to have a child without success. Frog comes upon Igis crying in the forest, and she tells her of the witch-creature Dzunukwa, a powerful magician who may be able to help her; for a price.
- The world is now filled with life: birds clamor merrily and fish swim and jump in the waters. Raven and Eagle walk among the new animals, instructing them on how they should behave but the animals ignore them or make rude gestures.
- Gwai is having a hard time keeping up with the others when it comes to gathering and hunting food. His wife is afraid that they will end up with less than everybody else, which would be an embarrassment.

- The first people build Eagle a totem because Eagle brings more food, in the form of fish he catches.
- Qos is in love with Igis, but she'll have nothing to do with him. He becomes more and more despondent as he is the only man without a mate or children and winter is upon them, but Igis is simply too much in love with herself to love anybody else.
- The children are fishing when a great wind takes them to a beach far from home. They see some huge footprints, and afraid, they hide in the bushes.
- Frog's old friend Mother Toad comes to visit, and, as the two story- tellers swap tales, Raven overhears the story of another trickster, Coyote, who lives near Mother Toad's home far to the south. Determined to prove that he is the greatest of all tricksters, Raven heads down to meet Coyote and trick him by teaching him to fly. But Coyote is a trickster too, and Raven soon learns that all is not as it seems.
- The critters complain to the Great Spirit about getting sick.
- The children of the First People are visited by the tiny Mouse Woman, who speaks in a voice that only they can understand. She warns them that a great flood is coming and that the children need to find a way to convince their parents to flee their village to the safety of the mountain. But as the days pass and the children become more concerned, their parents remain unconvinced of the danger and refuse to go. Until Klundux gets an idea.
- Winadzi is having nightmares. He doesn't want to sleep at night and Abas is worried. She asks Raven for advice and Raven tells her she will find help in the most unlikely place.
- The children sit outside looking up at the stars with Dog. They wonder aloud how they came to take the shapes that they have.
- The First People return to their village to find it devastated by the great flood. At first, they are overwhelmed by the work that needs to be done to rebuild their homes and food stores, but Frog suggests that they look to their friends for help. Sure enough, the Kulos, Sea Wolf, and Dzunakwa join the animals to help the people rebuild the village before winter comes. When the work is done, the creatures go to leave, but the people have another idea.
- On a hunt with the men and boys, Dza gets separated. Evening begins to fall. As she walks along the beach she sees a man gathering clams and shells.
- Raven seeks a respite in the forest, but soon finds himself in the midst of a dispute over a giant salmon.
- Raven is sent by the Great Spirit to free the musicians of the sun.
- A killer whale deters the villagers from fishing.
- Some of the boys of the First People are making fun of Dza because she is a girl. When she shows them that she can compete, even beating her brother Winadzi at wrestling, they call her names. Walking alone by herself in the forest, she comes upon the mysterious Frog, who tells her the story of Rough Face, a young girl who showed the people of her village that true beauty lies within. Dza is soon lost in Frog's storytelling, and the characters she imagines in her mind look quite familiar.
