He does not know yet Vera, future wife of his son Mirek, and has decided to secretly check her behaviour in the absence of her fiancée. By mistake he considers Vera Novotná to be his son's girlfriend, and so his investigations cause him plenty of embarrassments.

One day, he decides to leave the capital and flee from the woman he loves, Natasha, a rising singing star. Andrei takes refuge in Siberia, his native land. Once there, he gets a job in a sawmill, where he entertains his fellow-workers playing the accordion during leisure hours. Some time later, Natasha and her company are expected in America where they are to do a tour. But an airplane breakdown forces the pilot to land next to the village in which Andrei lives and works...
- Ladislava Zápotocký is exiled to Zákolany where he works as a tailor. He organizes a local workers' association that, despite prosecution, manages to win election in 1897 for the social democratic party in the voting district.

- A 17 year old boy with a literary bent is smitten with a local beauty in her twenties. Does it matter to him whether she returns his admiration?
- The engine-driver Matys rescues his locomotive, which he affectionately calls Lisa, from the Second World War dive-bombers. He himself, however, is wounded during the attacks. Recovering at home, he looks forward to the end of the war so as to be able to ride his repaired locomotive again. The war finally comes to an end. Matys's son-in-law Vojta is an engine-driver, too. On the day his son is born, Vojta gets drunk and forgets about his duty. He is called for, but cannot be found. The colleagues persuade old Matys to secretly substitute for Vojta.
