American Mobster: Retribution (2021)
Don't bother, if you like gangster movies. This is one to avoid.
With scripts, scenes and dialogue ripped and twisted from all the gangster movies and series The Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino, The Sopranos we find the protagonist performing various impersonations throughout. Poor acting and a bad plot add to the problems. Most of the budget was blown on the detail and decorations for the Nick's birthday party at the beginning leaving just enough for a drone and then it's downhill from thereon, it feels as if every scene was shot in a single take resulting in glaring mistakes.
Legionnaire's Trail (2020)
If making an Historical Drama try researching history.
From the opening scene when Rourke mispronounced Caligula "Caliglia " I knew this wasn't for me. I abandoned it after 15 minutes. Sad to see Micky Rourke slide further down the Hollywood alphabetical listings.
Target Number One (2020)
Well researched, surprisingly accurate for a relatively low budget Canadian movie.
Well worth a watch! A credible account that was well depicted.
I can't speak for 80's Canada but it got 80's Thailand spot on. DEA and British customs were very active in Thailand at that time. They pressured the Thai police which,in turn, vigorously targeted foreigners, escalating the severity of relatively minor drug offences, and if they didn't have the funds to buy their way out of trouble, in they went. To divert attention from the real ( protected) players, to satisfy visable Thai compliance, to deter chancers and newcomers but predominantly to bolster publicity for Reagan and Bush's, well funded and highly lucrative "just say no! " "war on drugs."
There from 84 to 92. The film brought back a lot of memories, not least those shackles that Justin Jackson mentions in his review. I'd forgotten the peeling blue/green paint that was everywhere. The prison population seemed authentic apart from a lack locked up foreigners (among other nationalities lots of Nigerian mules were convicted around that time) the film depicts the situation and era very well.
Harriet (2019)
Terrible biopic of a significant HISTORICAL figure.
Never let facts get in the way of a good story appears to be the raison d'etre here.
Very disappointing! Shames the legacy of Harriet Tubman. A waste of a compelling story that could have been a great artwork.
Whilst I understand and appreciate the recent drive for Hollywood to have more black protagonists and heroes, they have got the message very wrong here. Harriet Tubman WAS a black hero. Her real, true story, is as interesting and important as it is heroic. This film's need to embellish the bare bones of her story, and history, with absolute fiction and historical inaccuracy belittled Tubman's real accomplishments by portraying her as a nineteenth century black female Rambo, with elements of Martin Luther King, Mystic Meg and laughably (at one point) appropriated imagery of Che Guevara, this IMO is detrimental to both Harriet Tubman's legacy and history. It worries me that viewers will believe this is historically accurate because it has attachments to a real life character. Need to know the story? Read a book, watch a documentary or if you want to watch a film portrayal of her life "A Woman Called Moses" from the 70's is a better choice. if you insist on watching "Harriet" please view it largely as a work of fiction.
Trumping Democracy (2017)
A must watch documentary, Cambrige Analytica exposed months before mainstream news.
I watched this last year, have returned to review it in light of the "Breaking news" about Facebook and Cambridge Analytica. I was shocked by how few views and reviews on IMDB, It would seem that a low percentage of reviews and ratings are from thinking people. The rest must be Cambridge Analytica employees or Americans that can't admit how they were duped. Big business and computer algorithms controlling Governments, Media and the public's every thought. There is a good review of this film and it's implications (with spoilers) on Huffington post. WATCH THIS FILM IF YOU VALUE FREEDOM, FREE WILL AND PRIVACY. It also helps explain the Brexit referendum outcome. I must end here, lots to do. I have to register for a VPN, delete my online presence and buy tin foil to put in my hat.
