Poor Things (2023)
Unexpected
This is certainly not for the squeamish. It was an adventure into absurdity. There were moments that made my jaw drop in total shock and moments where something unexpected caused a laugh to just pop out at the insanity of it all. There were just as many times that it made me incredibly uncomfortable. It is sad, funny, twisted, shocking and as the title of this review, unexpected. I can't imagine that this film will appeal to the mainstream, but the acting is phenomenal, the cinematography is spectacular and the set design is whimsical. The movie begins as if it were an old black and white Frankenstein film, but with Bella's "Awakening" her world becomes very colorful and - unexpected.
Spaceman (2024)
Castaway in space where Wilson is a spider
About three quarters of the way through this, it dawned on me why it was so familiar. It is literally the movie Castaway in space instead of on a beach. Oh, and rather than a beach ball, Wilson is a giant hairy spider who says "Skinny human" way too many times. We started counting how many times he said it about half way in. There was even a scene where he had to leave the safety of the ship to retrieve the spider just like Tom Hanks did with the raft and Wilson. I love Adam Sandler's movies. I think this actually had potential as a comedy. It was dark and morose and just weird. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't.
The Crowded Room (2023)
Wait a while before reviewing
This is not a riveting film packed with action from the get go. It is a slow burn. I thought it was ok until I hit later episodes. Now, I think it is fantastic. I honestly can't wait to go back and rewatch the earlier episodes knowing what I know now. I'm sure I will have a very different take on it. The acting is top notch - from everyone. I can't find a weak link. There are scenes that aren't for everyone, but they are certainly convincing. It's not always easy to watch, but mental illness rarely is. The further into it you go, the better and more disturbing it becomes. Kudos to the entire cast and crew.
Harry & Meghan (2022)
Not everyone is meant for that life
I am going to buck the trend here. I saw this as more of a love story that the Earth shattering "Expose" as I keep seeing it referred to. I didn't see anything new. I just saw two people who are very much in love and not meant for that life. Who among us would be though? I don't think you can blame Megan. Harry showed signs from a young age that he may be more of a free spirit and not meant for that lifestyle. I don't get all of the hate for these folks. No one experienced what they did and I'd hazard to guess that none of you were there to witness what was happening so how can you judge their experience?
Spirited (2022)
Not what expected - but better!
I'm honestly not sure what I expected, but it wasn't this. It took me a little bit to get into it as I thought it was just going to be another so-so remake of the overdone "Christmas Carol." When I learned that it was a semi-musical, I was slightly less enthused as I am not a big fan of musicals. In the end, it was just what I needed. It might be just what a lot of people need. It was funny, witty, charming and uplifting with just a touch of adult humor here and there. It is also something that has a relevant message for kids and teens. There were certainly some plot twists that set it apart from the normal run of the mill remake. In the end, it was a great watch. In fact, I might even watch it again.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Beautiful Build up
I kind of fiddled around on my phone through season one. I paid a little more attention in season two. By season 6, I was foregoing sleep and feeling like part of their family. It was so bad that I could hear my own thoughts in Moira's voice. I loved everything about it....the growth, the genuine wit, and the incredible acting that made it the most believable series that I have ever watched. I will probably watch it again. All of it.
My Spy (2020)
Fun for all ages
Is it an Oscar worthy cinematic masterpiece? Is the acting top notch? Probably not, but I watched with my son who is 16. We both laughed a lot. It was funny, touching and just an entertaining watch! I am not hypercritical. If we can watch something that we both enjoy and feel pretty good watching it, it's a hot in my book. I don't understand all the low ratings.
Wrinkles the Clown (2019)
Scary - but not in a cinematic way
This is the worst possible film making combined with random children who are difficult to understand and seem to have zero relevance to anything. I hate giving bad reviews, but this was a huge disappointment.
The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
Refreshing
This film was refreshingly both witty and touching. It wasn't anything that slaps you in the face but more of a slow burn with lots of underlying elements. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Good Boys (2019)
The Wonder Years .... with adult toys
The only real way to describe this is that it is essentially "The Wonder Years" with four letter words and sex toys.
Long Shot (2019)
Requires a Sense of Humor
If you have a sense of humor, aren't offended by everything and can stomach a few F bombs, it's a really good movie. I actually laughed out loud a few times at the end. If you are easily offended, this probably isn't for you, and that's ok. There are plenty of movies out there that you will enjoy. This one is for the other people.
Good Girls (2018)
So Good
This show is amazing. It can take your emotions and attachments to characters and turn them inside out, upside down and sideways and that is just in the first half of the show. Very addicting.
Ripley's Believe It or Not! (2019)
I Believe!
I love the reboot! Bruce Campbell is a phenomenal host and the cast of characters, the flavor of the show and the feel of the whole thing is classic Ripley's. So glad it's back!
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Wow
I am an upper middle aged woman who has no business watching superhero movies. My son dragged me into these and I am so glad he did. It was funny, sad, action packed and moving in so many ways. I will watch it again. And then, maybe again.
