The Good Place (2016)
What happened?
Loved Season 1 and 2.
Season 3 changed all the characters and dumped them in a boring place. It is like watching a low budget sit-com. It has none of the interest and charm of the previous seasons.
I assume they changed writers or existing writers didn't get the deal they wanted and they just churned out some scripts to meet legal obligations.
Maniac (2018)
The Emperor has no clothes
A series of dull mini-stories where in every episode Emma Stone plays a different character. These are glued together with a weak bit of mildly interesting sci-fi. In some episodes the interesting bit consists of the last 15 seconds.
It is sometimes visually unusual but overall extremely boring.
It reminded me of watching "Birdman" and wondering why so many people thought it was the best thing ever. Only for it to be forgotten shortly afterwards. The Emperor is wearing no clothes people!
Given the gushing praise this is getting I suspect we are all dreaming while strapped into a chair with eletrodes on our heads. I got given a different pill to everyone else ....
SS-GB (2017)
Dull. Boring. Wasted opportunity.
Extremely dull. The concept is interesting but they should not have used such a bland source. This would have been so much better if they had commissioned an original script.
Amazon's "The Man in The High Castle" worked much better but that was only because they didn't tie themselves to the book it was based on.
At least I know what drying paint looks like under the Third Reich.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Souless, boring, pretentious rubbish
The title of this film should have been "Birdman: Or (Like Watching Paint Dry) (2014)".
I'm not sure I've ever seen a film that delivered nothing of the promise of the trailer. The whole film was painful to watch. I'm puzzled as to what people see in it or how anyone could describe it as having a "strong plot". Absolutely nothing happens.
It appears that any criticism of this film is met with :
- You are too stupid to appreciate it - You need to watch it again to spot the story - You should stick to "Transformers" because you aren't capable of intelligent thought - You can only watch a film at face value - You need to be a super-smart hipster with a beard to get the plot
None of which applies to me.
It emphasises my conclusion that this is an Emperor's New Clothes event where lots of people have convinced themselves this film is amazing because it is trendy to do so. They are seeing redeeming features that aren't there because they want to pretend they are smarter than everyone else. In time they will realise and pretend they hated it all along.
The film's budget was $16M. Someone, somewhere must be sitting on $15M because there is no sign of it in this film. I really hope the fad will pass because any sort of film is better than more of this mind- numbing, tedious, hipster, lovee junk.
I am so glad I didn't get a chance to watch this at the cinema as at least all I lost was 2 hours of my life.
