Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Refreshing view from a human standpoint
This is something else. Not just a story of humongous monster that feels at home in the sea and on land. This is a human story, friendship, failure bend into succes. From me it succeeded in drawing tears, for the human aspect, feelings of loss and failing to accomplish anything. But also the resolve in the greatest danger, finding your place. A great example of how to move reluctant men to do what must be done, without pressure, but from morality, the right thing to do. Values we see too few in films nowadays. Here duty is mixed with friendship, acknowledging men's real mastery of crafts or science. Clearly presented: we need thinkers and doers. And maybe even a hero, the individual that makes the difference. I really loved this version, so much even that I'm going to see it again.
Hotel Sinestra (2022)
Enjoy to watch
The story is not as straightforward as in most films for this age group. You're kept puzzling till the end. The music (classical mostly) fits very well the grandeur of the Swiss landscape. The two lead role players did a good job, the boy was really enjoying his life (not). The story beneath it comes to the surface a few times, but is a challenge to figure out for yourself. There' a good balance of a bit frightening action and relieve. Nothing that's not fitted for children. The cinematography is really good, the placement of the hotel in the heart of the majestic mountains is a good depiction of its isolation. Which places this story in believable surroundings. All in all. I enjoyed this movie, I'm 68.
The Son (2022)
Nothing is a real depiction of tghe real world
Having first hand experience with schizophrenia and bipolar I was curious how they would handle depression. They failed at every attempt.
The father gets never an answer and still believes till the end that his son has no serious condition. Utter denial. That was the part that hurt me the most, I got the full support from home, I could stay in the hospital/ward for as long as they, the doctors, deemed good. Here the doctors could not get the message clear enough on the table for the parents. The parents were played into every corner by the son and every time they bought into the meaningless words.
It was very hard to watch, I fully agree with primal_1 above. I too had to laugh sometimes where I was certain, that it wasn't meant to be funny.
What was more, it is depicted as if wanting the boy back home, is love. It isn't, they fail to see that real love is letting the son get the treatment he needs.
Denying that need isn't love at all. This movie shows more the struggle of the parent themselves, the trouble they get into, when they deny that the son really needs serious treatment.
The parents play a very detrimental part, and that's shown as sensitive, caring, loving. This movie misses the mark on all points. I still gave it 6 stars, because the acting was very good, so, for someone who knows nothing about mental afflictions, this movie is very watchable.
Horizon Line (2020)
Avoid at any cost, even if tickets are free
There's one positive point worth mentioning: the camerawork.
It ridiculous proceedings and stupidities can be tallied up every minute. I didn't feel a bit sorry if the two main characters would survive or not. The seemed to be hunting for the Darwin trophy. I have always free tickets, but the two hours wasted are a loss forever. Even 'The Mountain Between Us' was that much better, and that didn't get rave reviews.
So this, if you do go, expect nothing and do the quiz: how many dumb things can you find? Make notes of it, you can not remember them all.
Relic (2020)
Horror of a different kind
I went to see this thinking it was horror in the traditions way. It just isn't. It's a story full of symbolism. Three generations together, pondering on the same problem: the degrading consequences of loosing control in every aspect. Which make the youngest so confused, she looses her way. The real horror is that Alzheimer is a family thing, to grasp barely that the person that once was loved isn't there anymore. What provokes hefty emotions, this horror is played out, and that takes the time as these processes are slow, in the beginning, but go faster toward the end. The pace of the movie echoes that tempo. I felt cheated at first, no traditional horror. But I was rewarded afterwards having seen a different kind of horror, that many of us experience or will be experiencing.
Demain tout commence (2016)
A totally unexpected Omar Sy
I though I knew Omar Sy from his other work: "Intouchables", "Nos jours heureux", "Chocolat". But this is something else! Excellent performance! He's so into his character that it feels he isn't even acting, just being. The plot twist towards the end is a real surprise. You go on guessing the story line, but it goes to and fro a few times. Along the way, you're really rooting for more than one person! It's a tale of "deserving" versus " rights", feelings versus facts. Clémence Poésy did her part very well too and so did Antoine Bertrand, madly in love with his work, thinking very fast. The tempo and timing looked good, I did not feel its length of nearly 2 hours. All in all, a good movie, certainly worth watching, for men and women alike.
