Ender's Game (2013)
7/10
The book, the movie and a video game
12 November 2013
When I watched the Ender's Game trailer for the 1st time browsing the IMDb and I though: Here's a Sci Fi movie that I will probably see. My life went on and a few months later I saw the trailer again mentioned in a space video game called Skyjacker (Skyjacker - Starship Constructor update 20 in August). I got curious enough and decided to read the book first and watch the movie in November. Then I discover that there wasn't only one book, but a bunch of them. The Ender's Game saga!

I'm a bit lazy when it comes to reading, so I decided to listen to the audio books instead :) I got lucky, since from the author's point of view this is the ideal medium for enjoying the story. The author also had some concerns about making a movie since:

1- In the book the narrator is inside the character head. Making a movie with 3rd person speaking the thought of another one all the time would not work very well for the viewer.

2- The kids must be very young about 6 to 12 years old and it's very hard to find outstanding actor at that age that can give the required dramatic performance.

3- There should not be a love story and Hollywood tends to take advantage of the teenager feelings to do that…

I was skeptical about the movie and unfortunately I was right. However they were able to do somethings right:

  • Amazing special effects;

  • Amazing final battle;

  • Cut the Locke and Demosthenes characters from the movie, since it was impossible to develop them in a 2 hours movie, along side the main story;

  • Give a plausible explanation about the bugger motive to attack Earth;

  • Create some doubt about the bugger intentions.

What's wrong with the movie then?

  • Almost everything happens too fast in the Battle School;

-- The training should take years, not days…

-- Ender's ascension to power is not credible. He fought too few battles to be promoted to commander…

  • Bonzo supposed to be BIG!

  • Bean supposed to be tiny…

They should have taken special attention to the cast. If the Bonzo character supposed to be funny, I assure you that none of the Ender's Game books fan laugh when saw him!

The movie should have been split into two parts, in order to develop the Ender Wiggin personality and make is ascension on the Battle School credible. Also since they had Bean from the beginning why not develop him too? With a 2 parts movie everybody would have won. The producer would sell 2 movies for the price of producing 1. After the 1st movie the book would sell as hell and people would still be interested to see the 2nd part of the movie.

Last, but not least, I must say that Human fleet looks good, although compared to the Skyjacker video game fleet it just feels short…

Taking all into account I gave this movie a generous 7, when it had the potential to be a 9 or 10, if the had done it right!

Good plot but you cannot take it seriously...
22 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the movie last night and I've to say that the plot was great. Its a mix of "The Game" and a bit of "Total Recall". So I must congratulate the writer for that.

From my point of view, the big problem with this movie is just that from the beginning you will not believe that the story is real, because the actors chosen to be the FBI are just to young. An the escape for the police detention facility is just TOO EASY.

The performance of the main character is awesome but the support actors not that great. The girlfriend is just unbelievable, she does show any emotion at all...

So to sum it up, congratulations Tom Getty. Don't get me wrong, I like your performance like I said, but the movie needs a remake with another actors to meet it's full potential.

Watchmen (2009)

This is not a Spider Men movie, don't bring your kids to watch it!
8 March 2009
Yesterday I went to see Watchman, and my expectations were not so good. I was expecting an action movie and I did't get exactly that.

In Portugal, this movie is for 16 years old people and not for at least 18 years old. I don't know what is the standard in Portugal for a 18 years old movie. Maybe its just for porno... Some of the scenes are "quite red". So definitely there will be blood! There are also 2 or 3 scenes with nudity... What amazed me was that children with less then 10 years old were in the room!

So please that the rating seriously, this is not a movie for kids!

The movie is quite complex sometimes, so although its two and a half hour movie, it might require you to watch it a second time to fully understand every detail of it.

Saw III (2006)

I only tell you what you should expect!
31 December 2006
Yesterday I decided to see my first "Saw movie" in the cinema. I had already seen Saw 1 and 2, and I decided that it was time to see one of then as soon as I came out.

This movie is the first one I saw that was rated for 18 years old. In Portugal that is rare for non porn movie. This movie is for +18, not because it has sex scenes, but for the amount of blood and torture in it! In the theatre there were only about 30 people, and less then a half of then didn't have 18 years old... As long as you know what to expect, not sex but blood, you will be OK.

So let me tell you what you should expect: - Overall not as good as the first one - Better than Saw 2 - An ending as good as the first one - Another one...

Now you might ask your self, is this review any good? I would tell you, YES, not because I wrote it, but because I only tell you what you should expect. If you believe me, go and see this movie. If you never saw "Saw 1 and Saw 2", see them first and only see this one if you liked any of the two.

To sum up, the movie sucks!
30 July 2005
I saw the trailer at the cinema and thought: Finally a trailer that doesn't show the best part of the movie!

However after seeing the movie I must say, that the marketing really people did their best at the trailer. They simply didn't have anything amazing to show!

To sum up, the movie sucks! If you liked "The Day After Tomorrow" and/or "Signs", you might like this one, otherwise just skip it. I know it has Tom Cruise and was directed by Steven Spielberg, but don't let it fool you, I isn't not a bit as good as Minority Report.

Save your money!

Will I like this movie?
20 February 2005
Normally I watch 1 or 2 movies in the weekend, but most of them are crap!

I think that most of the movie lovers feel or might start to feel that watching a good movie it's just like winning the lottery. So I would like to offer you the right ticket.

Without spoiling anything I just like to say/write that I'm sure that you will be pleased with this movie if you liked "Equilibrium" or "Paychek". What about the people that haven't seen any of the movies above? They just have to see one. If you like it, see the other two, otherwise skip them!

Last advice: Don't haste you time on Hollywood crap, just because some movie own Oscars!
