The Lobster (2015)
Pretentious dreamy rubbish.
I feel I wasted 2 hrs of my life & it will never be returned. I am amazed at how a few big names were convinced to be a part of this. Some of the script is witty & could be well delivered but instead, the delivery of what is being said falls mostly flat. It's a good premise but just such disappointing nonsense. The monologue that runs throughout is also just distracting & I'm not sure what purpose it serves, it was pointless drivel. I didn't really understand why the characters were the way they were. They are all so totally unlikeable that I felt no interest in their outcome. It has subconsciously been added to a short list in my memory of movies that I consider 'amongst the worst'.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Wasted talent. Abysmal writing. Just awful!
What on Earth is going on with this movie?! It is awful! I'm halfway through & I'm already struggling to stick with it. Too many jokes that are badly timed, irrelevant & pointless. So far it just seems to be one silly mess. Bale is wasted in this bile. The writers must've been on a strike. I can't believe they all looked at this script & thought this was a good idea. For once, possibly the first time, I find myself agreeing with the critics. And thank God I didn't pay to see this at a cinema. Hemsworth is flat & unimpressive despite the muscled build, decorated with bar room tramp tattoos. Crowe as Zeus is a fat man. A gimmicky circus sketch who speaks with a nasally Russian accent. Zeus, is a Greek God! Not a Russian tyrant! Portman's character is just boring. I think if I'd been in the cinema, I'd have walked out & tried to ask for my money back. It is up there among the worst films I've seen. The only thing I liked was seeing Mjolnir with a different power & even that hammer acted better than most of the people in the film.
Airplane! (1980)
About as good as it gets.
I don't know why this only shows a review of 7.7. I'd give this an 8, at least. Possibly a 9. This movie has more jokes & gags every 2 minutes than most comedies have in their entire feature. There's a joke every few seconds. It's brilliant. Hilarious. Witty & sometimes just visually ridiculous. The casting is wonderful especially from the spot-on Leslie Neilson. This was made in 1980, & here I am watching this 42 years later & it's still as good now as it was then.
Birth of the Dragon (2016)
Halfway through but already disappointed
I'm halfway through this. It's on tv so I'm thinking, why not. My impression though at this mid-point is not so buoyant. It's a shame that someone like Bruce Lee isn't still alive, in part because it's difficult sometimes to know how accurate a portrayal of someone is. Not just for Lee, but for other people in other film biopics. In this, he is brought across as a mouthy trash-talking punk. Lots of skill, little substance & no class. I find this hard to believe & the movie comes across as a venture into something false just for the sake of trying a new approach.
Ghostbusters (2016)
Terrible. Awful. An insult to the original.
This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. For a remake movie, it is definitely one of the worst I have ever had the displeasure of watching & it is an insult to the many times better original. I did not laugh once, & I like to laugh. I enjoy comedies. This is not a comedy. It is a cinema tragedy. It is aggressively feminist & for example, the part of the secretary played by Hemsworth shows the supporting male lead as a painfully thick & moronic dumb-wit with no charm or intelligence. This is compared to the 1984 original where the secretary part is played as a female by Annie Potts. Her portrayal was smart & sharp, feisty & assertive compared to the remakes male thicko. This should never have been remade. This is purely an attempt for the studio to reassign lovable & original characters to a female & modern audience instead of using the same energy to develop fresh strong characters within a newly written role.
Attack the Block (2011)
One of my most hated films ever
This is one of the most unlikable films I have ever seen. I literally hate it. I think the plot always had potential & in a way, I kind of like the Aliens too, their design & appearance. What ruined it for me beyond any hope of tolerance was the characters that made up the story. The teenage gang in this movie are the biggest pile of w*****s, basically bullies & thieves, scumbags, & I'm supposed to root for them because they're the main roles? Not a chance. I wanted the aliens to win, & for the gang members to die in varying violent ways. I turned this off about half way through in agreement with two other friends that were watching this with me. This is one of my most detested films, ever.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Beautiful, in every way.
I'm 37 & I first saw this only a few yrs ago & I have seen it a number of times since. Initially I gave this 9 stars. I've changed it to 10 simply because I can not think of a way it could be better. Do not let the French language or subtitles put you off. I think in fact, as an English viewer, I found it enhanced the dreamlike quality of this romantic comedy. The main protagonist, Amelie is wonderful to watch & undeniably likeable. The cinematography is beautiful, the music charming & the plot is the epitome of feel good fantasy. Everyone else cast in this is well chosen & the result is a beautiful & unforgettable delight of a film. One of my absolute favourites.
Rampage (2018)
A bit crap.
5 stars out of 10. I think I was being a little generous too. The Rock I feel, has been typecast now & that theme continues here. A movie written it seems to accommodate his physical presence & image as a large & hard actor. I find this boring & I'd rather see him being challenged. The plot too was weak & unimaginative. When the giant wolf in the movie was revealed to be capable of flight in the same manner you'd expect from a flying squirrel, then I might've left the cinema if it wasn't for the film being close to finishing. I don't remember any of the music nor any quotes but I can appreciate that some of the effects with the creatures, their scale was pretty cool. Otherwise, wasted time for me.
