Local Hero (1983)
Entirely mediocre
The film never got started and went nowhere. You may think I did not like the movie because it lacked the usual action, sex and violence. The point is the film was entirely mediocre. Maybe it's me. For those who liked it, my wife thought it was very good.
Best in Show (2000)
A good many chuckles
`Best In Show' is a comical look at the world of dog show competition. Any one familiar with the world of dog owners and dog show partictants will recognize the accuracy of this film. The film takes a fairly accurate and humorous view of this venue. There are a good many chuckles to be had in this production.
The direction and casting was excellent. The actors really captured the various personality types that one finds at dog shows.
A truly entertaining film for fans or non-fans of dog shows.
Shaft in Africa (1973)
Shaft a third rate movie
This is definitely a third rate movie. According to some reviewers, this is the best of the Shaft films so far. If that was the best of Shaft, I sure would not waste my time with another Shaft film..
Richard Roundtree does a fair job of acting, but the rest of the cast do not show much talent.
Something's Gotta Give (2003)
Funnier then about Schmidt
`Something's Got To Give' is excellent romantic comedy with good casting and direction. Jack Nicholson plays Harry Sanborn a 63-year-old bachelor who has been dating younger women all his life to avoid commitment. Jack Nicholson being Jack basically plays all his comic roles with great similarity. If you saw him in `All about Schmidt' it's the same character cleaned up and a bit and richer. Despite this, he is even funnier this time. Dianne Keaton plays Erica Barry the women who changes his life forever and the mother of his most recent young attraction Marin played by Amanda Peet.
At the beginning of the film when Harry has a heart attack and ends up in the hospital, the humour and comical situations begin and continue to the end.
The film portrays the serious and the comical aspects of the romance between Harry and Erica.
This film is definitely worth the time and the money.
Stanley & Iris (1990)
Love Conquers All
`Stanley and Iris' is a heart warming film about two people who find each other and help one another overcome their problems in life. Stanley's life is difficult, because he never learned to read or write. Iris is a widower with two teenage children working in a bakery where she meets Stanley. She decides to teach Stanley how to read at her home in her spare time. Over time they become romantically involved. After Stanley learns to read, he goes off to a good job in Chicago, only to return to Iris and ask her to marry him.
It's a really good film without nudity, violence, or profanity, that which is rare in today's films. A good film all round.
The Christmas Shoes (2002)
Rated 8 tears
`The Christmas Shoes' has to be one of the saddest films ever made for a Christmas movie. It should be rated 8 tears instead of 8 stars. The cast were all-good, but Max Morrow tore your heart out as the little boy who is losing his Mom.
Warning do not view this film if you are in a downer mood
Dead Calm (1989)
Extremely suspenseful
This film is a very good suspense thriller with excellent casting. Nicole Kidman plays Ray Ingram who is a women who just lost her child in a car accident, and is on a a yacht with her husband John, played by Sam Neil. Billy Zane plays the psychotic mass murderer. There were a few flaws such as some scenes of Sam Neil below deck of the sinking boat trying to survive. A little far fetched.
The film was excellent except for the ending. It should have ended when Ray and John cut the rescue dingy lose. The way Billy Zane's character reappears at the ending was phoney and not plausibly.
Love Actually (2003)
A truly entertaining film
Although this type of film never wins any awards, it was the best picture of the year 2003 for me. The casting was excellent as well as the directing. All of the actors where superb, and it has a great music track.
The film dealt with the many aspects of love involving eight different plots. There was humour, infidelity, adolescent love, passion and a whole range of emotions dealing with love.
If you are a romantic and want to see an uplifting and entertaining film this is it. The last scene proves that loves is all around us.
Crazy Moon (1987)
A Sensitive Love Story
Crazy Moon is a love story about an introverted shy young man named Brookes played by Peter Sutherland who Meets a deaf girl named Anne played by Vanessa Vaughan. Brookes's brother Cleveland played by Peter Spence is a real loser who gets Brookes in trouble and has problems of his own. It was during one of Cleveland's pranks that Brookes meets Anne, The two brothers emotional problems stem from the fact that their Mother left them when they were at an early age.
The point of the movie is the way that the two young lovers Vanessa and Brookes who are from different backgrounds with their own emotional problems, help each other overcome their individual difficulties.
The film takes place in Montreal, and most of the scenes leave no doubt where it was filmed. There is so much music in the film; one could almost call it a musical. The music of the great big bands of the past adds to the film.
The lead actors Sutherland and especially Vaughan with the excellent direction of Allan Eastman make for a good sensitive love story.
Holy Smoke (1999)
Could have been Great.
Holy Smoke is the story of an Australian girl, Ruth Barron played by Kate Winslet, who goes to India and gets involved in a cult. Her family gets concerned about her and lures her back home. They then hire PJ Waters, played by Harvey Keitel, who is an experienced councillor, who try's to save her from the cult Beliefs.
The story line of Holy Smoke had the makings of a great film but totally messed up by the director Jane Campion. Kate Winslet was marvellous as the lead character Ruth Barron; she was the only saving grace of the film. The rest of the cast added noting to the film. Harvey Keitel was not well cast in the role of the P J Waters as the exit councillor. Maybe if the role of Waters had kept a more serious vane and not stooped to such silliness with him appearing as a cross dresser he could have pulled it off. Over all what could have been a great film ended up being mediocre at best. Poor direction bad casting. Sex scenes bordering on porn, did not help make it any better
Being There (1979)
Sellers a work of Art.
Being There is a film about a simple and mildly retarded gardener, played by Peter Sellers who's entire adult life was gardening for an elderly gentleman and watching television. When the old man dies, Chancey is left homeless and on his own. Due to his past recluse surroundings he is unaware of the every day technology, such as telephone, elevators etc., which leads to some comical situations. He is saved from the streets, by a wealthy woman, Eve Rand, played by Shirley MacLean. When her limo backs into him she takes him home to be treated by her dying husbands physician Dr Allenby played by Richard Dysort. Everyone mistakes Chancey's simple mutterings as profound insight and wisdom. Benjamin Rand played by Melvin Douglas is a wealthy influential business tycoon who is well connected in politics and a personal friend of the President, played by Jack Warden. They also mistake the simple utterance's as insightful.
Although the film is comical at times, it is also very sad, as Chancey lacks awareness of what's going on around him most of the time. He has no reaction, even when Eve Rand, tries to seduce him, which is one of the many humourous scenes.
The filming and directing is good and the film moves along with a good pace, and is very entertaining and a must see for all Peter Sellers fans. Once again Sellers shows the incredible talent, that he was so well known for.
Pacific Heights (1990)
Landlord Beware
A good film about what a psychotic can do, to ruin a person's life. A young couple played by Melanie Griffith and Matthew Modine, buys there dream house and the new tenant played by Michael Keaton wrecks havoc with their lives. The story is supposed to be based on a true story. If this is true, then anyone who is a landlord might become paranoid about future tenants. Micheal Keaton comes off as a very realistic psychotic. Overall a good film with good acting
Dancing in the Dark (1986)
A great performance
Marta Henry accomplished what is the test of a real actor. She played a lead role with less dialog, then the rest of the cast except for the voice over. She was exceptional. The film was very slow moving and very dull most of the time. I stayed with the film for Marta Henry's performance. The film rates a 2.5 but in view of the key role it rates a 4
