Atlanta: Tarrare (2022)
A bit too much
Well, I like the show surrealism and absurdity. That being said, on most of the other episodes there's a meaning or a thread of sense/narrative within the chaos presented, in this one there isn't and because of that most of the episode feels completely pointless. It's not a self-contained side story nor a character development episode, it tries to be both and fails miserably by ignoring their own character personalities and trying to be over the top on it.
I don't know, I really wished I had liked this one because I love most of the other episodes and although I feel season 3 was worse than the previous two, most of the episodes hold up. This one really doesn't. It's disappointing as a season finale and hopefully they get it right on season 4.
The Umbrella Academy: Meet the Family (2022)
I don't understand
What was the point of this episode? Honestly, so many terrible acting with weird moments. It looks nothing like S2, what is happening. I really hope it improves on the next ones.
How I Met Your Father (2022)
Trying to force something they dont have
The HIMYM actors had chemistry and talent, the ones from this show whether don't have that or are not showing at all.
None of the jokes land. Literally.
The Simpsons: Lisa's Substitute (1991)
Very lovely
I think this is the best episode of the show. It was funny and had lots of heart. All characters (even Homer!) act in human ways even with all of the silliness of the show, which is just wonderful.
Grand Army (2020)
Is it really more realistic?
I feel like people saying this is realistic picture of what it is to be a teenager are comparing with the Disney shows. It is not super unrealistic, but it's definitely exagerated in some points.
I liked it a bit in some points, but honestly it isn't anything special. A bit different than what we've been receiving lately as far as teenager drama goes, I guess.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
It gets so much better as seasons goes
Don't get me wrong, S1 is good too, but it was just an ok sitcom at S1. It became a great one on S2 and better and better as it goes. The characters are very well written, and have discerning personalities, as well it's very much funny, specially when you get to know the characters better.
BoJack Horseman (2014)
It's my most watched and loved show ever
I'm so grateful for all the writers and artists for creating a show with such brilliant narrative. It really makes you laugh, cry and genuinely care for all these anthropomorphic animals more than I cared about in any other show.
It's a such an amazing experience and re-watching multiple times I can see the small details on the background related to animation, jokes and deep messages, some of them even foreshadowing the next episodes. As a "hobby writer" this motivates me to write more, I will never get to writing such a great mix of comedy and drama that this had, but at least I know that creativity and genuinely caring about what you are writing and adding to your story is rewarded.
This show leaves an extremely amazing legacy (and it ended with high ratings even, that is super rare!) to all entertainment industry honestly, with multiple videos about the philosophy of each character as well as some real relatable moments, not just shallow ones. The struggles with anxiety, depression, the guilt trip that some people move towards, being addicted to work, addicted to relationships... There's plenty of real messages to see here.
Thank you Kate Purdy, Raphael Bob-Waksberg and all the amazing cast of other writers (as well as the actors) for this show. I mean it. I hope you all are very successful because you clearly have amazing talent.
New Girl: Goldmine (2014)
Sexism at its worst
The episode is full of sexist jokes on all storylines of it
The Midnight Gospel (2020)
Surprisingly insightful
Honestly the first episode sold me meditation and mindfulness in a way no other coach or book sold before. And I don't say this in a bad way, it's surprisingly insightful on the conversation but crazy on the visuals/actions which makes for a really weird (the good kind of weird) experience.
Shameless (2011)
It starts well, gets better, but then they just try to milk out as much as possible
This show was supposed to end a long time ago. Main actors started to leave and the plot doesn't really get better (or even stays the same) without them. Like, really, Fiona's actor, which was arguably the "main main character" of the show, left the show and they just kept going.
Most original characters are really well made and likable (Debbie being the one I have a bit of an issue with), but the problem with shows that have this is that, when you remove them, it loses substance. It lost its substance, I didn't feel interested on rebooting the story because the show was interesting by its story, not by its setting necessarily.
Props for the Ian & Mickey relationship though. I just love the chemistry and realness those two have together. Not even touching how important that is to be shown on television as we go into the "being gay or not is normal and everyone should accept it", which is a really good message as well.
Little Women (2019)
Heartfelt story that goes off the common tales
I just finished watching it and I have to say this movie positively surprised me, I loved the ending and the "let's not finish with a happy marriage ending just because". The idea of the book publisher pushing into the marriage happening, and that happening on the story in which also seemed pushing it (I mean, she had like two interactions with the guy onscreen, purposely not selling their love that much).
I only didn't like the main Masculine character (Teddy) and how that ended in a positive note of "well I wanted to marry your sister for years, but I guess now out of nowhere I love you", but maybe that was also part of the "well women are pushed on stories to always marry", which is true. Jo's talk about how much she hates women are reduced to that, but that she feels lonely even though she has those convictions (which are true btw, women DO get pushed into being just about love and marriage) was a really awesome part of dialogue.
I also loved all the girls characters and a lot of the supporting cast. They were just amazingly good together and I cannot stress enough that I think the Oscar nod was very well deserved.
Rick and Morty: Rattlestar Ricklactica (2019)
it's kind of just reference after reference
I'm starting to feel like some people are still sold due to the fandom and not to the show itself anymore. Nothing about this episode is original, with it just being a big reference with small other references inside. It hardly makes it funny.
Rick and Morty: The Old Man and the Seat (2019)
Not really sold on S4
I love most episodes (not really a fan of the Vindicators one, I feel the narrative was a bit weak on that one) until S4. And well, S4 is not terrible, but is not great either. The two episodes that were released until now were a bit in the weaker end of comedy and waaaaaaaay weak end on the "drama" part of this whole thing.
I mean, even S4E2, which has its "emotion" just felt rushed. I was never really sold on the guy that died (which I don't even remember the name, to see how forgettable that character was) being a friend with Rick because they just talked like in 2 to 3 instances on the episode. It felt rushed, not giving us enough time to care about that character before he died and Rick got sad. Also, I have a hard time caring about Rick on S4 because he is sounding like a whinny little baby on some occasions.
Queer Eye (2018)
I love the way the show deals with its premise
This show doesn't really force specific styles or beauty standards while actively improving the appearance and self-esteem of those that participate in the program. That's remarkable I would say.
I don't know if everything is agreed upon before, if this is entirely produced and not natural, but it does feel natural. I genuinely end up caring about them AND the people they are helping, which says a lot.
I specially love Johnathan. I think a lot of the show spark comes from him having his moments, which I see some people don't like because of gay stereotypes but I feel that's just his personality, he is not forcing that, so it shouldn't be a problem (as being "flamboyant" is not supposed to be a bad thing in my pov, it's only bad if together with arrogance which Johnathan never has). Also, feels forced to say the show is perpetuating a gay stereotype by having just ONE of 5 gay men with this kind of personality.
How I Met Your Mother: How Your Mother Met Me (2014)
For me this was the high point of a low season
It was an adorable episode that helps us love Tracy's character even more. Everything about this episode doesn't seem forced and tells a genuinely heartfelt story.
She is indeed the best love pair for Ted, and I fell like a lot of people felt she was perfect for them either. I know I did, she was just so warm, happy but sad. In the scene she looks to the sky and starts talking to Max and the music scene are just two of the best scenes of the show.
This makes the 9th season a lot more bittersweet because it has so many low points with just a few actively good episodes. But this episode definitely proves the writers still had it, I wish they weren't so strict on how they wanted the ending to be.
Shazam! (2019)
Silly, but enjoyable.
Pretty much the title of this review sums it up, the movie is funny sometimes, Shazam being a kid is a good idea as it makes pretty silly moments of a grown up man acting like a full child (without forcing too much on it as well), but it's sort of predictable, so not a masterpiece by any means. After a while some plot conveniences start to happen, so you sort of know what is going to happen and the movie becomes cheesy instead of a story with some comedy bits.
The story makes you sympathetic to the characters, but not too much. You get the feeling that his mom is an horrible person right from the beginning of the movie, as it's hardly believable she didn't find him on the park after the policemen help him announcing it, so the moment where the shazam kid sees here you already know she abandoned him even though he doesn't want to believe it. His grief over this is super quick as well so it goes into the Adam Sandler movies direction for a bit there (dramas solved in 2 seconds, characters immediately feeling good and going fight villains), but the cheesy ending is a good ending nevertheless
The Simpsons (1989)
Stop stealing someone else's Emmy
I don't get it, all the reviews say The Simpsons got worse, and then now they win an Emmy on a season that was just terrible. I really don't get how can they be so deluded as to try to make us believe this show actually deserved any Emmy this year.
BoJack Horseman: Free Churro (2018)
The best episode in one of the best shows ever
I love this episode so much, it has so much feeling into it, so many unanswered questions this adult that struggles understanding life has. If ever decide "I will watch just one episode of this show" please watch this one. It summarizes the pain of someone in deeply mental issues that he does not know how to solve. It relates to reality so much they put this whole "you're making an asshole sound likeable" argument INSIDE THE SHOW, making us wonder if WE are assholes for liking bojack so much.
