Tales of the Unexpected: The Orderly World of Mr. Appleby (1980)
Complete Garbage. Read On.
This series should be called "Tales of the Expected". There are so many episodes similar to this; husbands and wives trying to bump each other off for insurance. How this series lasted so long is beyond comprehension.
Amy (2009)
Like a scene from a bad soap opera.
Entertaining for all the wrong reasons, with some truly over the top acting from the two main actors. The style of acting and direction is reminiscent of Victoria Wood's soap parody Acorn Antiques.
One cannot fault the ambition of the producer/director Paul Burton, even going as far as filming this at Elstree Studios, but as most of the action takes place in one room and on a staircase it could have been filmed anywhere. Filmmaking can be an expensive hobby, one wonders how much the actors were paid. The film has been broadcast on the Information TV channel.
There seems to be two morals to this film; don't drive and use a mobile phone and don't make films without a decent storyline.
Robinson in Space (1997)
A gloriously hypnotic travelogue.
A glorious hypnotic travelogue through the industrial landscapes of Britain. Beautifully shot with a static camera, and gently narrated by Paul Schofield; who would have thought that scenes of lorries driving into distribution centres could be so visually charming?
The journey begins in Reading and ends in Newcastle upon Tyne with stops at travel lodges, shopping centres and factories mixed with the occasional cultural or historic location. It's also an excellent snapshot of the political climate of the time.
We never get to see Robinson or the narrator on their journey, but by the end of the film we feel as though we've learnt a bit about them along with a side of Britain we usually try to ignore.
