Robin Hood (2018)
I am not a merry man
It's definitely a film where things happen followed by other things and contains characters. It's a frikkin mess though. Character motivations aren't given time to actually make sense, they don't bother with the main things associated with Robin Hood until the very end when they cockily set up a sequel that will never be made. Feels like chunks are missing. Shouldn't have bothered. CGI is shoddy too.
Egerton puts in a fine performance, Minchin comes across as a poor mans Bill Bailey. They occasionally throw in a joke but it's so rare that it feels completely out of place (Tuck wasn't even comic relief which I expected seeing as this is supposed to be "gritty"). It relies entirely on you knowing that the Sheriff of Nottingham is a bad guy from the start, but elevates him to "pretty much the King for some reason and Nottingham is basically all of England somehow" without bothering to explain where he sits as far as actual power goes (bar one line where they say that it's the bank of the church). One scene appears to have everyone in damn near modern dress with modern sounding music. No idea why. Generally people don't really look period. Even if they do and it IS accurate they don't LOOK accurate so it takes away from feel of the thing. Just ranting now to be honest...
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
More like this please Scottish film industry.
Well not EXACTLY like this but...you know what I mean. Being a BIT generous with the rating but only a bit (I'm a bit old to be target audience as well). The main cast do a decent job, a couple are excellent a couple less so. A few of the songs are fantastic. It wears the Shaun of the Dead influence on its sleeve at times and could maybe have done with going that way a bit more. Starts like a better Nativity film but if you're going to blow your rating then just hit the ground running.
The Party's Just Beginning (2018)
The director's just beginning
Very good for a first time effort and was nice to see bits of home on screen (that walk home would be mental though). It's a bit scattered and Karen may have over reached a bit as there are a few too many different issues thrown in BUT shows promise for the future.
