Campy, cheesy, silly, FUN
13 April 2024
If you only ever take your movies very seriously, if you can't enjoy a good silly spy movie, or if you turn your nose up at purposeful camp, this is not going to be the film for you.

This IS campy. This IS silly. It's ALMOST Austin Powers-level of silliness, in some parts, and all of this is done so very well! What a great set of actors to bring it all to life.

This movie throws seriousness out the window entirely, and I love that about it! There's a good amount of the movie which is wholly believable, as far as fictional onscreen action is concerned (in itself not realistic; rather, just a level of unreality that has become generally accepted in films), so you don't necessarily realize it at first.

I would expect that the people who hated this were perhaps hoping for something "deeper".

If you're capable of just enjoying a fun, silly movie - which also happens to have excellent actors doing a fantastic job of just enjoying the ride, themselves - and you can recognize and appreciate when the nonsense is PURPOSEFUL, you can likely get an entertaining evening out of 'Argylle'.

Skip it if this doesn't sound like something you can manage ;)

Road House (2024)
10/10
This is an action movie - and it's a great one!
23 March 2024
I loved it. My dad, an old-school classic action flick kind of guy, would have loved it. I have no idea what some reviewers were expecting (historical drama, maybe?), but this is an action movie, and it is particularly well executed as such.

This movie is not trying to be the original Road House, and that is one of the things that really stands in its favour.

It DOES have the good stuff many of those old-school classic action flicks had/have: outrageously tough characters, absolutely full of one-liners, and though I see comments dragging McGregor, the guy brings over-the-top villainy; another action flick staple that manages to work (I mean, this villain features an insanely popping swagger, whether in bright purple satin pants with no shirt, or nude but for shoes and socks. When you see this swagger, you'll understand why I make specific mention of it).

I liked that Gyllenhaal was; to my mind, unnervingly smiley and calm; the character just 'this' side of what a relatively "normal" appearing smiley calm person would be. A little off and a little weird, but decidedly likeable. McGregor's maniacal grin was a much more overt, but I liked that both Gyllenhaal and McGregor are clearly messed up in the head; the latter decidedly more unhinged, but each doing their personal crazy, just in different ways.

Gyllenhall put THE WORK into his physique for this role; his fighting movements are fluid and strong, and he definitely put the work in there, too. It's worth mentioning, as I expect he did quite a bit of training; most people don't just already know how to throw down like that!

The fight action is crisp, close, and FAST; sometimes like first-person action video games, and like those games, it takes a bit of getting used to. Here, it's thanks to the new techniques they've used to stitch live scenes with graphics. You CAN tell, and that takes away the realism a touch; however, since graphics don't need to pull a hit at the last second (as with real actors' real movements in fight scenes we're used to), I felt there was more than enough compensation in the resulting follow-through effect of the punches, kicks, and slams. The hits look HARD.

I'm glad to see Jessica Williams (Frankie) in this role; she's always fantastic, and Arturo Castro (Moe - the guy with the arm cast) delivers a perfect comedic side character. B. K. Cannon (Laura - the bartender) isn't familiar to me, but I thought she and other members of the bar staff felt quite natural in its setting and atmosphere. A lot of smaller parts, with a great cast, all around.

The music is worth noting, as well. I noticed that there was care taken to focus on each live band briefly as they played. Great musicians featured, and it's a damn good soundtrack.

All in all, this is an excellent movie for a number of reasons; not even action alone. Rather than trying to match it to is namesake movie in any way, I'd really recommend just enjoying the ride.

Disappointingly bland
17 March 2024
I like a slow-burn horror or suspense, but this movie was heavy on the slow and light on anything else, sadly.

I love movies that rely on your own imagination to conjure up what might be lurking; I think they are some of the best, but this one lacked the sense of dread and suspense needed to fuel the creepy imagination.

Whether it was the actor, the script, the directing, or some combination of these and/or other things, it was mostly quite bland. The main character gave very little feeling, so there wasn't that sense of investment in what happens to them.

What's disappointing is that this could have been an awesome creeper. The idea is there, but the execution just was not.

Ignore pretentious reviews, enjoy a feel-good kids movie
2 October 2023
Reviews here seem to have pretentiously high expectations for this movie; however, this is a warm-hearted, feel-good, happily-ever-after movie that is well suited for kids - its target audience!

Adults will absolutely find it predictable, but it's a great story for kids, and it's also beautifully animated.

Characters are fun and enjoyable; there is no gore, or violence in excess; it's a classic underdog hero story, and we have main characters (aliens, in this case) working together to defeat the villain (a misguided human), while learning some lessons about appreciating our loved ones, along the way.

I'd recommend it for adults who just want a fun, predictable story with quality graphics, and even more for kids who might enjoy a sci-fi adventure, geared towards them.

Wild blend of parody, comic book, video game, cartoon, music video, and purposeful B-movie
26 February 2023
Parody, comic book, video game, cartoon, music video and purposeful B-movie styling - a really weird mashup of all these things. I think you'll either be in the mood for this one, or absolutely hate it (seems a lot of people feel the latter!)

Personally, I found it entertaining; I like the broad mix of so many different varieties and styles of visual storytelling, and also the cheesy feel of the live-action scenes. As noted, I do think you have to be in the mood to take in this particular, wild style, and you'll probably enjoy the experience more if you know what you're getting into. With the visual and auditory flashes, the unabashed violence, and the overall weirdness of the show; it's a lot of detail to take in and to follow.

This is an alternate Earth reality; different historical events than our own. We've got comic book-style heroes and villains, a whodunnit mystery, a world in chaos, and the looming threat global war.

Worth a look, but NOT if you're not in the mood to stomach something this in-your-face!

Visually stunning; story felt "off"?
25 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This may seem kinda hypersensitive, but particularly because it's a kids' movie, I felt oddly uncomfortable while watching this.

Right away, you do get a sense that there's life existing in the "underground" beings and landscape - but still, it's all pretty casually ripped apart, burned, and electrocuted by these humans, as they around.

It made for the sense that the story felt "off"; like they could have addressed that existence of life a little better; at least subtly? For the most part, there's not a whole lot of care or consideration on the humans' side; not for a long while.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, although the humans realize their error later on, there's little real remorse; like "OH WOW. It's US who have been terribly harming and actively killing this living being thing for decades! We really feel terrible!" - instead it's more like "oh the PLANTS are bad. Look what the PLANTS have done. I guess we should fix that ...but geez it's really a shame that we won't be able to use plant power, anymore." :/

That being said, this movie is absolutely beautiful to look at. The creatures and the world are so carefully crafted; so unique and vibrant, it's an imaginative and amazing thing to see. So even if you don't care for the story (I see others found it a bit boring), it's worthwhile for the eyeballs.

Ready to see this as the stage show it's working to be
26 November 2022
I am not much of a fan of most 'traditional' Christmas shows, and I'm not very festive in general. But I have my seasonal things, and this was for me what "Scrooged" (Bill Murray) was, back in the day.

Fun, warm, unique twist on a classic tale, and a really enjoyable watch with some really fantastic actors bringing a great show. Not to mention the dancers and singers throughout - this really felt like a stage show come to life; seemingly quite purposeful, and it was amazing for it!

If Will Farrell is sometimes too... Will Farrell-y for you, be assured that he is at his best in this movie.

This is now on my (very, very short) list o festive movies to love.

Classic "don't compare movies to books", with late-80's camp
22 October 2022
Rarely are movies as good as or better than the book, so I would suggest taking this as: A Movie (rather than a-movie-based-on-a-book); appreciate it for what it is.

The level of campy cheese felt appropriate and true to the time (there's even the school assembly with requisite tacky guest speakers).

Somewhat more campy and cheesy towards the end, but Abby Rivers is so excellently played by Elsie Fisher that you might find it worth your time just for the sake of her. The awkward teenager with acne is so rarely shown well in movies, this was a shining example of how to really execute this kind of character. I appreciated her (and the makeup/FX team's) conveyance of a real sense of the character she was portraying.

Back in the day, makeup didn't stay put on your face, and there weren't videos to show us how to apply it well, either. In movies, we often see a clear-skinned, beautiful girl with glasses shoved on her face to give the impression of some sort of nerdy type, but in this movie, we see a teenager whose back is slouched, whose skin is textured, and whose wardrobe is not as fashionable as her friends'. She is glaringly awkward; it feels more genuine. Elsie Fisher is a stand-out in this movie, for sure.

This is not a Hollywood blockbuster film in budget or in final product, but it's a good little movie and a fun watch!

Archaic for its time?
10 September 2022
Made in the year 2000, I wonder why there wasn't effort to cast THE main character with consideration to the Inca setting of the whole movie.

I won't rate this film, given that I'm watching over 20 years after its release, but it was disappointing and I really expected better, even for its time. :( Certainly, there will be people who wonder why it matters at all, but representation does matter; for the children watching these movies, for the way we all represent marginalized people in our society; it really is worth understanding and I feel like we knew better even then.

Ultimately, I found it distracting; the Inca Emperor is voiced very distinctly by a well-known actor who is a poor fit for the heritage presented. Not a commentary on David Spade himself, so much as it being "yet another film" where representation wasn't a factor in casting in a pretty glaring way, without any discernible reason.

I was looking forward to watching this movie, but I was really disappointed with Disney, on this one. I guess it's a cult classic, but I don't see why, personally.

Voice acting needs to vibe with the content on the screen; that's pretty fundamental, particularly if it's THE main character. Couldn't get into it :/

Spectacularly not great (visually stylish, though)
17 May 2022
Loved the appearance and the style, which is why I watched it to the end. Just really not great a movie altogether, though; it fell flat from start to end.

Could be that it just didn't translate well to English, I suppose.

A classic
30 October 2021
Worth the watch. Throwing it back to 2009, this movie gave me an appreciation for Megan Fox as an actress; more than just (IRONICALLY - "Jennifer's BODY") her body/appearance.

She's so fantastic at The Spooky in this movie; the (apparent?) blacklisting of her as an actress is a shame.

The casting overall is excellent; the movie is a fantastic. Worth your time; watch it.

EXCELLENT
21 November 2020
If this genre is your jam, I would wonder HOW you could possibly find flaw in this movie. SUCH an amazing performance by all cast members; obvious call-out to James McAvoy, whose apparent acting genius is well on display, here. Excellently written and directed, as well. This is the third movie in a series, and I would love to see more.

Just what I hoped it would be
30 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was very much looking forward to this movie, and it didn't disappoint; a horror movie with a "what if Superman WASN'T good" bent to it. Jackson A. Dunn excellently played the part of the character Brandon Breyer and really made the movie, for me.

I see that other reviewers felt there was missed opportunity to explore the deeper "whys", but I felt that the movie was good for what it was and just as it was.

**spoiler**

I particularly appreciated that the parents were loving and nurturing - and that it didn't make any difference in the outcome.

Reminiscent of Ugly Americans
14 October 2019
These short, bite-sized little episodes remind me of "Ugly Americans" - which was a great cartoon we lost way too soon.

I would love to see longer, even 15 minute episodes of "You're Not a Monster". I don't know if the plan is to move forward with anything more than what's already been assembled, but I'm rooting for this little show to find its footing and give us more!

I loved what they were AIMING for...
1 June 2019
This movie was frustrating, because it was SO CLOSE to being great...and yet it fell SO SHORT.

I don't know if it was the screenplay itself, the directing, or the final editing, but somewhere along the way, there was a failing or failings. Very simple elements make some of the scenes almost ridiculous (call in an airstrike and its arrival can be counted in seconds; an insane amount of mercury exposure leaves everyone utterly unaffected, etc.); it's as though they needed to get from point A to point B and decided that it didn't really matter how the journey was achieved. When telling a story, HOW you get from point A to point B is EVERYTHING! There is a significant difference between suspension of disbelief and unbelievably to the point of distraction; the elements of the story need to actually make sense.

Again, it was SO CLOSE to being excellent; if there had been care for so many relatively simple details, this movie could have been something amazing.

Excellent cast, great performances, but so disappointing.

Delightfully weird and wonderful
1 June 2019
This movie was delightfully weird and wonderful, and absolutely stunning, visually.

It is NOT the story of the girl in the original Nutcracker story; rather, it is the story of one of her daughters. If people go into this movie expecting the original Nutcracker, they will likely end up disappointed; head into it with an open mind and the knowledge that this is a different story altogether, and you might just enjoy it as much as I did!

SPECTACULAR
24 March 2019
I could (and will) watch this movie over and over and over again. Its quick, clever composition means I catch new details to appreciate every time, and visually it is just downright stunning.

An excellent cast deliver excellent performances; the dialogue is great and the characters are charismatic.

I like that we're not given a standard issue hero-love-story, and I like the subtle things; for example, how the mage appears to really need to exert herself when controlling animals, or how the tip of the sword is dragged across the ground at one point (expressing the heavy, unwanted burden of it).

This movie is a favourite.

Pan (2015)

Unconventional, beautiful RETELLING of a classic.
11 November 2016
It is so important to note that this is a RETELLING of a classic story. This isn't quite the Peter Pan you already know, and it's not meant to be!

Also important to note that this is an ORIGIN story; Peter was not yet the legendary Pan. An EXCELLENT job by Levi Miller as Peter, the real lead of the movie, by the way.

Another reviewer noted that it was not quite a movie for young children; the feel is somewhat dark, there is death of adults and children alike (though it is not gory). I would agree with that reviewer, and I personally figure that it could have been more clearly expressed in the marketing that; along with not being the story people are accustomed to hearing when they think of Peter Pan, the story is also a bit more harsh and not geared toward YOUNGER children. Mind you, it IS rated PG rather than G, so I suppose that could have been a clue for parents - ratings are given for a reason, afterall! In any case, I took this movie for the darker, reworked variation that it is meant to be; and as a result, I loved it. Visually it's just stunningly beautiful, with seamless effects; the villain has a solid reasoning behind the villainy (rather than just innate evil); and the storyline is very well executed.

Shame about all the negative feelings people have towards this movie; I would have loved to have seen a sequel!

Enjoyed the Cast, Loved the Styling - I LIKE This Show
29 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Two episodes in, and a lot of complaining going on about this show - people apparently feeling that it did not meet their expectations.

Well I LIKE this show!

~OVERALL FEELING~

I've seen reviews suggesting that there's a lot of 'overacting' and cheesiness, however I actually like the approach. It feels more like a comic book come to life, which is what I was hoping for.

I didn't WANT to feel like I was just watching another cop drama which maybe just happens to contain some future villains. The 'larger than life' feel separates this show for me - and in a good way.

I also like that we get to see Gotham in the cold light of day. The 'real' cityscape shots are blended nicely via CGI to give Gotham its requisite Gothic accents, and the buildings are given a bit of a dirty, gray-streaked appearance too; so that even though it's not always the usual nighttime scenes we're accustomed to, we still know we're in Gotham city. That being said, there is a good balance of night scenes, as well.

~CHARACTERS~

FISH MOONEY is powerful and glamorous; she speaks with the flair of an old school comic book villain, and I love that. She rules with a necessary iron fist of violence, because pre-Batman Gotham is supposed to be BAD. REALLY BAD. I think Jada Pinkett Smith is an excellent combination of elegance and strength, here.

DET. JAMES GORDON is the determined Good Guy Cop. I like that they have him wanting to do the right thing, but not necessarily going around behaving like an utter sissy at the same time. To me, Ben Mckenzie has something reminiscent of a poor man's Russel Crowe, here; but in a good way. I thought he balanced the good guy thing very well, without coming across as too perfect (which would be annoying).

By contrast, his partner DET. HARVEY BULLOCK is the grizzled and jaded Cop Who's Seen It All. I found the character likable; you want to root for him to be a better person. Donal Logue does a great job at bringing that likability to the character, in my opinion.

For different reasons, I felt that you also want to like the OSWALD COBBLEPOT character - maybe even feel a bit bad for him. He tries to be accepted, says nice polite things; but then he goes and does something psychotic - like beating on the dude in the alley with gleeful abandon, or killing another poor dude for a convenient sandwich - and then we see that the veneer of sanity is actually rather thin, and the true villain spills out. (Again: VILLAIN, people! Evil villains, here. They aren't supposed to be behaving like "common criminals". Their very nature is meant to be over the top.) Robin Lord Taylor is a favourite for me, so far. I think he plays the character very well; flipping the switch from polite to crazy very nicely.

For the SELINA KYLE character, I have to say I preferred when she wasn't talking very much. It gave her an air of mystery that sort of dissipated when she started speaking. I suppose it makes sense for the character have the ...CATTY... smart-talking street kid attitude though, as she's meant to be a survivor who doesn't take crap from anyone. I love the look of Camren Bicondova for this part; she's perfectly cat-like. Again, I liked her best when she was sneaking around silently, but so far I still think she's a good fit for the character.

BRUCE WAYNE and ALFRED have so far been a bit in the background, for me; but that's okay because we already kind of know about them, and I'm hoping that the show will to continue to be a little more focused on the development of the various villains, anyway. I like the casting of David Mazouz as the struggling young Bruce though, and also Sean Pertwee as a younger Alfred trying to figure out how to raise this now-troubled kid on his own.

Some people seemed not to have liked the little peeks at future villains (the future POISON IVY, the future RIDDLER), but I actually liked that they kinda snuck the characters in there as a promise of what's to come.

~LOOKING FORWARD~

Overall, I'm really rooting for this show to continue and find firm footing.

So far, I like the way the story is unfolding; young Det. Gordon coming up in the police force, the paths that our various villains' lives starting to take... It has the potential to be really great if they keep growing the characters in a satisfying way, and if they slowly start to answer the questions they've set up in these first to episodes.

An Old Fashioned, Whimsical Fairytale
14 May 2014
This is NOT a sensible, practical story. It's NOT a futuristic sci-fi film, either.

I think the marketing was a touch off, because this is an old fashioned, whimsical fairytale. :)

So CHECK REALITY AT THE DOOR! I've seen complaints about a lack of logic here and there, in this movie. But in the very beginning - right in the beginning credits! - it's explained to us that this is a pair of worlds completely unlike our own. Completely different laws of gravity and physics apply, even!

You wouldn't watch Cinderella and complain about the impossibility of a pumpkin turning into a carriage, would you?! Follow along the same line of thought when watching this movie, and I think you'll find it to be a weird but sweet fantasy of a love story; visually wondrous, and something you could watch with children, too (I would have ADORED this movie, as a kid), though maybe not children who are very, very young.

I would suggest throwing the rules of 'our world' out completely, here. If you can't do that, you might end up spending the duration of this movie just picking it apart and not appreciating it at all. If you watch this movie with a light heart and storybook mentality, however, I do think it's one to really enjoy.
