Oppenheimer (2023)
You need your brain to watch this epic
Having looked through the reviews I fail to see how anyone could possibly give this less than a 7. Ok potentially 1 off for 3 hours but they flew by .
Possibly 1 off if you do not know the history or the relevance of how important this development was at the time.
God knows what else you could take points off for.
The acting is sublime with Cillian and Robert Downey Junior leading the ways of numerous 5 star cameo performances, too many to mention.
The film is a visual historical delight with the exception of the wring flag ( who cares ).
It is truly based on fact - Oppenheimer died of cancer at 62 from the chain smoking portrayed as an example. The rest of the film has been developed di well as the majority of it is on public record.
I can only advise you to see it for yourself if the subject matter is off interest and you want to know why we now live in a world full of nuclear weapons.
Beef (2023)
Overrated
Please don't make another series. This series became more bizarre the further it went and I am saying nothing about the ending.
Certainly the premise and the start is well done but like so many series what starts as a good idea then gets stretched and what should have been 4 episodes of quality become a drawn out 10.
Can't understand why the reviews are so high and I have only given it a 6 for the start of the series.
The acting is fine but some of the scenarios created lack all forms of credibility.
I would say the star of the show is the young daughter Junie who dies not have a care in the world. But make your own mind up.
Hunger (2023)
Passion for food - think again
This was a movie I never expected to enjoy as much as I did.
It has so many storyline lines to consider, poor to rich and it's impact on someone, the obscenity and decadence of those who believe it's their right through their wealth, the love story that well just watch it to see, the meaning of family and that's just to name four you may get even more out of it.
The acting was sublime and I loved the intensity throughout the whole film. I did not take my eyes of it which is rare and why I gave it a 10.
Something different and the Thai atmosphere simply added to a great storyline.
A definite watch in my view.
Wednesday (2022)
Harry Potter meets Fantastic Beasts meets Scobby Do meets the Adams family
As there are so many positive reviews, I almost did not bother but that would be unfair to such excellent storytelling,, acting, set design and direction of this series.
It is very worth of Bing watching as you try to solve the culprit or culprits through the series.
Jenna Ortega steals the show as Wednesday and is obviously going to be a world class actress for the future. There are scenes where you just feel there is no way she could have kept the Wednesday poker face when filming them. I think there would have been a lot of laughs making this, The supporting cast are first class.
Personally, I enjoyed the direction of the series both light for comedy value and dark when required. If you are not a Tim Burton fan this maybe a negative for you.
I would sum it up as Harry Potter meets Fantastic Beasts meets Scobby Do meets the Adams family. An absolute joy to watch.
Do I want a second series? Very rarely do I say this but yes please with even more mystery than this one.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Simply joyful fun
This is pure CGI science fiction with the emphasis on the latter with a love story thrown in for good measure.
Almost in a comic book style the story is the classic saving of the world but with loads of twists.
I found it well acted, a lot of fun, great CGI, and the premise believable in terms of the abduction of scientists. Of course what they were able to achieve was totally unbelievable but that's where the fun comes in.
Had Jude Law been able to fly like that in real life he definitely would have got a role in Maverick.
Gwyneth Paltrow played a journalist and the humour of the film went right to the final scene.
Also enjoyed the romantic conflict with Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth.
Overall good film to relax you, simply joyful.
Rogue Agent (2022)
A must watch
Always amazes me that real life stories are better than fiction. This is a case in point.
How the human mind can be manipulated through a relationship is something to behold. Always amazed me how people fall for romance scams but this takes it to a new level.
Great acting throughout and held my attention throughout the film
9/10 for me.,
Moonfall (2022)
Treat it as a comedy
This is beyond any possibility so treat it as a comedy and you can really enjoy the effects, the over the top acting, the built in comedy and laugh at some of the impossible action that has to make you smile. Overall an enjoyable two hours that made me laugh on numerous occasions.
If you treat it seriously you will be disappointed.
A Perfect Pairing (2022)
Expected score to be lower
It reminded me of Emily in Paris but on a sheep farm in Australia. Beautiful scenery and some real farming.
Story is remarkably predictable BUT it is a real feel good movie that you can sit and relax to.
I know the critics will find fault but why bother it was a lot of fun.
The Outlaws (2021)
Season 2 even better than season 2
Well where do you start with season 2 the genius of cat and mouse with the policy not forgetting every one wants the Dean.
The acting, humour and story line has truly developed the main characters and the new fringe characters have also play their part with humour and grace.
Totally recommend both series - 9 for series 1 and 10 for season 2.
The Time Traveler's Wife (2022)
More sexually orientated than the book but fun & better than the film
Being a lover of the book & everything time travel I started to watch this with hesitation but simply fell in love with it. I had seen Rose Leslie in Vigil and once again she commands the screen with appropriate emotions all over her face in the differing scenes. She gets a 10 for her performance.
The focus on sex through this series in addition to the is far more emphasised than in the book as I recall. Its fine I guess it sells the programme but personally would have like to have seen more of the adventures and escapes from the time travel,
Definitely worth the time to watch.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
A masterpiece of dog fighting
We saw this in an imax theatre and the visual and sound experience made it a marvellous experience.
The storyline is straightforward, the emotional pull great, the relation to the original perfect.
The master stroke for me was the dog fights in the air and STA's, the filming of which I thought was outstanding.
Totally recommend watching this true action.movie.
Praise to all of the actors who made this work so well.
Emily in Paris (2020)
Why can't people simply have fun
This is a simple well written rom com set it Paris with stunning scenery, fashion and a interesting if somewhat unlikely story line that is simply meant to be fun.
The uptight reviews should be ignored if you want something light to enjoy and in 2020 to take you from reality that is exactly what this show does. It is so needed right now.
Praise to Lily for her acting and production.
Fun, fun, fun enjoy it for what it is nothing else.
Upload (2020)
Too predictable
As others have said there is too much focus on the romance between the lead characters and not enough on the concepts or the comedy element.
Example you see a sex suit then in bed with cloths as if normal and the suit really did not appear to be doing anything as the occupant was in a bath and about as passionate as as an ice lolly. I would get a refund!
I am really trying to work out where the humour is in it.
Certainly not worth a series 2.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
What was that
Can't believe how poor this film is after all of the hype and how it can have a 7.7 rating is beyond me.
It is well over an hour to long for the story and like watching paint dry.
You are expecting something, anything to happen and it is simply boring.
The acting by Brad Pitt is the only reason I did not give it a 1.
Even the finale was so far fetched it was just an awful waste of nearly three hours.
Give it a massive miss and watch something else
Killing Eve (2018)
How to make killing sexy
Jodie Cromer is simply brilliant in and has an ability to make this series an absolutely compelling watch in both series to date. Her ability to act so many characters and distain with which she goes about her business almost makes her killings sexy.
The twist of the second series is clever and despite my expectations of being worse than the original does not fail to disappoint in any way.
The overall acting, screenplay and script all are of a high level making the plots totally believable and of cause the "relationship" with Eve makes the series such a success.
Total recommendation
Some Voices (2000)
Reasonable portrayal of mental health issues
There are elements of depression, PTSD and of course hearing voices in this film which makes it pretty realistic.
Daniel Craig and Kelly Mc Donald are excellent in their roles and work off each other perfectly. There is a great chemistry between them.
The brotherly relationship is also vital to show the support between each other.
Overall a film well acted with a real meaning behind it, hence 9 out of 10
Starfish (2016)
Well acted film about a life changing illness
Where do you start about such an emotional film showing the effects of Sepsis.
It can not be described as an easy watch but incredibly well acted with some beautiful moments. The football scene is beyond belief.
It is challenging but totally worth it to realise how a minority suffer.
The level of self pity is totally understandable and portrayed in a brilliant manner by Tom. Some may find it over the top but would any of us be any better? You can't imagine having to be in this situation.
His wife and daughter play their parts stunningly well and display love beyond imagination given the circumstances. Every element of their lives and the impact of the illness is covered.
It is a very moving brilliant 90 minutes that will stay in your mind for a long time.
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Talk about Marmite
Well you either love or hate this episode. Personally I loved it and think a lot of people missed the point of the sci fi element of the future.
Firstly limited conscience in a doll of a real brain. That concept certainly got me thinking.
Secondly full interaction between the doll and its owner - AI for kids now if you take the concept further that could become terrifying. I will let you imagination take to you potential consequences.
Then there is the image of the power of the music industry over its artists. Being a bit older Pink Floyd had similar imagery in its fantastic film "The Wall" that would be a great episode of Black Mirror so dark in its content!
Overall one of the most enjoyable episodes I have seen if you let your mind think about the concepts and thoughts rather than just the story
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
This did not win Horror of the year for no reason
The greatest thing about this film is the twist and turns. it was intense and at no point did i stop watching which can easily happen in a lot of horror movies.
It appears from the other reviews people either love this film or hate it. Personally I loved it as a good old fashioned suspense movie with a bit of the occult thrown in.
The balance of humour, suspense and chilling story line made me really enjoy this film.
The film won numerous awards which I feel justifies my view.
Split (2016)
Tedious and boring
First ever 1 rating. I am afraid to say I found this film tedious with the actors all having the American cheesy grin and numbingly boring and a very predictable story line. I must be missing something as it seems to have a high rating, which was the reason why I watched it in the first place. Its a real shame as I used to enjoy ten pin bowling.
Toast (2010)
A culinary competition for affection
A well written and excellently acted story of Nigel Slater's growing up and the competition he has for his fathers (Ken Scott) affections with his father's second partner / wife played by Helena Bonham Carter.
Nigel's desire to cook as a teenager is fun compared to the sombre start which covers his younger years and the death of his mother whose culinary skills were somewhat lacking.
Having got bored with the family Nigel turns to working in a pub where he meets his first boyfriend Stuart, a trainee ballerina.
A tragic ending has Nigel's father die leaving him with his enemy before moving to London to become a chef at the Savoy.
Great British drama in the vain of Billy Elliot and written by Lee Hall Billy Elliott's writer.
