The Saint: The Man Who Was Lucky (1962)
Season 1, Episode 11

Early Saint
5 June 2022
I just love these early episodes set in Britain. Grittier than the later episodes which were set "somewhere abroad" which became sillier and sillier. Here Roger Moore is almost believable as The Saint, unlike the caricature he became.

Clapton At His Very Best. Unmissable.
26 May 2022
At long last this film will be released on DVD/Blu-Ray/CD on 24 June 2022--some 27 years after it was filmed!

I watched it on Sky a couple of days ago --and wow, Clapton is on fire. I have never seen him play with such intensity and emotion.

If you love the blues, or even if you don't and wonder what all the fuss is about, I urge you to watch this film.

Along with Eric playing a live concert there is also footage of a lot of the old blues players such as Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, T Bone Walker and others.

Eric's back-up band is wonderful especially the horn section and piano player.

He plays a variety of guitars but it isn't till he picks up his Gibson ES-335 that you wonder why he bothers to play anything else. Truly a match made in heaven.

Highly highly recommended.

Normal People Mark II.
17 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Normal People with a different cast. Everything else is the same. Angst ridden characters, same acting mannerisms, similar locations, and soppy music . Has Lenny Abrahamson got just the one directing style? Three episodes in and they now about to go off to stay in a villa somewhere abroad. Sound familiar? I'm done with it.

Here We Go Again--English Patriotism In The Firing Line
21 June 2021
Truly awful.

Why is it only the English are vilified and pilloried--and by their own countrymen I may add--for being patriotic? Usually by the left wing intelligentsia and so called comedians.

I know of no other nation where this is the case--not even other parts of the UK. Nobody ever knocks the Scots or the Welsh or the Irish. Look at St. Patrick's Day--is anything more patriotic than that? It is celebrated worldwide. But just you try criticising them for it. Go on, I dare you.

Totally Unrealistic
17 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Totally unrealistic. Since when has jazz been bound by having to stick to a strict tempo? It's not music for ballroom dancing for goodness sake. The whole point of jazz is that it is supposed to allow the player freedom. A good jazz drummer will know when to push the beat and when to hold back. The last few minutes are truly awful where Andrew unilaterally decides to build a shed(derogatory term for a drum solo) which ultimately gets Fletcher on his side. As a jazz fan I hated it.

Low Budget Mini Masterpiece
3 November 2020
Unlike most reviewers on here I thought this was a terrific movie. Low budget yes, but all the better for it in my opinion. Much more realistic than those glossy films that have had a load of money thrown at them. And to those complaining about its slow pace, it says more about your lack of concentration than anything else. It allows the characters room to develop and the atmosphere to build. There is a sense of foreboding and the thought that something awful is about to happen. Coming of age/coming out dramas are not my usual fare but this was really well done.

Friends With Benefits
8 October 2020
Dear oh dear yet another series about a bunch of 20-somethings. It makes me think of "Friends" + sex. The problem is it's neither funny nor romantic nor sexy. It's filled with two dimensional characters I have no empathy for. And of course it has to be littered with the now obligatory foul and profane language. I will confess I have only watched two episodes but that is more than enough for me.

Robert Palmer: Addicted to Love (1986 Music Video)

Fantastic!
8 June 2020
I love the song but most of all I adore the girls in the video. They were all models working in London at the time and were hired by Terence Donovan for the shoot which took one day at a studio in Holborn London. Although they didn't know each other prior to the shoot they became great mates. They have all carved out successful careers in various fields and have remained in touch to this day. When asked by an interviewer what was the worst part of the day one of the girls said having to leave at the end! Although obviously not choreographed they all moved in time and on the beat. I suppose it would be considered a bit non PC these days by some people but I think it's fantastic. 10/10.

Unadulterated Tripe
27 April 2020
I have recently been watching reruns of the original Van Der Valk and this latest version is not fit to lick its boots. I was going to write a long critique listing all the things that are wrong with it but having read the other reviews they pretty much have said all I was going to say. All I would add, which I don't think has been mentioned, is why does half the cast speak with their normal voices and the other half with a Dutch accent? Avoid like the proverbial.....

The Best Ever
24 April 2020
This is the last episode of the first series and I have to say it is the best single episode I have seen of any long running drama. Ever. Period. From the humour of Gene Hunt's rants to the edge of your seat, shocking denouement, it had everything. Twists and turns galore. The script was tight and well written, and delivered perfectly by all members of the cast. Anybody who says it is inferior to Life on Mars is deluded. It is better in every way. Currently being reshown on the Drama Channel, do not miss it. I cannot wait for series two to start.

Outnumbered: Christmas Special 2012 (2012)
Season 4, Episode 8

Awful
25 December 2012
I hate kids, especially precocious ones so it was to my surprise that I found myself firstly liking and then loving this series. The performances of all the characters(including the adults!)was extraordinary and the scripts hilarious. But the 2012 Christmas Special unfortunately was absolutely dire. Why?Well I think the main problem is that the kids have grown up.Ben is now twelve but looks at least eighteen and Karen is ten and looks about fourteen. The scriptwriters took a decision to relegate them to supporting roles and instead concentrated on a (very)odd bunch of party guests all of whom overacted like mad.Couple this with a director who thinks it is trendy not to use a Steadycam and you have a disaster. I don't know if another series is planned but I certainly hope not. It's run its course.
