Killing Season (2013)
Everything here is bullshit!
At one point in the movie, the two male leads are sitting and drinking in the cabin and DeNiro's character says to Travolta's: "Everything here is bullshit, bullshit house, bullshit car, bullshit fiber-glass bow". He forgot to include the movie as well. He should have also added: "But the biggest bullshit of all is your wonderful Serbian accent". I don't understand how DeNiro could keep a straight face listening to Travolta's accent throughout the movie. Why is DeNiro even in the movie? Maybe the Serbians should give Travolta an honorary citizenship and invite him to live in Serbia and give him elocution lessons.
Loha (1997)
Solid LOHA
This Kanti Shah gem should be released worldwide as MEN IN BLACK III. The two supermen actors go around dressed in complete black - Shankar (Dharmendra) with a permanently constipated expression and Arjun (Mithun) usually with a bottle in hand. Maybe both men are in permanent mourning because of the state of the society they live in. Apparently Gandhi's India is now overrun by "Underworld" Dons as the clownish villains like to call themselves; they also have a penchant for committing their heinous crimes in full view of the public, in broad daylight. And why not, when the keepers of the law are portrayed as inefficient jokers who can be fooled at will. And rape seems to be the modus operandi of the reigning villains of the day. All grudges are settled by seeking out the female relative of the enemy and raping them in broad daylight, fully clothed, I might add. Just when all seems lost for society and "Underworld Don" Luuka is set to become the undisputed Don of the day, hope materialises in the forms of Shankar and Arjun, the two roving gunda-bashers, with fists of iron and supreme fighting skills. With their entry, the villains might as well pack their bags and retire, or find another country to torment. Within the space of a few scenes, Shankar pulls down a helicopter from the sky and catches a bullet with his hands, courtesy his "panja from Punjab". From then on even God cannot help the villains. Perhaps the director Kanti Shah could have, if they would have appealed to him to make them a little tougher to add some dramatic tension to the plot.
If you appreciate this film as a good film, then you have a brain of "Solid LOHA". If you like it as a comic gem, then you have a heart of "SOLID GOLD".
Waking Ned (1998)
Funny And Beautiful.
This movie had me from the beginning, the opening scene with Jack and Annie, the lottery and the apple tart, the opening credits song by the Waterboys. The locale is beautiful, as it is usually with films set in Ireland and Scotland. The movie, as a whole, evokes the forgotten quiet corners of the world, the simple and beautiful lives of those who live there, the deep lifelong friendships formed, the memories of shared lives, literally from birth to death. The speech that Jackie gives at Ned's funeral is very touching. There is also a lot of wisdom in many of the lines spoken by the characters. In the funeral, at the end, Jackie wonders how it would be like to visit one's own funeral and hear what others had to say about oneself. If you appreciate life's simple joys, watch this movie and it will be an enriching experience.
El secreto de sus ojos (2009)
Great Work Of Art!
Great works of art are made with great love and care. They take something out of the souls of their creators. So give them your complete love and attention for the short time that you will experience them, and more often than not, they will remain with you for a long time, filling your moments with the fragrance of their beauty and magic. This is my advice to all those who crave fast-paced entertainment these days. This is a beautiful film. Perfect in many ways, from the cinematic technique to the performances. The subject matter and the themes of love and revenge will the haunt the discerning viewer for a long time after the film is over. It is a thought provoking film, but one that does so through the emotive senses, I felt. It is difficult to describe the scene towards the end where Godino's character requests to be spoken to by his own jailer. A great cinematic moment. The simplicity of the moment. A lonely old man wanting be spoken to by a companion in his last days, and yet the significance of his request in the context of all that has happened before.
Year One (2009)
Enjoyable stupidity!
I don't understand why some people dismiss this movie as stupid. Isn't that what comedy is usually about. Aristotle himself says that comedy should deal with the "ridiculous". The part where Black's character Zed eats the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge and within seconds feels himself "more intelligenter", is hilarious. He starts ruminating like a philosopher and comes to the conclusion that "everything is just so weeeird". Of course, all this is for comic purpose. So who are more stupid? The makers of the movie who make such scenes in a comedy, which being low brow is not really to be taken seriously, just enjoyed. Or the ones in real life who actually read about such a tree and believe it to be true. It's a comedy. Just enjoy it for laughs.
