Teen Witch (1989)
Bad, but awesome at the same time
This is one of those movies that is bad, but good at it. The genre would be supernatural teen comedy, and the plot can be described as "highschool looser becomes an 80's Cinderella, because she's actually a witch" to save us some time.
This is not a matter of lack of realism ("witch" is in the tittle, is just dumb to ask that), just a matter of a poor script and lousy execution.
The ultra cheesy, badly acted, awfully written moments are hilarious and you end up loving it. Did I mentioned this has some musical numbers? A locker-room packed with uncoordinated cheerleaders that bounce around singing the stupid but extremely catchy "I like boys", and the memorable out of sync rap battle "Top that".
If you like to laugh at bad movies, this one doesn't disappoint. I've seen this 5 times since i came across a VHS copy in the 90's, and it never stops being funny.
All of Me (1984)
Hilarious! Steve Martin's best movie
Steve Martin's best movie, in my opinion.
I would describe this as a supernatural screwball comedy. Some people pointed out the plot is ridiculous, and well, it's supposed to be. If you need something realistic, then this movie is not for you (neither is the entire sub genres this belongs in).
The plot is the following: A frustrated lawyer named Roger (Steve Martin) has an eccentric not-likable rich woman for a client named Edwina (Lily Tomlin) that has always been sick, and is now dying. Her plan is to make a healthy beautiful woman her heiress, and trans-mutate her soul to her body to finally have a life and be able to do the things she always wanted but couldn't do. Things don't work out as planned and she ends up sharing his body. Initially they hate each other but, forced to be in close proximity, they get to know the other better and star caring for one-another.
Steve Martin does not play Ewdina very convincingly in my opinion, he's very exaggerated and a bit extra flamboyant, but it's still very funny.
Teen Angel (1989)
Good and charming (in a mediocre kind of way)
You know those TV shows that are completely predictable, and have stereotypical characters and cheesy dialog, but you still feel like coming back? Well, this one is like that.
This was based on the movie "The Heavenly kid" (i don't know if they got paid for it or not). Basically it's about an angel (a guy who died in the 50's, there's a lot of references to that time period, as i recall) who gets missions on earth to help people. Each episode, he would help someone with some crossroads in their lives, to change their destiny for the better.
It had potential to be a weekly waste of time of the supernatural nature, such as Medium or The ghost whisperer. It was "feel good" type of show, that was the strength of it. Think of Touched by an Angel, but with a not so holy angel and no sidekicks.
Felt more like a 90's show than an 80's show, maybe that's why it failed. There's only 12 episodes, and i got to see 5 (probably, not sure). I remember the cinematography of this was very nice for the time (but i was 7 when i saw this, i might be wrong), it probably was too expensive to shoot.
As far as i know this is not on DVD. And, yes, I looked for it everywhere.
The Last Supper (1995)
Funny dark comedy about extreme political views
This is a dark comedy/drama about extreme political views and intolerance. The point of the movie is that some people just wants to be told right and have whatever opinion they have prevail in society.
The message is supposed to be that both extremes are just as bad, and the arguments of both parts are just as simple minded and void of deep, that's intentional. But also that both have the right to exist and is healthy for a society to have a wide variety of opinions.
None of the characters are supposed to be geniuses or deliver any intelligent argument, on the contrary: they're meant to be very close minded. It's obvious that the characters are supposed to be opinionated, self righteous and vapid...not to mention over the top stereotypes (and i mean both the hosts and the guests). The movie itself it's an exaggeration to illustrate a point.
As the plot progresses the characters get more sucked into violent actions (by conviction or group pressure), the bodies start to pile up and the situation spirals out of control. The only character that is more on the normal side, is the cop/sheriff (Nora Dunn). Side note: I liked her performance by the way, and I usually don't like her acting, but she was OK in this one (although not very memorable).
I'm sad to see some of the people who made reviews for the movie didn't get what it was meant to say or bother to watch this all the way through (because it's mentioned in the movie near the end, in case you are a bit slow). But that is exactly the point of the movie, some people just wants to be told right and have whatever opinion they have prevail in society.
On the comedy side, it's got a mild feel of screwball without going too crazy with it, that was very enjoyable. To put this in other words: it doesn't go into Clue or Arsenic and old lace territory, is more subtle but is still noticeable. The comedy moments are very controlled, but is still very funny if you relax and just watch it, instead of taking sides.
To sum it up, the plot is original enough to be interesting and it's very funny if you don't get defensive. It delivers what was promised.
Lady Blue (1985)
My favorite TV show when i was 5 years old
Loved Katy Mahoney, who didn't. I wanted to be a female cop just like her, i had my plastic gun (357 Magnum replica) and everything. I don't think this was any more violent than all the other cop-detective shows of the 80's (and the 80's had a lot of TV shows like that, probably why it didn't work out), just had more action scenes, and the lead was a woman. Some of the dialog and the scenes were exaggerated, but 80's shows were like that. Danny Aiello was really good in it. I saw this shows when the 80's were almost over, but being a kid at the time growing up in the most calm place you can think off, i think i'm a fair judge with the violence topic. Overall a great TV show, with a lot of action and entertaining to watch. I was very disappointed when it got canceled, only lasted 14 episodes, didn't even had a chance; TV executives are so dumb. Is this DVD out? I wan't one.
My Father the Hero (1994)
I love this movie, it's so underrated
This is a funny movie, there's not a lot of those. OK, the plot is a bit disturbing, but very original. A teen trying to get even with dad, because he hasn't been around and almost sending him to jail because she lie to impress an older boy, how could that not be funny? Plus it not the typical movie featuring teens. First remake i've seen, that is better than the original, the only problem with both: Gerard Depardieu. With another actor this would be a perfect 10, because he plays all rolls the same way, sucks. Another problem it's all the women melting over him, that's not remotely believable, he is not attractive!, y had a rubber troll that was better looking than him, come on!
