After Earth (2013)
Waist of time
I like sci-fi and I like(d) Will Smith films. This might be both and still this is a waist of time. Script and acting of Jaden Smith is so bad that you might think he plays the role of a daft boy who is not aware himself of being daft. Don't expect anything near reality, it never gets further than pure stupidity. Concerning the script I can only say that I am amazed that they found funding to shoot this. Maybe daddy Will Smith invested himself to create this father-son project. You could state that the only good element in all of this are the animals that were well designed and executed in SFX. Just too bad that even the role of animals can be considered child-like whenever animals save Kitai again while everything on this planet was supposed to kill humans. While Kitai seems a mentally challenged kid during the whole film, at the very end he turns into some sort of super human without logic explanation.
Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn (2012)
Poor movie, only for fans of the game
The game is good and has a good share of fans. This movie might appeal to most of them just for recognitions sake. From a cinematic point of view, it does not live up to it's promise.
The storyline is shallow even for a B-movie. The camera work and acting not any better. The complete movie you actually have no idea what it is going for. Combine the bad acting, story line, costume design, etc. and you get the impression of watching a final year movie from film students.
The film would do great as an extended game trailer/commercial. I think it is by far not good enough to actually present as a commercial movie. Starship Troopers is in all aspects better than this. It just shows that Game IP does generate value.
Wit licht (2008)
Dutch singer starts acting for a good cause
"White Light" is the story of a cook (Eduard Zuiderwijk played by Marco Borsato) in South Africa who wants to find the child of one of his employees. The child (Abu) was abducted to become a child soldier. The story shows the impact of such experiences to the children.
There is a lot to do about this movie since the popular Dutch singer Marco Borsato had no acting experience. He uses his popularity to support the WarChild foundation. This movie gets you right in the middle of what WarChild is all about. Marco is a typical 'feel good' guy with 'feel good' music. Don't expect a 'feel good' movie though. Reality will hit you hard in the face.
Accept the fact that Marco is a rookie actor and within the first 15 minutes you will enjoy one of the better Dutch movies ever made.
