Skinamarink (2022)
Abstractions are good, but not as a theme.
The movies pacing is off but that's because this movie is too abstract at times. I get playing into the fear of the unknown, and part of that is nice for this movies antagonist, but also never showing the main characters or decent shots of anything other that corners or the tops of doorways. I like that the movies begs the question "can an audience care about the main character(s) if they are only barely seen" as I did care for the main kids who were hunted by this evil entity. It just is something that requires a bit more thinking than needed, and it's mostly because you're having to focus extra hard on the dialogue because the movie is supposed to feel like a "home movie" but most home video audio isn't that bad. I get maybe the entity affected it but it's never implied, and again it could have been so much better deepening a flesh out of the kids as characters and making the entity more of a menace to make it scarier. To go back into the pacing, the movie will go to shots to force some sort of time movement but because there aren't any characters to develop. The movie implies a few days pass, but right in the middle instead of having showed us the characters moving along, it just tells you "oh yeah instead of the few days you feel have past 574 have!" This opens up a huge problem, in 574 days this entity barley messed with the kids, but when it did it was big. It felt like the antagonist was just lazing around, until it thought of something to do while not actively trying to do much of anything to make itself spooky or try and do something evil(I don't even know what the entity wanted as I guess it wanted to be evil just to be evil, but it didn't go that hard into doing that) I will say tho hearing the kids voices talk and be frightened did make me sad but only because it did make me remember my own past, and reminiscent of my own fears as a child but if I wanted to do that I could have paid for therapy instead of standard ticket price for this movie. I enjoyed it to some extent, but it feels incomplete.
M3GAN (2022)
Well, if you think about it
Megan does pose an interesting question brought up before with a a crossover into possessed doll genre: What if you were smart enough to make an artificial intelligence but don't think of ways to prevent or stop spiraling chaos. A few issues like how it took them years to build Megan but a few days to work out just enough kinks to make it working, much less fully autonomous and self upgrading said autonomy. I just feel like they made the main character just smart enough to have brilliant ideas, but not smart enough to have any foresight. But Meg does take the possessed doll into an interesting direction considering "evil spirits do evil" is the norm to build a generic enough slasher. Meg sets out to protect a small girl, and built upon that by progressing her autonomy, and ending in wondering if AI can become sentient.
Maria (2019)
We all know someone who uses a word they just learned too much
That's what this movie does with the blood splatter sounds, visuals, and bone cracking sound effect. When you want to watch something like John Wick but also has; language meshing, poor choreography, impossible feats of fighting prowess's, and some of the worst story possible for an action movie please enjoy this film. I understand that an action movie doesn't need to have a great or thought provoking plot, but having one that engages me and makes me care for the main character or their problems would be good enough much less good. I also have seen from other reviews that this is this directors 5th or so film directing but that's not an excuse for the absolute mess this movie is. If you want the focal point of this movie to be it's fighting, then make that movie if you want a story which would be great with some fight scenes fair too but you can't have both be lack luster at best. If this movie could be a 0 on this site, I would rate it -1 for the 1:45 Hours I've wasted on it. Don't watch.
Lightyear (2022)
This is a fine movie for what it is
I think this movie is fine. It's got a neat story(which is supposed to be its own thing) and it's really a good children's movie. I think this movie should be judged mostly on its own merits rather than have nostalgia blind how this movie is viewed. It's not a perfect movie by any means but it's a good movie for sure. I almost think it's a great movie.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Prety good film but needs a little more
It was a good film but it felt like there was one more thing to be desired. Adam acts very well here, as does Julia Fox and Kevin Garnett. The movie is an anxiety enducer which is nice to an extent because of the pacing and the wanting of more from the main charachter.
Deadly Switch (2021)
I love meravista
But only because they make bad movies. Easily one of the bottom 5 movies I've ever watched. The acting was silly the writing was subpar and the girls looked alike in the fact they were white with ginger hair, and not much else.
The Danger of Positive Thinking (2018)
The acting is just as bad as the writing
The dialoge sucks. "Am I a prude?" are you kidding me? Are you a prude for not wanting your son to cheat on his girlfriend for a woman who looks like shes in her mid 30s? Also why is this family so trusting of a random stranger? Theres a dream sequence scene that genuinly caught me off guard because I am surprised anyone decided to put any effort to put something like that in a movie like this that def couldnt have pulled it off which it didn't. Also i like how the celebrate the kids 18th birthday 6 months later which is supposed to be January as most of the plot happens in july, indicated by the July 4th celebrations with a pool party. The girlfriend magically forgave the main kid for cheating or being very willing to cheat as if nothing happened. Also the song at the end sucks. This movie is not only a waste of time for the viewer but for the Actors aswell.
The Night Clerk (2020)
Middle of the road
Serviceable movie. The pacing seems disperportionate as the last 15% seemed to have been rushed as opposed to the first 85% was slower paced. Overall an interesting story thats fairly unique.
Only Mine (2019)
Boring main character
One of the worst performances by Amber Midthunder, which isnt saying much. If it wasnt for me watching this with a friend I wouldnt have finished it as the acting is brief, due to most people just seeming like they are reading their lines. I was just as disinterested in this movie as they were. I did look up the story of the actual girl whose story they were supposed be potraying and they did her injustice.
#FollowFriday (2016)
#sucked
This movie had neither the budget for actors or writing apperently, Black Mirror handles the themes significantly better. The main character acts like a cardboard box for half of her scenes. Her brother reads his lines like hes in 7th grade theater class. The killer looks like the guy who gave himself that lame mashup of puff daddy and oprah(which is a dated reference even for 2016. I understand if you dont have the budget for even b-c list actors but atleast put that money into the writing budget! Or even the props department. I so wish this movie could be rated 0.
