Farmer Wants A Wife (2023)
Reminds me of ...
The Littlest Hobo (season 3, episode 13, 1982): Mail Order Bride with Simon Oakland and Barbara Gordon. I do not have TV or cable, so I cannot watch current programming. The commercials for Farmer Wants A Wife I see on online movie sites remind me of this show. This episode is currently available online. I have always remembered the scene in which Barbara Gordon's character makes a picnic lunch for Simon Oakland's character with the little sandwiches. It would be interesting to compare the two shows. I wonder if the creators of Farmer Wants A Wife knew of this Mail Order Bride show and decided to make a new expanded version of it.
Tidal Wave: No Escape (1997)
Good enough to watch once.
This is another installment of a genre of movies in which the protagonist and eventual hero is falsely accused at first, usually by being set up. The movie Killer Wave is rather similar. These movies are good enough to watch, but usually have annoying parts to them. It all comes clean in the end, but the authorities that won't listen don't always get the karma they should.
The Dead Don't Care for Vengeance (2017)
Amazing potential!
This is a really good movie, especially considering it is a student film made from a college production club. The potential of the producers and the actors is just waiting to be discovered. 8/10 for some of the cinematographic effects in particular, but there are a couple too-noticeable cliches and a few details that could have been better addressed. It is good to watch more than once. There is amazing potential among the people involved in this movie.
Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010)
You have to take it in its context.
This story is panned for a number of reasons. But it has to be taken in its context, for adolescents from maybe 11 to 17 and even young adults who remember it from their childhood. It kept me interested enough to watch it all the way through the first time I saw it. I watch it again from time to time. 7/10 for its overall effect, especially in its context, but there are aspects of it that are annoying. On the other hand, it makes me think about the aboriginal people when the British colonized their land that became Australia.
Die Wolke (2006)
Not a movie you will soon forget.
I don't speak German, but after reading two Wikipedia articles' plot summaries of this title (one the book, the other the movie as The Cloud) and then watching the movie carefully, I was able to follow the story.
The first part of this movie is the nuclear accident. It moves steadily along. What stood out to me are the behavior of the brother, Uli, and the actions of the heroine, Hannah, both of which become annoying. They are in a gravely emergent situation for their lives. The brother may be too young to fully appreciate it; and I don't know if I could be pragmatic enough, even coldblooded, to just walk away when the heroine needs to. The heroine's actions are completely inane when she becomes contaminated. The outcomes of these characters' actions have to happen to make the story, but the setup for them could have been done differently.
The second part of the movie, when the heroine wakes up, is downright poignant and haunting. It is no longer about a nuclear accident. I still feel unsettled after watching the movie. I will watch it again (and again), at least the second part. I wish there was more to it, especially some of what is in the book that is not included in the movie. You may find that the second part pretty much makes you forget about the first part. 9/10 for the overall effect of the movie. There are aspects of it that could have been done better. Of course, understanding German to know the actual dialog may smooth out these things.
While there is not an English version of the movie, there is one of the book. The movie is different from the book in a number of ways, especially the second half of the story. The book has a much harsher presentation of it, and is even more unsettling. Especially coming out after Chernobyl, the book is regarded as a protest against nuclear energy.
