Chylka (2018)
Can't understand the " hater" reviews
I found the characters well written, true depictions of differing personality types and realistic. The criminal justice system creates a tough atmosphere where the subjects are tough, trust has to be earned and progress can be slow. I thought the main characters were very well acted. An excellent complex show.
No, it's not a simplistic plot, you have to engage with the plot to appreciate it fully.
It is difficult to watch someone, especially someone who seems they have everything, show self destructive behavior. But often this is part and parcel of dealing with pathological, criminal behavior. I sincerely enjoyed the writing.
Entebbe (2018)
I loved the dance
The juxtaposition of the dance scenes was perfect, Art representing human will. I'm not an artist but I found it moving. I thought the movie was good; unlike others with fight scenes, it kept one's interest all along, The characterizations were measured, not one over the top.
With history repeating itself, one can forget what bravery it takes to survive ideologies that put ordinary people in the crosshairs. Each incident melds into another until the individual horror of any particular situation somehow gets watered down in our consciousness. It is life affirming to realize there is a group of people who say "Never Again" and take action to mean it.
The Northman (2022)
Watch Vikings instead
Lots of noise. Very simplistic plot. I got the sense the actors gave it their best with poor material. If the characters were more relatable...what can I say, disappointing lack of plot.
Dýrið (2021)
I will never get this hour and 40 minutes back
This film requires so much suspension of belief that it doesn't say anything about the profound love parenthood can entail. Essentially it's bizarre and sad.
The Guilty (2021)
The acting is well worth watching
Gyllendal is terrific. He depicts a person trying to cope with complicated stressful life circumstances while managing a life or death crisis at work.
The only reason I'm giving it a 7 is because I thought the ending could have been better developed.
The Ottoman Lieutenant (2017)
Michiel Huisman can't save this film alone
This is basically a "Lifetime " movie. The scenery was beautiful, Michiel Huisman and Ben Kingsley were their usual great actors, but the storyline about the nurse was improbable at best, actually, pretty unbelievable. So, disappointing.
The Operative (2019)
Interesting and suspenseful
The acting was great, scenes of Tehran interesting. I found myself wanting more of the story at the end.
I don't understand the bad reviews either; I didn't find it hard to follow, and the story kept me engaged.
Remember Me (2014)
Acting was very good
Story was weak and nonsensical, even for a horror/supernatural theme. The actors saved it.
Werk ohne Autor (2018)
Well worth watching
This is a gem. A perfect handling of the period; a balance between heavy judgement and truth being it's own judgement; truth being all that is needed. I'm not expressing this as clearly as I would like to, but the film draws you in, makes you feel, let's you view what it might be like to be an "ordinary" person, trying to express your best in extraordinary times. I didn't even realize it's length, it was engrossing.
