Reviews
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
In my Humble opinion, The best film yet!
I thought that OOTP was the best film by far, many of the characterisations were excellent (Evanna Lynch, Helena Bonham Carter and Imelda Stauton stole every scene th were in).
I'm not gong into the plot since you all know it but it has changed in places (the order of events has slightly changed but it doesn't really affect anything so it doesn't really matter). Imelda Staunton was a standout in this film, she was just so....evil and annoying!!! But in a very good way. I thought that they made her a lot more evil and twisted then in the books.
My only real gripe with this film was the rushed beginning, otherwise this is a most excellent film.
TMNT (2007)
A LOT of fun!
I watched this at an advanced preview, I thought it was Brill. the voice acting was really well done (SMG and Chris Evans surpassed my expectations, they were pretty good). Standout performances were Patrick Stewart (as always), Mako and Zhang Ziyi.
It's got quite a few inside jokes (one suggesting that Splinter watches Gilmore Girls religiously cracked me up, as well as Donatello's 'new' job). Apart from the more subtle jokes, the humour was pretty hit and miss but the jokes weren't a major part of the film.
The animation was pretty good, not realistic to a FFAC thing but the style of animation used worked well. The fight scenes were surprisingly well done for a PG (SPOILERS!!!! My favourite fight scenes were the turtles Splinter, April and Casey versus the foot ninjas and Rapheal Versus Leonardo).
It was a blast to watch, I'd easily recommend it.
DOA: Dead or Alive (2006)
Unbelievably fun
DOA: Dead or alive is a very fun film, It isn't a direct adaption of the video game but certain outfits and fighting styles look very similar, so if you are looking for a die hard adaption of DOA turn back now.
DOA succeeds where other Video game adaptions failed because it doesn't take itself seriously, The film knows it's over the top and cheesy but it just revels in it and that makes the whole film a blast.
The fight scenes are pretty good, especially considering that most fights and stunts were done by the actors and actresses, well done for learning the styles decently in 3 months!
SPOILER!!!!! I'd say my favourite fights were Christie Vs Helena and Helena Vs the guards, both were graceful and exciting to watch (the Guard fight earned extra points for simulating a kill bill esquire fight well but without gore) END SPOILER!!!!!
I can't really think of much more to say apart from, turn off your brain and sit down and enjoy the movie, you'll have a blast!
Driving Lessons (2006)
Great Film
I watched this film on ITV and I enjoyed it a lot. It was very watchable and very funny. Julie Walters and Rupert Grint were perfect in their roles. Julie Walters gets a special mention since she creates a wonderful diverse interesting character to watch. Ben's character is kinda shy and Stoic but the changes he goes through are wonderfully acted out by Rupert Grint, I would definitely say he has a future in acting after Harry Potter.
Laura Linney is quite good in her role as Ben's over protective mother, the only thing they went wrong with is by making her too....Villain-y. Ben's father was also an interesting contrast to his mother, and in the end he is quite honourable too. The only character i wasn't keen on was Bryony, she was a bit plain and unnecessary i thought.
Overall this is a great comedy drama that is very easy to watch. one of my favourite films of the year easily.
Black Christmas (2006)
It won't win awards but great fun anyway.
There's been a lot of negativity about this film, I never saw the original but i did think this film looked interesting after watching the trailer.
Basically, this film is pure fun, it won't win any awards but it is enjoyable. It isn't scary but the over the top kills and gore make this film enjoyable to watch with friends.
The acting is pretty good and the film tries it's best to establish each character before the main bloodshed begins. I'd say my favourite characters were Melissa and Lauren, I like Melissa because of her loyalty and i liked Lauren because she had cracking lines.
One of the bad things about this film is the slightly repetitive kills, OKAY! we get you like eyeballs!!!!! but i won't go to much detail here. One of the things the film did well was making you grow somewhat attached to the characters (apart from Kelli, she was just bland).
Overall I'd say, go to this film if you like slasher films but don't go expecting a masterpiece. But for what it is, i thought it was a blast to watch, especially with a group of friends.
