The Royal Hotel (2023)
What's the point???
I didn't know much about this film, but I really didn't expect this.
For the entire hour and 30 minutes, I kept waiting for something significant to happen, but nothing did.
Why on earth would two girls go to the middle of the desert to work in a bar were bunch of people get drunk and do stupid things. That's the story in a nutshell, then they get to meet bunch of dudes who want to have a good time with them, but one of them gets violent, so one of the girls tries to stop him.
I can't understand why this film was made or what it was trying to say, truly pointless to me and a true waste of time and talent.
Greatest Days (2023)
Great Take That Tribute
As a huge Take That fan, I was very excited when I heard about this film, and when I finally saw it, it really cheered me up and took me back to the good old days, where everything was fun and innocent, back to the time when I heard TT songs, and it cheered me up and made me cry, and I never really forgot them and thank God they are still going strong. The story of the film follows five girls in London back in the 90s, who are huge fans of The Boys, a band that sings TT songs, and after they go to one of their concerts, the story shifts to the present day where each girl has gone her sperate way, and they are no longer in touch, until one of the girls wins a trip to see The Boys reunion concert, and decides to bring back the girls. There is a sad story along the way, and throughout TT greatest hits serve as the soundtrack for the film, including Pray, Patience, Relight my Fire, Babe, Million Love songs, and Shine. TT even make a cameo, which is super great. The story is about friendship and love, and how it never goes away, no matter how time goes by. The movie is a great musical, with great dance sequence and costumes, and I love the boy band that played TT, they are good.
The Passenger (2023)
Interesting and intriguing
A young man, Bradely whose first name is Randy but everyone thinks that Bradely is his first name, wakes up after a terrifying nightmare to go to the morning shift of a burger place, and over there the manager offers him a better job, since he's the only one there who actually gives a damn, then another guy there starts to bully him and forces him to eat a bid sandwich, only then another employee, Benson (Kyle Gallner) goes to his car and gets a shotgun and all hell breaks loose. Then the rest of the film these two guys go on a road trip with a fateful ending. I had no information about this film before seeing it, but I'm glad I did. The film is trying to address many issues that faces young people these days. First Randy who suffers from a childhood trauma that turned him into a withdrawn man, who is bullied and avoids making any conformations with anyone, then there is Benson, who is for some reason has so much rage inside and when he saw Randy being mistreated, he just snapped and decided to do something about it. The two lead actors Johnny Berchtold and Kyle Gallner
did a really good job, but I feel there was some things that were left unexplored, like why Benson turned out like that, and Randy's family was left out. But as a whole It was a decent film.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
Nice adventure at Never Land
Even though the story of the boy who refuses to grow up has been told in several movies over the years, the most entertaining and memorable one was Steven Spielberg's Hook with Robin Williams as Peter Pan, but it's definitely a fun story that you don't mind seeing again. In this latest version some changes have been made like adding girls to the Lost Boys, which is nice. The lead roles of Peter and Wendy are good choices and very promising, Jude Law as Hook was okay but felt he didn't get to shine as he should, the rest of the cast are also good. The music, the cinematography, the majestic views are all great, also adding a few songs was a nice touch. The human part was also moving, how a girl on the verge of being a young woman is afraid to grow up, while she embarks on a wild adventure with her two little brothers that makes her learn who she is, and how she befriends Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and their gang and they unite to defeat a ruthless captain who shares a troubled history with Peter. A decent remake which is entertaining and fun to watch.
Murder Mystery 2 (2023)
The Spitz in Paris
Sandler and Aniston are back as the Spitz to uncover a new mystery after their wealthy friend The Maharajah (Adeel Akhtar) is kidnapped at his own fancy wedding. Their search leads them to Paris where they have to find out which one of the suspects is the one behind the kidnapping. The film is entertaining but not like the first one, it has good cast, including Jodie Turner-Smith and Mark Strong, but the script is the weakest element here, sure it's an action comedy that's not meant to be deep or profound but still it could have been better. The rest is quite good, the action sequence including the car chase and the Eiffel tower are good, the stunning views from Hawaii and the lavish wedding scenes are impressive. Lastly the best thing is surely the cool chemistry between the two leads, but the comedy part is sort of flat, not that funny.
We Have a Ghost (2023)
Ernest, your friendly neighborhood ghost
From Christopher Landon, the man behind films such as Happy Death Day and Freaky, comes a funny and moving ghost story, with great cast and cool car chases as well. The story follows a family of four who moves into a new house, only to find out that it's haunted by the ghost of a guy (David Harbour) who wears a bowling shirt with the name Ernest on it. The first to come into contact with him, is the younger sensitive son, Kevin (played by Jahi Di'Allo Winston), who feels all alone and can't connect with his family, especially his father (Anthony Mackie). When Kevin sees Ernest, he bonds with him and makes it his mission to find out his story and help him cross over to the other side, but naturally it's not that simple, as the family find themselves targeted by the CIA (Tig Notaro and Steve Coulter), who want to capture Ernest and do experiments on him. Kevin teams up with the girl next door (Isabella Russo) in order to uncover the mystery behind Ernest and help him out. Even though there are so many ghost stories, this one does offer something fun and new, first of all seeing David Harbour playing a ghost (with unattractive hair cut) and not being able to say any words, is truly impressive. The rest of the cast does good job all around (too bad Jennifer Coolidge had such a short time on screen though). I especially loved a moving scene between Kevin and his father, where he becomes honest and tells him that he's proud of him. Also the visuals and soundtrack are also great. The films discusses many topics such as family, social media and the power of friendship (even with a ghost).
Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)
Very delightful and uplifting
I was quite surprised to see that this year has two films based on the classic story of a Christmas Carol, first the movie Spirited and now this lovely film. The two are also musicals as well, but the first is live action, while this one is animated. Even though the classic story has been done many times, this remake was very entertaining, the animation work is very remarkable, the musical numbers are very good and moving, and the voice actors are brilliant; Luke Evans did a marvelous job, he's of course no stranger to musicals, and the rest of the cast were very nice as well. The film has a lot of funny moments, besides the touching moments also. I loved it a lot and it's a great addition to the Christmas movie list.
