Smart House (1999)
better than usual Disney material
Hmmmm, why don't people seem to like this movie? I think it's one of the better made-for-Disney-Channel films in the last couple of years. After seeing how good Ryan Merriman was in Deep End, I was looking forward to Smart House and I wasn't disappointed. Hopefully, Ryan can do another Disney film in 2001.
The Brainiacs.com (2000)
This movie is only good because of Mike Angarano
Pretty standard Disney Channel material---I've seen better, I've seen worse. It's about a boy (Michael Angarano) who buys his dad's toy company with the help of the internet. The plot has been done 100 times before---overworked dad loves his kids but doesn't spend enough time with them. I honestly think Michael Angarano does far better in the USA show, "COVER ME". In this movie it seems as if he is just going through the motions.
Unhappily Ever After (1995)
not like Married with Children at all
This is a good comedy; I know most teenage males like it for Nikki Cox but personally I think she is shallow. The reason I like it is for Mr. Floppy's crazy comments and the comic talents of Justin Berfield. Unfortunately, Justin doesn't get much more than 5 minutes of screen time until the final season. Which is a shame; he's one of the more talented young actors in the business. Thank gawd Linwood Boomer recognises this and gives him ample screen time in MITM.
Tucker (2000)
this is like The Wonder Years with an "R" rating
I watched the first episode last night and I was nearly in tears from laughing so much. Eli Marienthal is a talented and likeable young actor, and could be the next Frankie Muniz if he gets the right roles. About the show---the numerous male adolescent sex jokes and penis jokes did not offend me one bit---this kind of humor is right up my alley. So please, please NBC, do not axe this show like you did with Freaks & Geeks.
Miracle in Lane 2 (2000)
Disney Channel has another winner
This was a really cute family film---it shows that the underdog CAN rise to the top and win the prize. Of course, it didn't hurt to have Frankie Muniz as the star; he is a likeable and talented young actor. No wonder "Malcolm in the Middle" is such a big hit.
Lassie (1997)
too bad Corey grew out of the role
I like this version of Lassie a lot since I'm half Canadian and its a Canadian production. The writing was really good and all the actors had the accents down cold. It was so cute when Corey Sevier got to kiss Natalie at the end of the series; you got the feeling he wanted to do that all along. I like watching Corey in Little Men on Pax TV also; he's a good actor.
The New Lassie (1989)
good version, but not as good as the 1997 version
I remember watching this version when it came on in syndication. At least it was in color, so you could see how beautiful the collie was. If my memory serves me correctly, I seem to recall Leonardo (he had to have been 12 or 13) guest starring as one of Will Nipper's friends.
Lassie (1954)
Tommy, we will miss you
This is my favorite version of Lassie as well. I watched all the re-runs on the Animal Planet channel until I had seen them all. Tommy Rettig was a talented young actor; it's a shame he passed away. It's too bad they don't make classic TV programs like this one anymore.
Cover Me: Based on the True Life of an FBI Family (2000)
USA network has a winner here
This show is great---I stumbled across it back in April and have been a loyal viewer since. It's not as complicated as "Law and Order" so when I need a Wednesday night show to relax in front of, it's Cover Me. I agree with the viewer from San Jose; Michael Angarano is fantastic in this show. He has a lot of confidence for someone so young. I remember him in the McDonalds commercial---he got a lot taller !! I hope USA keeps this quality show on for a while.
The Kid with X-ray Eyes (1999)
Justin rocks....the rest of the actors are so-so
If you are already a fan of Justin Berfield's comedy roles (Unhappily Ever After & Malcolm in Middle) then you will like this film. The plot is somewhat hokey, but Justin's way kewl comic timing keeps the movie rolling along. The scene where he was fixing the mac & cheese while dancing around his uncle's kitchen had me in stitches.
Malcolm in the Middle (2000)
The best comedy on television right now
To those of you who don't like MITM then my advice is---don't watch it !! Malcolm is my favorite comedy on TV right now and I have seen every episode. Frankie Muniz is an incredibly talented actor and he keeps the show rolling along from one week to the next. And thank goodness that Justin Berfield gets a decent role to play; he was woefully underused in "Unhappily Ever After". High fives must go to the FOX network for renewing this show for another season.
The Iron Giant (1999)
you are who you choose to be
What an incredible film. It is a travesty that it didn't do well at the box office. Hats off to the entire voice cast---especially Eli Marienthal. He made the character of Hogarth Hughes come to life. I was so moved by the display of friendship between Hogarth and the Giant that the ending brought a tear to my eye.
