The Slap (2015)
I was bored out of my wits
Yes, the cast is good, but the story is SO boring. In episode 1, you wait an hour for the climax of an adult slapping a misbehaving six- year old brat! I read this was a best selling book -- maybe in written form, it was more interesting -- but based on the first episode, the American mini series won't be. The other family drama: mother in law bringing 30 cooked dishes to a birthday party for 20 people, disrespecting the wife's hostessing; an angry artist and his breastfeeding-in-public wife, who hates the "I love the 1%" Range Rover salesman; babysitter in love with hubby and aggressively pursuing him. Oy.
Life as a House (2001)
I'm still crying...
Oh jeez, I started crying when George told his nurse he hadn't been touched by someone in years and I didn't stop. Chalk some of this up to PMS, but damn, it was a heart wrenching film and Kevin Kline was incredible. The young actor (Hayden) who plays his son was also wonderful. I thought the script was very well written, can't even think of any superfluous dialogue. See it!
Au revoir les enfants (1987)
One of those movies that is etched in your soul
It has been over 10 years since I saw this movie, and there is something unexplainable about it that I have carried with me for so long. I can count on my hands the number of movies about which I can say that. There is something incredible about the images I retained from the movie -- the sunswept fields amidst the horror of WWII, the little boy's innocence amidst the evil of the Nazis and their collaborators. This movie is a must see, it transcends being a subtitled French film, or another film about the holocaust.
To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
Purely entertaining and very funny
I think Patrick Swayze was incredible in this movie. For a male actor to make you believe he really is a female in mind and body is a large undertaking and he did this for the entire length of the movie. I was entertained from beginning to end, and I also saw Priscilla and liked this just as much. Robin Williams has a little cameo at the beginning that is hilarious, and Stockard Channing does a great job as a small town abused wife. Great movie to watch on a weekend afternoon when you just want to escape and laugh!
Est - Ouest (1999)
A cross cultural slice of dark history
I have wanted to see this movie for a long time, and I must say it was worth the wait. Many films that portray life under a communist regime are either way too dark, or try too hard to be light and funny in spite of the oppressive surroundings. Even though I have not lived under those conditions, I felt the quiet desperation and helplessness that has driven so many to risk everything for freedom. The acting was excellent. I agree with some of the above comments that Sacha's final fate was written off too easily and Alexei's complexity was not explored deeply enough, but we only had two hours to span 10 years and I think it was as good as can be overall. Watch it!
