King T 2
Reviews
Chapelwaite (2021)
Series with a strong start and a steep decline into boredom
I don't even know where to start. First of all, this Stephen King adaptation is one of the better Disney productions of recent years (which doesn't really mean much, but more on that in a moment). This time Disney refrained from focusing too much on political correctness, which is to the series' credit. Unfortunately, the series is only really good and exciting until around episode 4. After that, one hair-raising plot follows the next.
Example: The vampires move from Jerusalem's Lot to Chapelwaite during the day - two episodes later the daylight harms them - at the end a vampire sails out onto the ocean (it's daytime again) and his vampire daughter stands on the beach (also during the day). In one episode, the house is supposed to be defended. Instead of filling up the secret passage etc. No - it's repeated umpteen times: defend the shed (that's where the entrance to said secret passage is). These and other inconsistencies paired with heaps of boring dialog, which stretch out the episodes, make the last 5-6 episodes a challenge. I was glad after episode 10 that it was over (not meant positively).
As I said, it feels like the productions are getting a bit better again. Let's see how future productions turn out - a meaningful plot would be a good step in the right direction.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Shallow entertainment with wasted potential
The last voyage of the Demeter impresses with very good visual effects that capture the atmosphere of the time in which the movie is set. So why don't I think this movie is really outstanding? This is mainly due to the second half of the movie. The character Clemens was given the opportunity to tell a story of discrimination in a completely out-of-place manner, as is usual at the moment. After that, however, things got really abstruse. They agreed to sink the ship. When would you do that? At night when Dracula is active, of course, and not during the day when the sun is shining and he is sleeping. This abstruseness defines the entire plot of the last half hour of the movie.
The movie would have had a lot of potential if it hadn't become very exhausting at the end due to the mentioned points.
All in all, an average movie, quite watchable, but far from very good.
Lie to Me (2009)
Interesting setting - poorly implemented
What can I say, the first season of this series knows how to inspire. The way the main protagonist reads people's expressions is beautiful to watch. However, the series completely loses momentum from season 2 on. The reading of the facial expressions is just annoying, one would prefer to say: "Ok, his left nostril itches, he probably forgot his tax return". In addition, the character development gets completely bogged down. They keep going around in circles and you can already anticipate what will happen next.
Thus, a series that starts strong and then drops off massively. I can't recommend it.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 17: The Apostate (2023)
I hope they find the way again
Oh dear what happened?
I am a real fan of this series. Seasons 1 and 2 had a great story and bombastic visual effects. Not much of that is left in season 3.
The visual effects (except for the space battles) are on the level of 30 years ago. The pirates and the little technicians who are supposed to fix IG look like Muppet characters. Especially the captain of the pirates, here Disney has completely carried it away.
Then there is the story ... if you want to call it a story:
I took off my helmet -> OH no, you're not a Mandalorian anymore -> What can I do? -> Go to the waters on Mandalore -> Ok, everything there is destroyed and contaminated, I need (for whatever reason) help of an old battle droid -> Broken -> ok, I need a spare part -> I now fly somewhere (why exactly there - nobody knows) to apparently find such a spare part.
Really now?
Dear Disney team, the Marvel universe was in my eyes already driven to the wall, the main story of Star Wars already partially (EP 7+8+9), please spare the Mandalorian this fate.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Again a great Show with no ending
It is a bad habit how often it still happens nowadays that broadcasters simply cancel their series without a proper ending. The least the viewer can expect is that they at least try to bring some closure to the storylines within the last 2-3 episodes. Such a cancellation doesn't happen from yesterday to today. I would have nothing against a separate final episode in overlength.
About the series itself: It is an excellent series with a great soundscape and very good visual effects (not bombastic but on a very good level). The characters are constantly evolving, so it never gets boring. At the end of the second season, the plot easily had potential for another 2-3 seasons.
Thus, I mourn a great series that Warner did not even grant a reasonable conclusion. A shame.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Exciting, captivating and great visual effect
A great series that Amazon has created here. In my eyes, it far outshines comparable "competitor productions". The visual effects alone are truly groundbreaking. The story is also captivating and the viewer always knows exactly where he is thanks to clever map insertions (a major deficiency in, for example, the Witcher). Who has already seen the films has of course a certain knowledge advantage and can already relate more to the people and places shown. My wife has not yet seen the films, but is also enthusiastic. Thus, the series is also suitable for non-insiders.
For me, the best series of the year.
The Batman (2022)
Half the time would have been enough
The story that is told here could have been told in half the time instead of 3h. The film and its plot are correspondingly lengthy. This leaves us with a Batman that doesn't even come close to the Tim Burton or Christopher Nolan films.
Marvel Studios: Legends (2021)
Disney's consolidation attempt for phase four
Marvel Legends always offers viewers a brief summary of various characters per episode. This is good because the majority of people probably don't know where Disney/Marvel is going with their MCU Phase 4. At the end of each episode, there is a reference to what you should watch to find out what happens next.
I myself find the content of MCU Phase 4 so far plan- and aimless. It seems to me that Disney's focus is primarily on politically correct representation of current issues, less on the entertainment of the viewer.
So if you want to get into MCU Phase 4, you should watch Marvel Legens to get started, everyone else should wait until Phase 5, which will hopefully offer more entertainment again.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Best Film of the Year
I love this movie. In my eyes the best DC movie produced the last years. Black humor paired with strong characters. The actors all deliver a top performance. My favorites are of course the rat and the shark :)
Absolute recommendation!
9-1-1: Lone Star (2020)
Light Entertainment
I hardly know of a series that has packed more diversity and gender equality themes into it than this one. The creators still manage not to use these topics as a primary hook (I am currently in the second season). This and the fact that the series doesn't take itself too seriously is a good thing, because it offers the viewer wonderful entertainment.
You shouldn't expect any profound storylines or character developments, but it's good for relaxing after work.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Start telling good stories again and stop beeing so political!
The series should be called Who Will Be the Next Captain America. This fully describes the plot. The plot is further embellished with refugee issues and political platitudes that pay tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement. This would be fine within a certain scope. But the last two episodes are based almost exclusively on this. Thus, a series that wants to entertain less, instead strongly politicizes. My personal conclusion: The weak overall plot and the strong focus on political opinion making do not make this series enjoyable.
Wir sind die Welle (2019)
What a crap
Rarely seen such a bad series. The actors were obviously recruited from the first class of acting school. The story has the circumference of a shoe heel.
Unless you are an enthusiastic leftist freak, you certainly can't enjoy this gruesome piece of work.
Outside the Wire (2021)
Terrible Movie
The basic plot fits on a beer mat -> Evil terrorists plans to launch nuclear missiles!
The acting performance corresponds to the plot, it seems listless to grotesque in parts.
The only good thing about this movie are the special effects.
Netflix should invest its money more wisely, every cent spent on this movie was wasted.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 11: The Heiress (2020)
Great but very short episode
What makes this episode so good? It is the possibilities it opens up. So now there are a variety of new storylines such as
- The Panet Mandalore, how was it destroyed (potential for an entire film). Can it be retaken and rebuilt?
- What is the conflict between moderate Mandalorians and the so-called "fanatics".
- Why does Bo-Katan Krye want the Dark Saber? What do she know about this weapon?
- Will there be a conflict over the rule of Mandalore in the event of a reconquest or reconstruction?
However, there were also some really disappointing points:
- The length of the episode. 35 minutes including opening and closing credits. Come on Disney, filling 45 minutes with a plot should be possible with the Disney + draft horse.
- The Stormtroopers seem like cheap extras. Well, they are not elite soldiers, but I would have expected a little more resistance (especially Mandalorians are not Jedi).
The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (2020)
Fun to watch episode with a side story
A good episode that is set off the main storyline. It is also important not only to advance the main story, but to give the audience a great overall experience.
The only problem is the relationship between action and plot. This episode and the previous episode had a strong focus on the action rather than the plot. I just hope that the producers don't fall into the scheme of bigger and more action without meaningful plot in the style of episode 7-9.
Evil (2019)
Pretty boring Show
The acting is all right, even if the childen are screaming in almost every scene. But the story ... just old wine in new bottles. We had already Outcast, The Exorcist and so on. All of the before named shows where better than this. Furthermore the few "special" effects where demons appear are really B-Movie niveau.
My conclusion: Nothing special, nothing new, i am very dissapointet. Don´t know how this show got an average of 7,6.
Colony (2016)
Great Series with NO ending
I loved this series. But is has no ending. They cancelled this series without giving it a good or even passable ending. Therefore i cannot recommend this series at all.
The Witcher (2019)
It´s ok
To be honest I never played the games etc.
So I am open minded by the story. This is the main problem for me. The viewer is overwhelmed with terms that are never explained at the beginning. This makes identification with this world very difficult. In contrast, Game of Thrones has an intro in which the world and the connections are made accessible to the viewer right from the start and thus involve him.
Otherwise a solidly made series which still has potential at the top.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Thats what Star Wars should be!
I love this show. After the disappointing episodes VII - VIII - they only consist of special effects and meaningless Characters - FINALLY once again Characters, villains and a story! that deserves the name of Star Wars.
