Pecker (1998)
A good, small film
This is a funny, anti-art, absurdist spoof. The independent, "small" feel of the film, gives it a modest, refreshing appeal and a welcome break the Hollywood formula. The characters, caricatures really, are all odd-balls in an everyday sort of way. I found the little Chrissy gag a bit tiresome. Overall, however, I enjoyed the film and recommend it to those you enjoy off-beat cinema.
Jeux interdits (1952)
What Hollywood Cannot Do
This is very nearly a perfect film. There have been many films about children, but few are strong enough to allow for innocence and honesty to co-exist. Jeux Interdits (Forbidden Games) makes no such compromises. Hollywood would have traded a happy (and phony) ending for poignancy. Beautiful cinematography.
American Buffalo (1996)
Disappointing
Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Franz turn in fine performances and those looking for them to strut their stuff will find some of that stuff in this film, but Hoffman has explored this terrain more effectively and memorably elsewhere. The character Bobby is never fully integrated into the film, and is not well acted. The cinematography is occasionally superb and one has the sense that there is a very good film lurking here somewhere -- but where? I never found it.
Gone with the Wind (1939)
Most over-rated film in history
I finally got around to seeing this film in 1995 after putting it off for years. I assumed I would find it an overblown melodrama, and that it is, but it is far worse than I had expected.
This is a racist film. I do not use that term lightly. I found it offensive, banal, and grossly over-rated.
