This article contains Wandavision Episode 3 spoilers, and potential spoilers for future episodes, the wider MCU, and Marvel Comics. We have a spoiler free review here.
WandaVision episode 3 is the first full color episode of the series, and moves the setting from the black-and-white 1960s of the previous episodes to a vibrant Brady Bunch-esque Technicolor of the early 1970s. There’s lots of fun weirdness to find between the lines, both from a Marvel and MCU Easter eggs standpoint and callouts to classic sitcoms of its era.
Let’s get to work…
Sitcom Inspiration
Let’s start with the big one…
The Brady Bunch
This episode borrows almost the entirety of its aesthetic from all-time classic sitcom The Brady Bunch. Wanda and Vis’s house strongly resembles Mike and Carol Brady’s humble ranch home inside and out. The gorgeous wide wooden staircase in particular is a real tell – as is...

Exclusive: ABC has given a script commitment with penalty to The Turners, a half-hour single-camera autobiographical family doctors comedy from writer Naomi Ekperigin (Mrs. Fletcher), Wilmer Valderrama and his Wv Entertainment, Damon Wayans Jr. and his Two Shakes Entertainment and CBS Television Studios where both Valderrama and Wayans are under deals.
Written by Ekperigin, in The Turners, a close-knit family of black doctors faces major changes when the recently retired parents decide to get back into the workforce. Now, three siblings at the height of their success are forced to work alongside their parents, and assert their independence everywhere from the emergency room to the living room.
The project is based on the real life of the Turner Family, a family in Houston, Texas whose family photo went viral in 2019. Dr. Rod J. Turner has his own Ob/Gyn practice, Health Solutions of Clear Lake, where his wife Roslyn works alongside...

The CW is working on a new take on “Good Christian Bitches,” seven years after ABC’s short-lived adaption titled “Gcb.” A new drama series based on Kim Gatlin’s 2008 book is in the works at the network — and it’s set in a high school, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
Jordon Nardino — creator of The CW’s “Glamorous” pilot, which was not ordered to series — will write and executive produce the show, which is a retooling of the “Good Christian Bitches” reboot that was in development at The CW last season, that one from writer Leila Cohan-Miccio. Darren Star and Aaron Kaplan, who produced the ABC series, are also back on board to executive produce.
Here’s the description for the new reboot: At a prestigious private Christian high school in Dallas, a war stoking the student body’s social divides erupts when the new girl on campus,...

Last week, a new radio station went on the air in Nashville with a premise that’s at once wildly radical and painfully obvious.
Instead of imagining country radio as an episode of The Bachelorette — 25 guys, one woman — set on a gated island, Wycz envisions the format as something far more flexible and receptive. The station is willing to play women: Kacey Musgraves twice in an hour, while she can’t buy airtime elsewhere. And Wycz is happy to exist in open dialog with other musical formats, cheerfully playing R&b and rap,...

Jane the Virgin fans were dealt a huge blow last week when The CW officially passed on Jane the Novella, a prospective spinoff of the soon-to-conclude dramedy.
The series was to be an anthology, with each season based on Jane the Virgin's titular character's novel series, with Gina Rodriguez attached to narrate.
But CW boss Mark Pedowitz has now opened up about the decision to not go forward with the series.
“We are big fans of Jennie Urman and Gina and we had great appreciation of what they did," he said during a conference call ahead of the network's upfronts presentation.

"In this particular situation, this spin-off didn’t quite get to where we wanted to get to. We have reached out to Jennie and if she wishes we are very interested in pursuing a potential another spinoff for Jennie.

Three of the four CW pilots that stood out this pilot season, Batwoman, Katy Keene, Nancy Drew and Glamorous, were picked up to series last week. The fourth, Glamorous, the only original concept and only comedy in the bunch, remains in contention.
“We are still looking at Glamorous,” the CW President Mark Pedowitz said during the network’s upfront call Thursday morning. “It is very, very funny. We will take a harder look at it when we go back to Los Angeles.”
Glamorous, which hails from Damon Wayans Jr. and his Two Shakes Entertainment, writer Jordon Nardino and CBS TV Studios, centers on a gender-nonconforming recent high school graduate (Ben J. Pierce) who lands the gig of a lifetime interning at a cosmetics company whose products he panned on YouTube.
“We believe Ben J. Pierce is a star,” Pedowitz said. “It needs some retooling so we can try to move forward with it.

The CW loves its big franchises, and has found a way to pair them almost too neatly in the fall. Back-to-back nightly lineups include comic-book shows with comic-book shows, remakes with remakes, teens with teens, and families with families.
It makes a lot of sense from a scheduling flow perspective — which makes it ironic that much of the CW’s viewership doesn’t come in a traditional, linear fashion. CW president Mark Pedowitz points out that the network considers itself “the original multiplatform network,” having relied on digital distribution in addition to the regular broadcast run for years.
But that means linear remains important as a launch pad for the shows, Pedowitz said.
As the CW grows its footprint, the network will air 12 hours of original scripted content in the fall — far more than Fox’s seven hours.

The major TV studios have all but closed out their business with the broadcast networks for the 2019-2020 season.
In all, 35 new series have been ordered across the Big 4 and The CW, with one or two projects still outstanding as potential contenders for midseason pickups. The union of Disney’s ABC Studios and the 20th Century Fox TV operation in March made Disney Television Studios the largest supplier of new broadcast TV series with a total of 14 new series orders, although the studios operated separately until the merger was formally completed on March 20.
With the buying mostly done, here is a breakdown of where Hollywood’s dominant TV suppliers stand at the Big Four and CW at the close of the 2019 development season. Should any late pick ups be made, this post will be updated.

With nearly all series orders, cancellations, and renewals complete, the 2019-2020 season is taking shape.
Despite the fact that this year’s new series order volume held up surprisingly well compared to last year, it was still a year of transitions and upheaval at the broadcast networks. From significant executive moves to Fox making its presence felt in the post-Disney merger world, here are some of the most notable issues for this upfronts season.
Meet the New Fox
Following the completion of the 21st Century Fox-Disney merger, questions abounded about what the the now standalone Fox Corp.’s broadcast network arm (Fox Entertainment) was going to look like going forward. The company had already made it clear they would be focusing on live events, like the NFL and WWE’s “SmackDown Live,” with less of an emphasis on scripted content. Yet Fox still came out for its first post-merger upfronts season swinging.

ABC threw a curveball this year by heading into the pre-upfront weekend with only two new series pickups, Untitled Cobie Smulders (fka Stumptown) drama and Black-ish spinoff Mixed-ish. Because many of you have questions and a heightened level of anxiety, here is a special, upfronts-eve edition of Deadline’s Pilot buzz list.
It wouldn’t be an upfront season without a twist or two. One of the biggest ones this year may be brewing at ABC as I hear the network is eyeing NBC’s drama pilot Emergence, which is produced by ABC Studios. With two buzzy pilots — NYPD Blue and Heart of Life — out of fall contention for some tweaking , ABC appears to still be high on the Hank Steinberg/50 Cent legal drama, with a major dark horse emerging in romantic one-hour The Baker and the Beauty. As we reported on Friday, ABC was expected to pick up...

After a landmark year for female pilot directors in 2018, the 2019 season has seen further movement in representation for women behind the camera
With execs at the major broadcasters making decisions on the fate of pilots at this very moment, it’s worth noting that of the 63 pilots ordered this season across the five major broadcast networks, 25 were directed by women , or 40%.
Compare that with last 2018’s figure of 24 female-directed pilots out of 75, or 32%, and it appears that progress is continuing to be made, especially when put in context with the 2017 season which had only 9% female directors across its pilots.
The question still remains, will the progress instigated by the Time’s Up and Me Too movement and the push for female representation ever translate into full parity behind the camera on broadcast TV?
Despite two notable breakthroughs in Jade Wong and Jessica Yu, who are two of the first Asian-American...

The CW just picked up three of its six pilots to series, Batwoman, Katy Keene and Nancy Drew. Here is the status of the three that were left off, Glamorous, The Lost Boys and Jane the Novela.
Glamorous remains in contention, with a pickup decision will come soon, possibly before the CW’s May 16 upfront presentation; The Lost Boys will be retooled and re-piloted off-cycle; while the Jane the Virgin offshoot Jane the Novela is not going forward.
Glamourous, which hails from Damon Wayans Jr. and his Two Shakes Entertainment, writer Jordon Nardino and CBS TV Studios, had been considered a leading contender alongside Batwoman, Katy Keene and Nancy Drew and was the only original concept in the bunch.
Written by Nardino, Glamorous centers on a gender-nonconforming recent high school graduate (Ben J. Pierce) who lands the gig of a lifetime interning at a cosmetics company whose products he panned on YouTube.

The pilot for the series adaptation of “The Lost Boys” will be re-shot off cycle. “Glamorous,” about a gender non-conforming high school student, may still be in contention.

Jane the Virgin may be wrapping up its story in a neat little bow by the end of the year, but at least there's a spinoff in the works.
Thankfully, a familiar face from the regular series is attached to co-star on the potential new series titled Jane the Novella.
Deadline has revealed that Ivonne Coll, who plays Jane's grandma, Alba, on the soapy CW drama will take on the role of a brand new character on the spinoff.
Her character will be called Camila, the adoptive mother of Estela, the character the new show will revolve around for its first season if it gets a series order.

As previously reported, the new series will be an anthology with each season being based on a different fictional novel written by Jane Villanueva aka the lead character of Jane the Virgin.

The latest entry in the terminal-illness teen romance canon — shockingly, not based on a Ya novel, although the screenplay became the basis for a novelization — “Five Feet Apart” is like a new strand of the same formulaic disease, only this time featuring a set of specific symptoms that make physical contact between the sick lovers literally fatal. (Call it “The Fault in Our Lungs.”)
Within this sub-genre of doomed adolescent relationships, “Five Feet Apart” is more John Green-generic than “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”-clever. What “Five Feet Apart” — the directorial debut of “Jane the Virgin” actor Justin Baldoni, from a screenplay by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis — has going for it is how it uses the mechanics of the condition at its center as the basis for the plot, which saves it from being a copy-paste refurbishing of other, similar entries.

The number of broadcast drama pilots dropped this year to what may be an all-time low of 35, down from 41 in 2018. Despite the overall double-digit volume decline, Vancouver made big year-to-year gains with 10 drama pilots, up from 6 last year. That is believed to be an all-time record for the coastal Canadian city and is the most of any city this pilot season. For comparison, in 2014, when there was a similar low number of broadcast drama pilots, 36, Vancouver housed 5 of them.
In total, almost a third of the broadcast drama pilots this year, 11, are headed to Canada, boosted at least in part by an advantageous exchange rate, which may raise again the issue of runaway production. Meanwhile, Los Angeles, which had been regaining ground after the all-time low tally of 5 broadcast drama pilots in 2014 with the help of a tax incentives program that includes pilots, dropped from 8 hourlong...

Female directors broke new ground this pilot season. Jude Weng has been tapped to direct ABC’s untitled single-camera comedy pilot from writer Jessica Gao. The Taiwanese-born is believed to be the first Asian-American woman ever and the first woman of color in nearly 30 years to direct a half-hour broadcast network pilot, since Debbie Allen helmed the pilot for NBC’s The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air in 1990.
Meanwhile, Jessica Yu is set to direct NBC’s drama pilot Bluff City Law. She is believed to be the first Asian-American woman directing a broadcast drama pilot.
Weng, an alumna of the AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women, the ABC-Disney Directing Fellowship and the Warner Bros. Directing Program, and Yu are among 21 female pilot directors this year, 13 on the drama side and eight in comedy, up from 20 last year. A significant portion of them are first-time pilot helmers, like Weng and Yu.
