[This story contains spoilers from season seven, episode five of 9-1-1, “You Don’t Know Me.”]
A couple of months ago, 9-1-1 co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear reached out to actor Lou Ferrigno Jr. — who had guest-starred in three flashback episodes of the second season — about reprising his role as firefighter Tommy Kinard in the seventh season of the hit Fox-turned-abc first-responder drama.
Ferrigno Jr., who says he had nothing but fond memories of working with the writer and producer years ago, was instantly intrigued to learn that Minear was in the early stages of writing a multi-episode arc that would allow viewers to check back in with Tommy in the present. That storyline, as it turns out, would involve Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark), the ostensibly straight character who would navigate his newfound attraction to Tommy in the landmark 100th episode, which aired last Thursday.

There’s always been a place for weirdness in the young adult TV sphere. From the original Roswell to recent hits like School Spirits or the tragically short-lived Astrid and Lilly Save the World, the genre has never been afraid to take big swings. Heck, prior to its rebranding, The CW’s entire ethos could basically be summed up as “super weird teen dramas” like Riverdale and Stargirl. When done right, YA shows that embrace chaos and don't take themselves too seriously can be great — or, at the very least, highly entertaining.

Watch out, Ken Jeong: Your “Community” co-star Joel McHale is coming for your “Kensday” crown. Through a series of fill-in gigs, McHale — who also stars on Fox’s sitcom “Animal Control” — will be all over Fox’s Wednesday night lineup in the coming weeks.
That’s because McHale is set to fill in for Jeong as guest host of the network’s musical gamer “I Can See Your Voice” on both Wednesday, Feb. 14 and Wednesday, Feb. 21. Then, on Wednesday, Feb. 28, McHale is back — but as guest host on “We Are Family,” filling in for regular host Anthony Anderson. (McHale will host the special two-hour season finale of “We Are Family” in its entirety.)
All of that leads to the Season 2 premiere of “Animal Control” on Wednesday, March 6, on Fox. The network is definitely invested in McHale: On Tuesday, Fox revealed that it had already picked up a Season 3 of “Animal Control.

Sarah Michelle Gellar made her return to horror in the series.
TV Line reports, “Last summer’s dual Hollywood strikes were the final nail in Wolf Pack‘s coffin. According to sources, a potential second season would not have been ready for nearly two years after the conclusion of Season 1.”
“Wolf Pack,” written and produced by Jeff Davis, follows a teenage boy and girl whose lives are changed forever when a California wildfire awakens a terrifying supernatural creature and drives it to attack a highway traffic jam beneath the burning hills.
Wounded in the chaos, the boy and girl are inexplicably drawn to each other and to two other teenagers who were adopted sixteen years earlier by a park ranger after another mysterious wildfire.

What was once touted as a brave, new era of streaming is starting to feel ... a little stale and familiar these days. Hot on the heels of Paramount's bizarre choice to rebrand the prestige cable network Showtime as Paramount+ with Showtime, likely made in a sweaty attempt to goose subscription numbers for a fledgling streaming service, yet another questionable decision from a major studio has come down from the highest levels. And this time, it involves sending brand-name DC movies to another streaming service.
According to a new report by Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox-owned Tubi have reached an agreement to send several DC movies and shows to the ad-supported streaming service for the new year. This means that major titles such as "The Batman," both "Wonder Woman" movies, "Aquaman," "Black Adam," "Birds of Prey," and even 2011's "Green Lantern" will join series like "Batwoman," "Gotham," and "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman...

Yes, it has been suggested that the Arrowverse first took flight with Arrow‘s own October 2012 premiere. But truly, it was 14 months later, on Dec. 4, 2013 — when Barry Allen aka the would-be Flash first set foot in Starling City — that TV’s expanded DC universe started to take shape.
This is where I remind you that when The CW gave a series about Green Arrow a green light, the notion of eventually introducing other standalone hero series was but a gleam in anybody’s eye.

Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart reunited for a festive commercial.
The Just Friends stars filmed an ad for Reynolds’ Aviation Gin in a green screen room, designed to look like a home decorated for Christmas.
The two-minute spot sees the actors seemingly reprise their roles of Chris Brander and Jamie Palamino from the 2005 rom-com about a man who makes it out of the friendzone 10 years after confessing his love for his best friend.
“Oh, hey, honey, I was just looking at the tree. Nothing like the smell of real pine,” Reynolds tells his onscreen wife at the start of the commercial. “Oh, I love our pine tree,” she replies. “How was work?” he asks her. “Mm, I’ve had better days. The bar ran out of Aviation American Gin,” she says while holding a bottle of Reynolds’ gin. “Oh no, that’s so bad. That’s terrible. They ran out of Aviation American Gin,...

Tyler Hoechlin in ‘Superman & Lois’
The CW’s confirmed that Superman & Lois starring Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Grimm) will wrap up with the upcoming fourth season. The superhero action series was the last remaining holdout from The CW’s old comic-book-inspired primetime lineup that included Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Supergirl, Batwoman, Stargirl, and Gotham Knights.
Season four will consist of just 10 episodes and is expected to air in 2024.
“While we’re sad to say goodbye to Superman & Lois at the end of Season Four, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, vfx teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers. Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created—on and off screen,” stated executive producers and co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher.”

All good things must end, and that axiom rings especially true for the quirky, fan-favorite Max original series Doom Patrol. The show releases the second half of its fourth and final season this October, with six brand-new episodes after a nine-month mid-season hiatus that began this past January. Adapting the DC Comics’ superhero team of the same name created by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani, Doom Patrol has leaned into the most absurd possibilities of the genre, combined with the heartbreak that comes with being transformed into a misfit hero through horrifically weird science.
However, more than just examining the peculiarities of being a superhero, Doom Patrol has the bizarre distinction of being a program caught between shuffling streaming platforms, confusing shared universe connections, all while trying to tell its own story across four seasons. And frankly, for a team as unorthodox and weird as the Doom Patrol is,...

If your favorite movie was pulled as part of Disney+’s cost-saving measures earlier this year, there’s a good chance you can find it on platforms like Prime Video now.
The handbook for turning streaming losses into profits is fairly short. It really only has three main steps: launch an ad-supported tier, raise prices on ad-free customers, and remove titles from streaming platforms that no longer drive sufficient engagement. Disney can check all three items off their list this year; the company is preparing to execute another round of price increases on Thursday, Oct. 12, and has cut big swaths of content from Disney+ and Hulu alike.
Some films cut from Disney+ are now available to rent or buy for as little as $3.99. Era of deepest cuts on Disney+ is likely over. Movies are available on platforms like Prime Video, iTunes and more.

Disney started pulling content from its direct-to-consumer streaming platform Disney+ earlier this year, following the streaming content bubble bursting spectacularly. Now some of it is beginning to reappear – on paid platforms.
Seasons of shows were unceremoniously zapped from the app, along with several high profile made-for-Disney+ movies, including “Crater,” which was erased a little more than a month after debuting on the platform. Those movies are back – and available to rent or buy on the PVOD platform of your choice
Disney didn’t publicize this; they just showed up with as little fanfare as when they were removed in the first place.
The removed titles now available to rent (for around $4) or buy (for $20) are “Artemis Fowl,” “Better Nate Than Never,” “Crater,” “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “Flora & Ulysses,” “Stargirl,” “Hollywood Stargirl,” “The One and Only Ivan,” “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made” and documentary “Wolfgang.” Disney+ original films that have...

It has been a full 20 years since Oscar-winner Kevin Costner directed a movie but he is finally back for his first turn behind the camera since 2003's "Open Range." Not only that, but Costner decided to go ahead and tackle an ambitious two-part cinematic event that will arrive in theaters next summer in the form of "Horizon: An American Saga." Chapter 1 is due to arrive in June of next year, followed by Chapter 2 in August, making for a pretty interesting experiment on the part of Warner Bros.
Now, we have our first glimpse at the experiment with a brief teaser trailer. For those who have enjoyed Costner's work in recent years on the hit TV series "Yellowstone," this is likely to serve as a treat as he's on horseback in an old-school Western shooting his rifle and rocking one heck of a mustache. This looks like the dad movie event of the decade.

Tom Brady is getting the biopic treatment.
The Gotham Group is developing a scripted limited series titled “The Patriot Way” about the quarterback, following his rise from a sixth-round NFL draft pick to the global superstar who led the New England Patriots to nine Super Bowls, winning six. It will also cover the Aaron Hernandez, “Spygate” and “Deflategate” controversies as well as Brady’s conflicts with head coach Bill Belichick.
Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson are attached to write the “The Patriot Way,” which will be adapted from “12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady’s Fight for Redemption,” the 2018 book by sports journalists Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge.
Ellen Goldsmith-Vein will produce the series on behalf of the Gotham Group.
Tamasy and Johnson are best known for writing, along with Scott Silver, “The Fighter,” the 2018 biopic directed by David O. Russel that starred Mark Wahlberg as boxer Micky Ward.

Blood and penises. Penises and blood. No, this isn’t a very bad advertisement for erectile dysfunction pills, or history’s tersest anatomy lesson; they’re two recurring elements from “The Boys,” Amazon Prime Video’s satiric superhero show that’s absolutely infatuated with red bodily fluid and unboxing a record number of dicks. (Some may even call them the series’ visual motifs.) Developed by Eric Kripke, the Emmy-nominated action-comedy — about a group of corporatized superheroes whose heroic public image hides dark secrets galore — makes its bloody mark in the first scene and fills subsequent scenes, episodes, and seasons with a growing number of (growing) dongs.
Along the way, it also happens to go hard against capitalism, right-wing extremism, and toxic masculinity. “The Boys,” never a one-note joke, creates satire that can be mercilessly blunt and surprising in its resonance. All that blood helps audiences see superheroes in a new...

Lifetime isn't Lifetime without V.C. Andrews's book-to-screen adaptations!
And we know you're excited about the four-part Cutler Saga, kicking things off with the first in the series, Dawn.
We can already tell you it's pure campy fun, and the cast is no joke.
We had the opportunity to sit in on a presser with the cast of Dawn, with a special appearance by V.C. Andrews' ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman.
It was all copacetic as everyone discussed how they got into character, gushed over star Brec Bassinger's performance and work ethic, and expressed all the fun they had filming this piece.
Fortunately, TV Fanatic got the opportunity to jump on Zoom with star, Bassinger, to discuss what it was like to play the film's titular role as we follow her through her journey from adolescence through adulthood.

Donna Mills’ most famous TV part is undoubtedly the manipulative Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing Sumner, whom she deliciously played for nine seasons (1980-89) on CBS’s primetime soap Knots Landing. But the actress says that even Abby might run and hide from powerful hotel owner Lillian Cutler in Lifetime’s limited series V.C. Andrews’ Dawn, premiering Saturday, July 8. “People say to me, ‘You’re used to playing the bad girl because you played Abby.’ And I say, ‘Lillian is way badder!’” In the premiere, Lillian’s nastiness is unleashed on innocent teen Dawn Longchamp, who learns that she’s really the presumed-dead Eugenia Cutler, and the humble “parents” she grew up with (played by Jesse Metcalfe and Helena Marie) abducted her as a baby. Being a minor, Dawn has no choice but to be separated from her loving brother, Jimmy (Khobe Clarke), and move in with grandmother Lillian, who quickly...

Exclusive: The Gotham Group has secured the motion picture and television rights to two YA novels.
Their Vicious Games, a YA novel from debut author Joelle Wellington, focuses on a teen desperate to regain her Ivy League acceptance. She enters an elite competition only to discover the stakes aren’t just high, they’re deadly. The novel publishes July 25 from Simon & Schuster.
Quressa Robinson of Folio Literary Management, while at Nelson Literary Agency, sold North American rights at auction in a major six-figure deal.
That Night in the Library, from author Eva Jurczyk, centers around seven students who sneak into the basement of a rare books library on the eve of graduation to carry out a ritual borrowed from the ancient Greeks that will free them from fear. Within the first half-hour of the Lifetime limited series V.C. Andrews’ Dawn — premiering Saturday, July 8 at 8/7c — we learn that the titular teen’s parents kidnapped her as a baby, she’s a member of the ruthless and wealthy Cutler family, her high school crush is really her biological brother, and the boy raised as her sibling is her new love interest.
It’s the kind of twisted drama one would expect from the author who also gave us Flowers in the Attic, another salacious tale about an affluent household that won’t let familial relations get in the way of love.

As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.
2020 and 2022 champ “Succession” is in the hunt for its third win in this category and will potentially only have to fend off two of its seven rivals from last year. “Better Call Saul” and “Yellowjackets” returned in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, while “Euphoria,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” and “Stranger Things” did not. The last remaining 2022 contender, “Ozark,” officially finished its four-season run last April. Also back in the running are former winners “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017) and “The Crown” (2021).

After Disney unceremoniously removed dozens of titles from Disney+ and Hulu at the end of May, the company on Friday recorded via an SEC filing a “$1.5 billion impairment charge in its fiscal third quarter financial statements to adjust the carrying value of these content assets to fair value.”
And that might not be the end of it – according to the same filing the company could incur charges up to $400 million “related to produced content.”
To explain: On May 26, Disney removed dozens of titles from direct-to-consumer streaming platforms Disney+ (including movies like “Stargirl” and “Wolfgang” and original series like “Willow” and “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers”) and Hulu. It was a baffling move given how closely connected many of the series and movies were to already-established Disney IP, making them an odd fit to shop to other streamers or linear platforms. And it was a move that blindsided a lot of...

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe was busy changing the way Hollywood studios approach their biggest franchises (and all which that implies), The CW and DC were off making TV history with the Arrowverse. Much like the House of Ideas' multimedia superhero property, the Arrowverse was all over the place in terms of its quality and success. Certain killjoys would tell you its flagship series went on for way too long, while others would blame its limited resources and financing for preventing it from truly doing justice to the epic comic book arcs it adapted.
Overall, though, the Arrowverse was a daring experiment in the best way. That's why we're hitting the pause button and reflecting on its legacy before DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran usher in their shiny-new unified vision for all things DC-related.
