True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he’s not creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show. He has made his lack of involvement with the new season very clear on social media, where he even went so far as to refer to one element of the new episodes as “stupid”. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season. To find out what Lopez thought of Pizzolatto’s comments, Vulture reached out to her – and did get a response.

Paramount Global’s streaming service Paramount+ is removing some international original content across its markets and will not debut some planned programming sourced outside the U.S. as part of the entertainment giant’s goal of “managing costs” and “maximizing content with the biggest impact,” including a focus on big U.S. studio franchises and a reduction in local, international originals.
On Wednesday, Paramount+ in foreign markets started removing such international original fare as the film At Midnight, starring Top Gun: Maverick breakout Monica Barbaro, Brazilian series Marcelo, Marmelo, Martelo, and U.K. drama No Escape.
In addition, some international content previously set to debut on the streamer across markets will not launch on it, including German thriller series Turmschatten, Italian series Miss Fallaci, which tells “the true story of one of the most controversial Italian and international journalism icons,” Oriana Fallaci and

The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.
True Detective: Night Country marks Jodie Foster’s first television appearance since the ’70s – not counting her handful of voiceover and narration guest roles in the ’90s and early ’00s – though certainly not her first time starring in a thriller. On November 2, Casey Bloys, the chief executive officer of both HBO and Max, announced HBO’s upcoming projects and confirmed reports that he and fellow executive Kathleen McCaffrey plotted to harass critics who wrote negative reviews of HBO’s shows, which came out during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Text messages revealed in a court case stated that the executive was displeased with Kathryn VanArendonk, a Vulture television critic, who criticized the reliance on flashbacks in Perry Mason. Another message took aim at the television critic of Rolling Stone, Alan Sepinwall, who gave The Nevers a two-and-a-half star rating.
These accusations had been part of an unlawful termination lawsuit filed back in July by a former HBO executive assistant, who was first hired as a temporary employee.
The ex-assistant stated that he was given the task of creating fake social media profiles to harass critics.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys apologized Thursday to a room of journalists following a Rolling Stone report that he instructed staffers to create fake social media accounts to troll TV critics who gave poor reviews to HBO shows.
During a press event Thursday to unveil HBO and Max’s programming slate for 2024, Bloys addressed members of the media — some of whom being the very critics he trolled — to confess that during the pandemic he spent an “unhealthy amount of time” on Twitter when he discussed using a “secret army” to hit back at reviewers.

HBO CEO and Chairman Chief Casey Bloys led off a presentation about 2024 programming Thursday by addressing a Rolling Stone report that said he had someone troll TV critics on X who didn’t like his shows.
“We’re here to talk about ’24, but I thought we might as well talk about it up front,” he began at the start of the presentation at Warner Bros. Discovery headquarters in New York City. “For those of you who know me, you know I am a programming executive who is very, very passionate about the shows that we decide to do and the people who do them and the people who work on them. I want the shows to be great. I want people to love them. I want you all to love them. It’s very, very important to me what you think of all the shows.”

When one thinks of HBO, one thinks of prestige TV and the network’s spate of wildly popular shows: most recently, “Succession, “The Last Of Us,” “House Of The Dragon,” and “Euphoria,” among others. But what about the HBO series that don’t fare as well with critics and audiences? Well, apparently HBO‘s CEO Casey Bloys has a special remedy to combat negative reviews: burner accounts on social media to troll critics of his shows.

In the wake of allegations that his division used fake Twitter accounts to undermine TV critics posting tepid reviews of HBO programming, network chief executive Casey Bloys addressed the claim during a meeting with the press on Thursday.
At a presentation of HBO’s 2024 content slate, Bloys cast the Twitter accounts as part of a pandemic-era “dumb idea.”
“For those of you who know me, you know that I am a programming executive, very, very passionate about the shows that we decided to do, and the people who do them and the people who work on them, I want the shows to be great,” Bloys said, adding: “So when you think of that mindset, and then think of 2020 and 2021. I’m working from home, spending an unhealthy amount of time scrolling through Twitter. And I came up with a very, very dumb idea to vent my frustration.”

HBO‘s Casey Bloys is due to speak to reporters on Thursday about the allegations that he orchestrated the use of burner Twitter accounts to argue with critics online.
“HBO intends to vigorously defend against Mr. Temori’s allegations. We are not going to comment on select exchanges between programmers and errant tweets,” a spokesperson for HBO told TheWrap, referring to the suit filed by Sully Temori. “We look forward to a full and fair resolution of this dispute. In the meantime, we wish Mr. Temori, a former HBO employee, well in his future endeavors.”
The alleged practice was unearthed by Rolling Stone in a new article that involves an ongoing wrongful termination dispute. According to text exchanges that were reviewed by the publication, during at least six instances that occurred between June 2020 and April 2021, Bloys and senior vice president of programming Kathleen McCaffrey used what they referred to as...

HBO has responded to allegations arising from a wrongful termination dispute with an ex-employee that accuse Casey Bloys, the network’s then-president of original programming, of commanding a “secret army” to push back against TV critics posting tepid reviews of HBO titles. In a statement, the company did not challenge claims that Bloys and another executive directed ex-hbo executive assistant Sully Temori to post from fake accounts, with the aim of undermining high-profile critics, as well as anonymous commenters on articles.
“HBO intends to vigorously defend against Mr. Temori’s allegations,” a spokesperson said. “We are not going to comment on select exchanges between programmers and errant tweets.”
The story was first reported by Rolling Stone. It draws upon a trove of messages that will be filed in a lawsuit from Temori against HBO, Warner Media, Kathleen McCaffrey, HBO’s senior vice president of drama programming, and Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama.

It’s not easy to deal with a negative review. But while most people shrug it off and move forward, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys employed a…unique approach. On multiple occasions, Bloys orchestrated the use of fake accounts to troll the critics on Twitter.
Between June 2020 and April 2021, as first reported by Rolling Stone, Bloys and his SVP of drama programming Kathleen McCaffrey repeatedly discussed using burner accounts to directly combat critics of their shows on Twitter. According to the publication, there were at least six different text-message exchanges between the two executives that involved using a fake Twitter account to harshly respond to TV critics who gave negative reviews to HBO shows. The messages were reviewed and verified via their metadata.

By the time the final episode of The Office aired on May 16, 2013, the NBC sitcom already had inked lucrative TV syndication deals. And its parent company, NBCUniversal, had decided to sell the streaming rights, too, to Netflix. Over the next few years, Netflix’s subscriber base discovered the show, ultimately forcing NBCU to buy back the rights for $500 million and make it a centerpiece of its new streaming service Peacock.
Since 2013, there has been a whole lot of change in the streaming space. But you might not know it if you look at the streaming ratings charts. Once again, Suits, an NBCUniversal show, is finding new life on Netflix, as the service reestablishes itself as the place to find TV shows and movies from every company.

Four years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making his latest film Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley has circled back around to Generation Z and is now knee-deep into filming it! To celebrate the fact that Generation Z is finally being made, Channel 4 has unveiled a batch of first look images, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Ahsoka."
You just never know who's going to show up in a galaxy far, far away these days. Whether it's "Cousin" Richie from "The Bear" (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) popping in to assist Cassian Andor on the Aldhani heist on "Andor" or Dr. John "J.D." Dorian from "Scrubs" (Zach Braff) playing the "Star Wars" equivalent of a Maga supporter on "Obi-Wan Kenobi," the supporting cast of the "Star Wars" franchise is an eclectic collection of top-of-the-line character actors and fan-favorites. Sometimes, however, you might not even recognize them, as they're buried under layers of makeup or wearing a helmet the entire time. That was exactly the case on the latest episode of "Ahsoka."
Titled "Far, Far Away," the episode follows those aboard the Eye of Scion to Peridea, the extra-galactic homeworld of the Dathomiri and a planet so ancient it had fallen into myth.

There won’t be a comeback for The Idol.
HBO won’t move ahead with a second season of the drama from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, who also starred. The series, starring Lily-Rose Depp as a pop star who falls under the sway of a Hollywood club owner (Tesfaye), suffered mostly negative reviews from critics, and viewership fell short of some other recent HBO shows.
“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
A decision on whether to renew or cancel The Idol was in flux until recently, sources say.

This story about the visual effects of the “Mom City” episode of “Ted Lasso” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If you survey the Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode category among this year’s Emmy nominations, it pretty much makes sense: “Wednesday,” “Shadow and Bone,” “The Nevers,” “The Umbrella Academy,” “Five Days at Memorial” (they had to recreate a hurricane) and… “Ted Lasso?”
“Yeah, it’s kind of an anomaly,” on-set visual effects supervisor James MacLachlan said before explaining how the scale of a feel-good comedy landed it a nomination alongside sci-fi/adventure romps. “We were very fortunate at the beginning. A lot of people loved the show and got on board. And with that comes the inevitable, ‘Well, let’s make next season just that little bit bigger, that little bit wider, that little bit more ambitious.

Paramount+’s “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” was nominated for two Emmys on Wednesday. There’s only one problem with these nominations: The show they’re for is impossible to watch.
That’s the odd reality the 75th Emmy Awards finds itself in during a time when streamers removing their own original content has become the norm.
Both of the nominations for “Rise of the Pink Ladies” were for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming, a category that honored choreographer Jamal Sims for the routines used in the songs “New Cool,” “Hand Jive” and “The Boom” as well as choreographers Jeffrey Mortensen and Louise Hradsky for the routines featured in “Pulling Strings,” “Hit Me Again” and “High Rollin.'” Yet at present the average person cannot watch any of these awards-nominated performances.

When the dust settled Wednesday, it was HBO and Max making the most of its rebranding, scoring 127 Emmy nominations and leading all networks and streamers, thanks in large part to significant contributions from “Succession,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus” and “Barry.” In a strong showing, Netflix earned the second-most nominations for the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. While HBO/Max’s total is down from last year’s 140, it was still enough for the brand to land on top on nominations morning.
HBO had the three top-performing series with regards to nominations, specifically “Succession,” which led all series with 27, “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). Netflix’s numbers were buoyed by 13 nominations apiece for “Dahmer” and “Beef, as well as “Wednesday” (12).

Following the lead of Max, Disney+ and Hulu, Paramount+ has announced it would cut a raft of shows and movies. Perhaps the most surprising of these was “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” which just had its finale on June 1. Within weeks of the season’s end, Paramount announced that the show was not only canceled but would be removed from Paramount+ entirely.
The musical comedy, a prequel to the original “Grease” movie, premiered on April 6 and struggled to take off until its final weeks when it reached its highest levels of demand, according to Parrot Analytics‘ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement. It peaked at 20 times the average series demand the day after its finale. Unfortunately for fans of the show, it won’t get a longer runway to make further inroads with audiences.

Add Paramount+ to the list of streamers that have removed content from their platforms in exchange for a tax write-off.
The Paramount Global-backed streamer has canceled Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies after a single season, reversed its decision on a season-two pickup for the animated and kids-focused Star Trek: Prodigy, axed competition series Queen of the Universe after two seasons, and nixed a revival of The Game after two seasons. Additionally, all four shows will be removed from Paramount+ as the conglomerate joins Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery in taking tax write-offs for underperforming series. The news comes as Paramount+ will incorporate Showtime into the platform in the U.S. on Tuesday.

The news comes as Paramount+ will incorporate Showtime into the platform in the U.S. on Tuesday.

The era of deep content cuts may be over at Warner Bros. Discovery, but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that CEO David Zaslav wants his legacy at the company to be primarily financial. Zaslav is continuing to chart his own path to streaming excellence at Wbd and is willing to buck some sacrosanct streaming rules in order to get there.
One such rule that has apparently gone by the board at Wbd is streaming exclusivity. An exclusive report from Deadline reveals the company is shopping some HBO Original series to Netflix, including the Issa Rae comedy series “Insecure.” Other titles have also been discussed, but nothing is final between the two companies yet, and the potential deal could still collapse.

In a turnaround for the streaming wars, Warner Bros. Discovery is in negotiations to license a package of library HBO titles to Netflix.
If a deal were to go through, it would cement the sea-change in content distribution strategy afoot at Warner Bros. Discovery under the David Zaslav regime. HBO has licensed library content in the past — a deal with Netflix would not be groundbreaking per se, but it is notable in the era of pitched competition among the largest media companies to build direct-to-consumer streaming platforms. Netflix, the upstart outsider from Los Gatos, has been the pace car for television’s transition over the past decade.
Among the titles under discussion are the Issa Rae comedy “Insecure.” The show premiered on HBO in 2016 and ran for five seasons until 2021. The deal is believed to be non-exclusive to Netflix, meaning that the titles would still be available on Max, Warner Bros.

Every time a fan-favorite HBO series bids farewell, the entertainment industry and the public alike wonder how the prestige TV network will outdo itself next.
This isn’t just any transitional moment for the network, though. Less than a month after the Writers Guild of America strike began, “Succession” and “Barry” aired their highly-anticipated series finales. Also, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, HBO’s new corporate boss, promised Wall Street that its direct-to-consumer business would turn a profit this year. This as linear TV networks across the industry are struggling to maintain viewership as cord-cutting accelerates. Meanwhile, the rebrand of HBO Max to Max has raised worries about the network’s position within the company’s streaming strategy.
Discovery, whose executives now largely run the newly combined company, was “used to low-cost programming,” Andy Goldman, a former vice president of program strategy and planning at HBO who now teaches...

The entire media landscape is in a serious transition period right now. Yes, streaming is the future (and that is why the Writer's Guild of America is on strike right now), but that future is probably going to look more like traditional TV than anyone thought a handful of years ago.
Part of that has to do with ad-supported, video-on-demand services (AVOD) such as Tubi, which have become quite popular in recent years -- particularly for those of us who are tired of paying for any number of subscription-based services such as Netflix. But Tubi, in particular, has oddly benefited from what has been generated by other major services on the market, particularly HBO Max (before it simply became Max).
I was on hand at the Atx Television Festival for a panel called "Fast, AVOD, and the Return to Ad-Supported TV," where Samuel Harowitz, the VP of Content Acquisition and Partnerships at Tubi,...
