Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović is debuting her follow-up to Cannes Camera d’Or-winning “Murina.”
The acclaimed writer-director, who was nominated for three Film Independent Spirit Awards, helms Miu Miu short film “Stane,” part of the brand’s “Women’s Tales” campaign. “Stane” premiered at the Venice Film Festival’s Giornate Degli Autori on September 3.
The official synopsis reads: A complex construction site, New York’s skyline in the distance, and fresh betrayal. Stane is in charge on-site, soon to inherit the family business from her father, who built it up as a Croatian immigrant also building the American dream. But Stane’s marriage is under threat of demolition. What ensues is a public reckoning between traditional, patriarchal expectations made upon wives versus Stane’s own pain and anger. But Stane is building her own life story though — outside of the permission of men.

French director Élise Girard’s “Sidonie in Japan,” starring Isabelle Huppert as a French writer mourning her husband’s death while on a book tour of Japan, is among titles set to launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Giornate Degli Autori.
The section, also known as Venice Days, has unveiled its lineup comprising 10 titles world premiering in competition – six of which are first works – and in other sections displaying a wide range of genres and visual styles, but tied together by “a common discourse,” said the section’s artistic director Gaia Furrer.
The selected films “with all their thematic or formal eclecticism, still dialogue with each other,” Furrer said in a statement.
Opening the section in competition is Italian director Tommaso Santambrogio’s black-and-white drama “Oceans Are the Real Continents,” set and shot in decadent contemporary Cuba (see image below). This is Santambrogio’s first feature, but...

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring all of the indie films which deserve honor and recognition - celebrating their 38th year. The 2023 winners of the Spirit Awards were announced Saturday evening, in their usual spot in Santa Monica near the beach - this time just a week before the Oscars. The big winner this year is, of course: Everything Everywhere All at Once, which took home a total of seven major awards - including Best Director, Best Screenplay, all three of the Best Performances wins (go Michelle Yeoh!!), and Best Feature. The other nominations from all the 2022 releases included many excellent indie films many critics have been talking up all year, deserving of some extra time in the spotlight - gems like Murina from Croatia, A Love Song from Colorado, Emily the Criminal with Aubrey Plaza, Kogonada's minimal sci-fi After Yang.

The host of the 2023 Spirit Awards, Hasan Minhaj, suggested in his monologue that Cate Blanchett was the one to beat at this year’s awards.
But instead, Blanchett and her film Tár nearly went home empty-handed, only winning one of the seven awards for which it was nominated. The Focus film won in the best cinematography category but lost in the other categories in which it was nominated.
Tár wasn’t the only movie with multiple Spirit Awards nominations to fail to win, as Everything Everywhere All at Once’s dominance meant that the following films, all of which were up for several awards, were also shut out: Four-time nominee Palm Trees and Power Lines and three-time nominees Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet; The Inspection; and Murina.

The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned pretty much a clean sweep: winning all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, and seven of its eight nominees winning overall — Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis were competing against each other in one category, Supporting Performance, with the former winning.

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."
These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have been named the best theatrical-film directors of 2022 for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” by the Directors Guild of America, which presented its 75th annual DGA Awards on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.
The two directors, who go by the name The Daniels, won for the freewheeling film, topping Steven Spielberg for “The Fabelmans,” Martin McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Todd Field for “Tar” and Joseph Kosinski for “Top Gun: Maverick.” They are only the third directing team to win the DGA Award, after the Coen brothers for “No Country for Old Men” and Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for “West Side Story.”
Spielberg, who is both the most-nominated and winningest film director in DGA history with 13 nominations and three wins, was the sentimental favorite going into the show, but “Everything Everywhere” has proven to be a surprisingly potent awards contender. The DGA win...

The Directors Guild of America revealed its winners for the 2023 DGA Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles Saturday night, with Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan taking home the top prize for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
To kick off the ceremony, Lesli Linka Glatter, the DGA’s president, offered welcome remarks before introducing host Judd Apatow, who has previously hosted the annual show three times.
During his opening monologue, the comedian delivered some punches, mocking the fact that the show was only being livestreamed “to the back of this room. This show is so irrelevant, it’s shocking Elon Musk hasn’t bought it yet.” His joke about “honoring the directors who didn’t feel a need to make a Pinocchio movie this year” received a big reaction from the audience, and he also nodded to the fact that there were no female filmmakers nominated in the top director category this year.

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s Murina has garnered her a DGA nomination for first-time feature — an honor she also won at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. That’s in large part because of her willingness to face her greatest fears in the name of her art. “I’m terrified of the water,” she says. “I needed to make a movie underwater, because I really wanted to tap into the fear. It’s important to include your fears in your work.”
A coming-of-age story, Murina follows Julija, a teenager living on a remote island in Croatia with her domineering father and subservient mother. When her dad’s wealthy friend Javier (Cliff Curtis) comes to stay with the family, tensions rise as he offers Julija a possible exit out of her abusive household.
Kusijanović grew up spending summers on a similar isle, passing her days exploring its rocky beaches. She made a similarly aquatic-focused short film,...

Just one year after Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”) became the second woman to win the Directors Guild of America’s First-Time Film Director award, Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”) is set to follow her as the category’s third female champ. The 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker, who helmed three narrative shorts between 2015 and 2017, has already been heavily feted for her feature directing (and writing) debut with accolades such as the Cannes French Touch Prize and the Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Director. Now, the fact that a whopping 96 of Gold Derby’s 2023 DGA Awards predictions odds-makers have her as their top choice in the rookie race should translate to a decisive win.
This category’s current lineup is the only one in its eight-year history to include just one male nominee. Last year’s unprecedented field of six consisted of two men and four women, including Gyllenhaal. Our odds show Wells far outpacing female contenders Alice Diop,...

As a short filmmaker, Beth de Araújo explored dark material — love affairs at any cost, the price of drug addiction, sorority hazing. But that’s not horror, right? She didn’t think so. Then she made her feature debut with the terrifying and ambitious “Soft & Quiet,” a one-shot, real-world white-power nightmare. And that’s the kind of feature that should scare anyone.
“It’s funny now that people pin me as a horror director, because I’ve never shot horror in my life, but I love it,” de Araújo said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “I love crossing over expectations. The film is certainly horrific, and I think a lot of my work leans into that.”

Croatian production house Antitalent has signed an option agreement to develop and produce a local version of the best-selling global format “Your Honor,” the hit drama whose American remake for Showtime stars Emmy winner Bryan Cranston.
The series follows a judge who must deal with the fallout when his son is involved in a hit-and-run that gets him embroiled with an organized crime family. Facing impossible choices, he discovers how far a father will go to save his son’s life.
The Balkan remake will travel across the former Yugoslavia with a story that spans Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia, according to Antitalent’s Danijel Pek. Speaking to Variety at the Sarajevo Film Festival, the producer said: “Our aim is to produce a high-quality TV series with the participation of some of the best authors and talents from the region.”

The summer box office season is typically filled with milestones of the blockbuster variety but this July, Columbia University’s film program is toasting one of its own. Four international female filmmakers (and Mfa grads) have their first features hitting theaters this month.
The roster includes Nathalie Alvarez Mesen’s Clara Sola, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic’s Murina, Mounia Akl’s Costa Brava, Lebanon, and Anna Gutto’s Paradise Highway. The latter film, about a truck driver who reluctantly agrees to smuggle illicit cargo (a little girl), is the most star-studded, with Juliette Binoche, Morgan Freeman, Cameron Monaghan and Frank Grillo. Also of note: Columbia grad Ellie Foumbi’s debut feature Our Father, the Devil, picked up an audience award last month during the Tribeca Festival in New York.

Say what you want about Martin Scorsese (comic book fanboys certainly do), but the man puts his money where his mouth is. Through initiatives like his The Film Foundation organization, he preserves the history of cinema. In his capacity as executive producer on a film like “Murina” by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, he’s putting a down payment on the future of cinema. Kusijanović storms out of the gate with a confident coming-of-age tale full of relationships as rocky as the craggy Croatian coast in which the story unfolds.

As the stunning Murina opens, a blue expanse of water fills the frame like a painterly abstraction. Two divers drift into view, otherworldly in their masks and flippers and seemingly united in their spear-fishing mission. Once they’re back in the sunlight, though, their moray-eel prey dying in a pail between them on the boat, the man and his 17-year-old daughter are not in harmony. They might even be mortal enemies.
With an exceptional quartet of lead actors and a potent immersion in the Croatian island locale — you can practically smell the salt air and sea — Murina draws the viewer straight into its emotional undertow. Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic and her co-writer, Frank Graziano, have constructed a taut story bristling with unease, and one that looks head-on at conflict. This review was adapted from a piece that ran on “Murina” when the film premiered in Cannes in July 2021.
The last few weeks in the United States have lent resonance to a current in international films that’s been growing over the past couple of years – stories of young women trying to find places for themselves in environments that afford them little or no agency in their own lives. The films have nothing to do with Roe v. Wade, but from the recent Cannes period drama “Corsage” (a royal woman chafing under physical and societal constraints) to the unsettling Costa Rican film “Clara Sola” (which puts a mystical spin on the awakening of female power) the movies can feel timely to viewers that see their own boundaries narrowing.

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s debut feature, Murina, is set on a Croatian island, where the adolescent protagonist Julija (Gracija Filipovic) usually fishes underwater with her father Ante (Leon Lucev). The fact that Julija usually observes the young people who have fun near her indicates an entire world is out there, waiting to be explored. Once the wealthy Javier (Cliff Curtis) – an old acquaintance of Ante and his wife Nela (Danica Curcic) – makes his appearance as he might invest in land, the main family’s reality surfaces. Ante’s repressive actions towards the women in his life become more nasty. Javier and Nela are evidently...

A24’s Marcel The Shell With Shoes On hit the top ten in North America at no. 8 with an estimated 340k in week three at just 48 locations and a cume north of 963k – the latest hit for the distributor after powerhouse Everything Everywhere All At Once blasted off at the specialty box office. Marcel, based on a popular 2010 YouTube series, is on a much slower rollout than that, but in terms of specialized releases it’s one of the biggest since Covid.
The distributor acquired Dean Fleischer Camp’s stop-motion/live-action hybrid about an adorable snail, voiced by Jenny Slate, at Telluride last fall and screened it at SXSW – where Everything Everywhere made a splash. It’s a favorite with critics (99 Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), has strong word-of-mouth (92 Rt audience score) and corresponding stellar exit polls. It will expand to 130-150 screens next week setting up for a long summer run.

The nation’s fourth-largest cinema chain is testing a new subscription program called MovieFlex+ that includes a curated set of small and mid-sized films each week for no extra charge.

The launch of the 14.99 monthly service comes as the box office renaissance for wide-release studio franchises is clear, but whether that’s trickling down to smaller films less so. At issue is the long-term health of a theatrical ecosystem with breadth and depth of product.
Marcus began testing MovieFlex+ in two markets in January along with a general subscription plan, also new, called MovieFlex for 9.99 a month that offers one free film of choice. Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s career is off to quite a start: the filmmaker made her feature debut with “Murina,” which won the Camera d’Or upon its 2021 Cannes premiere. But while it’s a distinctly feminine film, Kusijanović’s coming-of-age drama isn’t your typical “woman film,” as Kusijanović told IndieWire. And that may be its greatest asset — and a look at what’s to come for the rising star.
The lushly voyeuristic “carnal” family drama centers on 17-year-old diver and eel fisherwoman Julija (Gracija Filipović) as she struggles to slip out of the dictatorial grasp of her father Ante (Leon Lucev) and stifled mother Nela (Danica Curcic). When wealthy family friend Javier (Cliff Curtis) comes to town for a business investment, Julija sees a way out — no matter the cost.

Directorial debuts rarely arrive as fully formed as Murina, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s riveting Cannes Camera d’Or winner that follows a coming-of-age journey of liberation and rebellion. Led by Gracija Filipović in a revelatory performance, the Croatian drama bursts with tension in every frame, following a love triangle-of-sorts set against a cruelly domineering patriarchal figure.

"He forgets about us the moment he boards the plane." Kino Lorber has revealed another new official US trailer for the worth watching Croatian film Murina, now opening in July in the US in just a few months. I highly recommend seeing this when it opens, worth it on the big screen. It initially premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival playing in Director's Fortnight, winner of the Golden Camera award. A Croatian teen tries to replace her controlling father with a wealthy foreigner on a weekend trip to the Adriatic Sea, causing turmoil. She hopes it will help her escape her life at home for something more, but it doesn't go as planned. Starring Gracija Filipovic as Julija, Danica Curcic, Leon Lucev, Cliff Curtis, and Jonas Smulders. I saw this film during TIFF last year and it's fantastic. Excellent cinematography and a riveting story about this young woman fighting back against her misogynistic father.

It’s nice seeing a movie grow from festival stand-out to full-blown theatrical release. Credit to Kino Lorber for taking up Murina, which won Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic the Camera d’Or for best first feature at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and begins a U.S. run on July 8. An executive producer credit for Martin Scorsese and cinematography duties by Hélène Louvart are one thing, but in Murina you’ll be most impressed by newcomer Gracija Filipovic, who engages in a strange game of flirtation with her father’s co-worker (Cliff Curtis) in deceptively picturesque locales.
Ahead of the release is a theatrical trailer that neatly sells the film. For a bit of context, our review says “The onscreen duplicity resonates in a way that’s universal; we can see everyone’s winks, scowls, and hesitation as they try to keep the peace opposite Julija’s rising impatience towards...

An eel will eat its own skin to survive. So what would a teenage girl — a similarly slippery force of nature — be willing to do for her freedom?
Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović helms the coming-of-age story and 2021 Cannes Camera d’Or winner “Murina,” which opens in select theaters July 8, as distributed stateside by Kino Lorber. Executive-produced by Martin Scorsese and featuring cinematography by “The Lost Daughter” and “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” director of photography Hélène Louvart, the lush family drama is a captivating Croatian tale of mother-daughter jealousies, outdated patriarchal powers, and adolescent angst. Watch the trailer for the film, exclusively on IndieWire, below.
