It’s no secret that horror too often elicits kneejerk reactions from narrow-minded critics who, for some reason or another, aren’t willing to give its particular brand of storytelling a fair shake. There are countless examples of films that have received lukewarm to scathing critiques from reviewers upon their release only to be embraced as classics years later, sometimes even by the same writers that originally did them dirty. Last House on the Left (1972), The Shining (1980) and, perhaps most famously, The Thing (1982) were all savaged for various reasons during their initial runs but are now not only thought of as staples of their genre but of cinema as a whole.
This was also the case for Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace (1964). Barely making a splash with audiences and critics alike when it was released in Italy 60 years ago this month, the picture’s impact would soon be gargantuan.

At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Possession horror tends to take the possession seriously, opting for full-throttle scares and intense emotional or faith-related stakes.

This year’s Rhode Island Comic Con guest list boasted big names like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Carrie-Anne Moss, Christina Ricci, Evangeline Lilly, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Linda Hamilton, and Marissa Tomei, to name a few, alongside hundreds of vendors and artists.
A highlight of the weekend was an intimate panel with legendary special effects artist-turned-director Greg Nicotero, who shared his reflections on The Walking Dead now that it has come to an end, in addition to insight from nearly 40 years in the industry.

When brothers in a rural Argentinian town discover a possessed man, they decide to move him away with the help of some townspeople in the hopes of saving the town from being “infected”. What follows is the consequence of their arrogance, which may lead to the birth of true evil. When Evil Lurks is a Spanish-language Argentinian film directed by Demian Rugna (Terrified), starring Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón in lead roles. I’d say that as a horror enthusiast, I’ve seen quite a few questionable films in my time, but this one has to take the cake for the most anxiety-inducing one. I could say this film is deliciously evil, at least for those who like to dabble in the world of horror, but it would be a disservice to how grotesque the whole thing is. When Evil Lurks is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s...

We probably won’t see this week’s streaming debuts on the Oscars’ nomination roster come January, but they offer a variety of genres that will satisfy whatever mood you find yourself in this weekend.
The contender to watch this week: “Pain Hustlers“
The opioid epidemic has fueled a wave of movie and TV shows in the last few years, from “Dopesick” and “Ben Is Back” to the gorgeous Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.” Hollywood’s latest Big Pharma indictment is a star-studded dramedy directed by “Harry Potter” alum David Yates. Based on a book by journalist Evan Hughes, “Pain Hustlers” features Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, and Andy Garcia in a crime saga revolving around a pharmaceutical start-up whose founder served two years in prison. Reviews have been tepid, but “Hustlers” is now streaming on Netflix following a limited theatrical release.

Blink-182 have officially released One More Time…, the first album to feature Tom DeLonge alongside Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker in over a decade. Check it out below via Apple Music and Spotify.
DeLonge left Blink in 2014, as the band was preparing to record the follow-up to their 2011 album Neighborhoods. Hoppus and Barker released two albums, California and Nine, with the singer-guitarist’s replacement, Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio. The pop-punk veterans announced the return of DeLonge last year with the single “Edging,” then recorded One More Time… during their reunion tour. Given their history, it makes sense that the group said the record covers “themes of tragedy, triumph, and most importantly, brotherhood.”
Produced by Barker, One More Time… also features the singles “More Than You Know,” “Dance with Me,” and “Fell in Love,” as well as its title track.

A24’s Dicks: The Musical had one of the best limited openings of the year, grossing $220,867 on seven screens in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. It expands in NY/LA/Sf next weekend ahead of a national rollout starting 10/20 for the R-rated romp directed by Larry Charles.

Sharp and Aaron star as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents played by Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally. A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. The other demonic possession movie opening this week, “When Evil Lurks” is unlikely to steal major box-office thunder from “The Exorcist: Believer.” But Argentine genre specialist Demian Rugna’s latest is no mere opportunistic cash-in, either, with its own distinctive and non-formulaic take on the notion of an evil spirit that strikes like a malignant disease. IFC Films is releasing this uneven but engrossing, sometimes startling horror thriller to several hundred U.S. theaters on October 6. Shudder’s first Spanish-language original production begins streaming on that platform October 27.
Rugna had an international breakout five years ago with his third feature “Terrified” (aka “Aterrados”), about a fantastical, lethal infestation in a couple of middle-class Buenos Aires households. A Guillermo del Toro-produced English-language remake was announced, as well as “Terrified 2,” though neither has yet come to pass. Instead, we have this new “contagion” thriller, which trades its predecessor’s supposedly scientifically-explicable menace for a supernatural one,...

Stars: Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demian Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvina Sabater | Written and Directed by Demián Rugna
When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.
Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

When Evil Lurks, written and directed by Demián Rugna, is a no-holds-barred demon-slaying nightmare of blood and guts and unstoppable evil. Set in a world where demonic possession has become as commonplace as a zombie outbreak in post-apocalyptic Texas, the story follows a series of family under attack by a diabolic force of death and destruction.
Brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy’s (Demián Salomón) world is flip-turned upside-down when they discover a possessed man in a farmhouse next door to their property. This poor unfortunate soul has been in the grips of a demon for so long that his body has begun to rot and swell in a delectably disgusting fashion. It’s a real “My 666 Lb Life” scenario and just looking at his rotting bloat is enough to make you throw up in your mouth a little bit. As this man’s body dies, the demon’s powers grow stronger,...

When Evil Lurks Review: A Cruel, Bloody Possession Movie For Sickos, By Sickos [Fantastic Fest 2023]
Possession movies, much like zombie movies, are a dime a dozen. They follow most of the same tropes and aesthetics established in part by William Friedkin's "The Exorcist." This is to say, there are not many movies that can make the sub-genre feel fresh.
"When Evil Lurks" is one such movie. Demián Rugna's follow-up to "Terrified" is a bigger, more ambitious movie, and one that is quite cruel and gory. Most impressively, the film has quite a robust worldbuilding that becomes more complex and terrifying as the film reveals more. There's not much in terms of exposition, but you know just enough about what is going on beyond our protagonist to be interested in learning about this messed-up, bleak, Fulci-esque nightmare world where no adult, child, or dog is safe.
Set in rural Argentina, "When Evil Lurks" follows two brothers (Ezequiel Rodriguez and Demián Salomon) who find a...

"We have to find the beast before more are born." Several years after bringing visceral nightmares to life onscreen in Terrified (aka Aterrados), Demián Rugna is introducing viewers to "a horror you can't unsee" in the official trailer for his new movie When Evil Lurks, coming to theaters on October 6th via IFC Films ahead of its October 20th streaming debut on Shudder.
Synopsis: When brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomón) discover that a demonic infection has been festering in a nearby farmhouse — its very proximity poisoning the local livestock — they attempt to evict the victim from their land. Failing to adhere to the proper rites of exorcism, their reckless actions inadvertently trigger an epidemic of possessions across their rural community. Now they must outrun an encroaching evil as it corrupts and mutilates everyone it is exposed to, and enlist the aid of a wizened “cleaner,” who holds...

Between "Talk To Me" and "Evil Dead Rise," you'd think the superlative for 2023's best horror movie trailer would've already been won by now, but there's a late contender this week in the form of the horrifying new promo for "When Evil Lurks." It's no surprise this movie looks scary as hell, as it comes from Demián Rugna, the filmmaker behind 2017's downright freaky Buenos Aires-set horror flick "Terrified." Not to be confused with killer clown movie "Terrifier," "Terrified" is a disturbing movie about a suburban investigation of a demonic presence that goes frighteningly, unforgettably wrong.
"When Evil Lurks" is Rugna's long-awaited follow-up as a writer-director (he directed last year's "Satanic Hispanics" but didn't pen the script), and it's poised to move the thrills and chills from a seemingly peaceful neighborhood to a rural landscape plagued by freaky goats and the promise of a looming evil. According to the official synopsis,...

Coming like a bat out of hell to theaters September 14th is the long-anticipated Latino anthology horror film Satanic Hispanics. Filmmakers Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) and Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead) spearhead this fun, yet creepy grindhouse-like horror adventure, combining their artistic forces with horror filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), and Demián Rugna (Terrified). These five Latinos groundbreakers in horror bring their unique styles in distinctive segments that are intertwined in a police investigation of a mysterious and sadistic massacre, with a lone survivor telling horrific tales that are beyond belief.
All five directors share what films and filmmakers impacted them, how Satanic Hispanics came to be, their segments, and the importance of Latino participation in horror.
What is your favorite horror movie?
Mendez: I have two, my favorite horror movie and the best horror movie. The best horror movie is The Exorcist.

Writer/Director Demián Rugna broke onto the horror scene with 2017’s aptly titled Terrified (Aterrados), a paranormal tour de force of shocking imagery and genuine scares. Rugna continues that streak with his latest, When Evil Looks, including the central theme of infectious evil. This time, however, the Argentinian filmmaker shifts gears to take on possession horror unafraid to spill buckets of blood and jaw-dropping violence.
The possession horror feature flips the script by starting with an exorcism rather than building up to one. More accurately, the gnarly reign of terror begins with a botched exorcism. Horror anthology Satanic Hispanics assembles five Latin American horror filmmakers to celebrate Hispanic talent in front of and behind the camera, curating tales that spotlight Hispanic myths and legends. Uniting four tales of terror is Satanic Hispanics‘ wraparound from producer/director Mike Mendez.
In Mendez’s wraparound, a police raid uncovers a grisly crime scene full of dead bodies. They take the sole survivor, a man that refers to himself as “The Traveler” (Efren Ramirez), into custody for answers. The Traveler attempts to explain the bizarre events that led up to his capture to skeptical detectives Gibbons (Sonya Eddy) and Arden (Greg Grunberg). He entertains them with four tales of supernatural encounters, hoping to persuade them to let him go.

Five Latino filmmakers have come together for the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics, releasing in theaters on Friday, September 14, 2023. Ahead of the release, Bloody Disgusting has been provided an exclusive clip introducing the anthology’s enigmatic storyteller.
In the film, “When police raid a house in El Paso, they find it full of dead Latinos, and only one survivor. He’s known as The Traveler, and when they take him to the station for questioning he tells them those lands are full of magic and talks about the horrors he’s encountered in his long time on this earth, about portals to other worlds, mythical creatures, demons and the undead. Stories about Latin American legends.”
Meet the Traveler, played by Efren Ramirez, in the clip below. Helmed by director Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), the Traveler is featured in the wraparound that connects four other tales of terror.

It's the most fantastic time of the year once again, when the fans of the creepy, the weird, the fun, and the bizarre gather in Austin Texas to celebrate a whole week of the best genre cinema has to offer during another iteration of Fantastic Fest.
