Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

Leanne Morgan, the comedian whose stand-up special I’m Every Woman brought the down-home, relatable laughs, will become a sitcom matriarch now that Netflix has ordered 16 episodes of an as-yet-untitled multicamera series, in which she’ll star and serve as co-creator and executive producer. The scripted comedy series is co-created by Morgan and prolific TV comedy writer and producer Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory), whose most recent project for Netflix is the Golden Globe–winning The Kominsky Method.
The as-yet-untitled project will kick off with Leanne’s life taking an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. The rest of the logline covers topics that will sound familiar to fans of Morgan’s stand-up: “Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace,...

Morgan co-created the series with Lorre and Susan McMartin. Netflix has given the untitled show a 16-episode order, while also commissioning two more stand up specials from Morgan. That will mark her second and third specials at the streamer following 2023’s “I’m Every Woman.”
“I’ve dreamed of this since childhood, and I can’t believe it has come true! When I started comedy 25 years ago, my goal was to be a part of a sitcom,” Morgan said. “It just goes to show you it’s never too late, and dreams do come true. I’m a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?”

What happened to Sloan on Days of our Lives? That’s a question on Day’s fans’ minds after the hit Peacock soap did a switcheroo with the actress playing Sloan.
Jessica Serfaty has played legal eagle and troublemaker Sloan Peterson since the character hit Salem in 2022.
However, today’s Days of our Lives episode pulled a fast one on fans with a new actress in the role.
The only information given to viewers was a voiceover announcing that Natasha Hall is now playing the character.
Then it was business as usual, with Sloan now taking over Tate’s (Jamie Martin Mann) case because of Theresa (Emily O’Brien) and her new brilliant idea to help her son.
So why the sudden change in who’s playing Sloan on the hit daytime drama?
Let’s take a look at what we know.

“Days of our Lives” fans will see an unfamiliar face in a familiar role when soap newcomer Natasha Hall temporarily replaces Jessica Serfaty as Sloan Petersen for at least three episodes during the week of March 4-8, 2024.

The Screen Actors Guild Award race for best comedy actor may seem like an easy decision for Jeremy Allen White, who seems to be an unstoppable force, sweeping all the award shows for the debut season of “The Bear,” and already winning the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for the second installment. While the FX series has been dominating the television categories, White faces an obstacle at the SAG Awards that could pave the way for another actor from a different series, namely Bill Hader for the final season of “Barry.”

Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner presented by A+E Studios on Thursday night gathered writers recognized on the publication’s annual TV Producers Impact List, as well as several of this year’s Emmy nominees. In addition, megaproducer Chuck Lorre was honored with Variety’s first Norman Lear Award.
Held at Merois, on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, the Variety Showrunners Dinner included a very funny acceptance speech by Lorre, who pointed out some of the similarities — but more humorously, the differences — between the two icons.
“I think everyone here understands the enormity and significance of Norman Lear’s body of work,” Lorre began. “So in accepting this award, I don’t think it’s false modesty to take a moment and focus on the very large differences between his career and my own. For starters, Norman Lear began his career writing for Hollywood legends like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Ayo Edebiri‘s upgrade to lead for Season 2 of “The Bear” has already cooked up some good results. She earned her inaugural Golden Globe nomination in Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress, setting up the FX hit to achieve a rare Globe hat trick: sweeping three comedy categories in the same year.
And “The Bear” is expected to do just that in the early odds, sitting in first place in Best Comedy/Musical Series, Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress for Edebiri and Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor for Jeremy Allen White. The last show to accomplish this was “30 Rock” in 2009. The NBC comedy won its only series Globe then and earned lead acting honors for Tina Fey (her second of two) and Alec Baldwin (his second of three). Prior to this, you have to go all the way back to 1993 for another comedy triple play, when “Roseanne” and stars Roseanne Barr and John Goodman prevailed.

"It's only a matter of time before California legalizes sports betting..." Max Originals has revealed the first official trailer for a series titled simply Bookie, which is launching for streaming later in November. Worth a look, seems pretty good. It's a shortened version of the original title How to Be a Bookie, which is the latest TV comedy creation from brand name producer Chuck Lorre, known for "The Big Bang Theory" and "The Kominsky Method" and many other hit series. A veteran bookie named Danny is struggling to survive the impending legalization of sports gambling, increasingly unstable lifestyle that bounces him around every corner of Los Angeles. The eight-episode series will stream with two new episodes dropping every week this fall. Sebastian Maniscalco stars as Danny, with Omar J. Dorsey co-starring as his buddy Ray. The cast also features Charlie Sheen, along with Andrea Anders, Vanessa Ferlito, Jorge Garcia, and Maxim Swinton.

As they were writing the pilot script for their new Max comedy series “Bookie,” co-creators Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay thought it would be fun to add a real-life Hollywood star playing a version of themself as an inveterate gambler. The series stars stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco as Los Angeles sports betting bookie, so it made sense that his character might run into a few high-roller celebrities during his travels.
In early drafts of that Lorre and Bakay script, the character was left as a “Tbd” — to be determined. But Lorre couldn’t shake an idea he had for who might be perfect for the role: “It should be Charlie,” he tells Variety. “I remember Charlie was very much engaged in in sports betting and he would tell me stories about it all the time. You know, when things were good.”

Details as to topics he’ll cover in the special haven’t been disclosed. But his latest comes on the heels of Paul Reiser: 3 ½ Blocks from Home and Paul Reiser: Out on a Whim, which were respectively released in 1991 and 1987. “People don’t always believe me when I tell them that getting out and doing standup is the most fun part of all these projects,” Reiser told Deadline. “But it’s always been my first love and I’m so excited to be doing another special!”

Months after scoring his first Emmy notice for playing a fictionalized version of himself on “Jury Duty,” James Marsden is seeking recognition from the Screen Actors Guild for the same meta performance. Since he is, of course, eligible as both a solo actor and cast member, his lifetime SAG Award nominations total could soon rise to seven, with this possibly being his third Best TV Comedy Ensemble outing. Based on the fact that his previous two bids came for his work on as many programs, he now has a strong shot at blazing a trail as the first man to earn SAG ensemble mentions for three different comedy series.
According to Gold Derby’s 2024 SAG Awards odds, the actors from “Jury Duty” are comfortably ranked fifth in the comedy ensemble race with the support of 60% of our prognosticating users. On the Amazon Freevee original, Marsden ostensibly acts as a Los...

You might think that the fact the Emmys haven’t yet been handed out might serve to hamstring the Golden Globes. But that presumption would be incorrect, since the Globes are especially difficult to predict because they rarely follow any established pattern. Emmy winners in particular seem to have little impact on which TV series wind up triumphant at the Globes as well.
Consider some recent history. While the Emmys were honoring either ABC’s “Modern Family” (five) and HBO’s “Veep” (three) for eight consecutive years in the Best Comedy Series category, the Globes were paying tribute to fledgling streaming comedies like Amazon’s “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” Sometimes, that makes it a trendsetter in honoring the new and buzzworthy. We’ll see if that continues this year when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as we knew it has been disbanded and there will theoretically be a...

This November, after three full years of waiting, fans of FX’s “Fargo” will be treated to a brand new season. Unlike the anthology series’ fourth iteration, which served as a prequel to its first two, the upcoming fifth batch of episodes will tell an entirely original Midwestern crime story. Leading the season’s star-studded cast is Jon Hamm, who has his sights set on earning his first Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Golden Globe nomination this winter. Since he was already honored in the corresponding drama series category for “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2016, his possible new victory would make him the seventh man to clinch Golden Globes for performances on both continuing and non-continuing TV programs.
Hamm, who picked up four additional Golden Globe bids for “Mad Men” between 2009 and 2013, has already begun his splashy 2023 return to prestige TV by playing a new supporting role on the third season of “The Morning Show.

Actor Michael Douglas still remains a top Hollywood A-lister even after his decades’ worth of work in the film industry. But there was one film where the Oscar-winner remembered he started to feel his age.

The Sentinel was a 2006 thriller where Douglas played a secret service agent accused of trying to assassinate the President. He worked alongside 24 star Kiefer Sutherland and Eva Longoria on the project, and was drawn to the movie after a three-year hiatus from filming .Douglas, admitted, however, that he felt a bit out of place when working alongside his younger co-stars. In Chuck Lorre’s prolific career creating some of the most successful sitcoms in television history, wringing laughter amid the tears is a typical part of the experience. Serious subject matters on shows such as Mom (familial alcoholism) and The Kominsky Method delivered gut punches of reality mixed with big laughs. On the other hand, shows like the massive hit The Big Bang Theory spun laughs out of quirky characters and comical situations with the occasional heartfelt moment. His newest series, Bookie, co-created with Nick Bakay, leans into straight humor, and sees veteran Los Angeles sports bookie Danny (comic Sebastian Maniscalco) grappling with a changing industry. “Danny’s great at his job, which is quickly being made obsolete by online sports books,” explains executive producer Judi Marmel. In his work, he’s exposed to a variety of clients. “All parts of L.A. are represented, from the very wealthy areas to the sketchy neighborhoods,...

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

San Marcos, Calif – There was an Alan Arkin for every generation. Post World War Two adults may have seen him at Chicago’s “The Second City.” Baby Boomers remember his films “Wait Until Dark” and “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians are Coming” and Gen X saw him in “The In-Laws”, “Glengarry Glen Ross” and his Oscar winning turn in “Little Miss Sunshine.” He even did a Netflix series, “The Kominsky Method.” For every generation, for every form of acting, there was Alan Arkin. He passed away on June 29th, 2023, at the age of 89.
Alan Wolf Arkin was born in Brooklyn, and started acting at age 10. After not graduating from two colleges he joined The Second City in 1960 Chicago, one year after it was founded. His feature film debut was the musical “Calypso Heat Wave” (1957), he debuted on Broadway in a Second City revue and did episodic TV during the 1960s.

The first time I saw Alan Arkin onscreen, he scared the hell out of me.
The veteran Academy Award-winning actor, who died Thursday at the age of 89, is best known these days for his wittily avuncular presence in films like Little Miss Sunshine and such television shows as The Kominsky Method, his last great acting role. But my first exposure to him came in middle school, where for some inexplicable reason the powers that be decided that treating the entire student body to a screening of the film Wait Until Dark was a good idea.
In that classic 1967 thriller, Arkin played Harry Roat, the most sadistic member of a trio of villains terrorizing a blind Audrey Hepburn because they think she possesses a doll filled with heroin. In a climactic scene set in almost near-darkness, a seemingly dead Roat suddenly jumps into the frame and grabs Hepburn by the leg.

Alan Arkin, the versatile actor who finally won an Oscar — for Little Miss Sunshine — after making a career of disappearing into characters with turns that could be comic, chilling or charming, has died. He was 89.
His sons, Adam, Matthew and Anthony, announced the news in a joint statement. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man,” they said. “A loving husband, father, grand and great-grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”
He had heart trouble and died Thursday at his home in San Marcos, California.
In his first significant role in a feature, Arkin received a rare best actor Oscar nomination for work in a comedy when he played a Russian sailor whose submarine is marooned off the coast of a New England fishing village in Norman Jewison’s The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming (1966).
