Fans of Greek surrealist filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos know that there's a lot to love about his dark, bizarre films, but it can be very difficult to recommend them to people. Social rules are often thrown out the window and what we think of as standard human behavior is often turned on its head, which make his films uncomfortable even before digging into some of the tougher subject matter. For those who are willing to view the world through Lanthimos' slightly tilted (and fish-eyed) lens, however, these films are beautiful explorations of the human condition. But which is the best? If someone were going to dip their toe into his work, or only had the time and energy to watch one film, which film should they pick?
Fear not, intrepid film fan, because I'm here with the definitive /Film ranking of all of Lanthimos' feature films -- from his earliest Greek-language efforts to his latest,...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ films look different from each other, but they feel the same. Since the Greek director has made the transition from independent Greek cinema to larger Hollywood productions, the washed-out, largely white palettes and simple trappings of his earliest films have given way to more sumptuous cinematography and staging. Even the frills of thrillers like “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” feel bare-bones compared to his recent embrace of the costume drama with “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” both of which feature alternatively gorgeous and (intentionally!) garish production design and costuming.
But when you look past the budget and the aesthetics of each film, every movie that Lanthimos has made feel like they share a similar cinematic language. The characters in his films tend to communicate through stilted but natural dialogue that often tilts toward deadpan, and hide their cruelty behind politeness and social niceties. And his films are cruel,...

Ty Segall has released the final single from his upcoming album, Three Bells, out January 26th via Drag City. Titled “My Best Friend,” the track is an ode to Segall’s dogs, Fanny and Herman. Stream it below.
The accompanying music video follows the Pov of one of Segall’s four-legged companions, with a camera attached to the Dachshund’s back as it embarks on a day of adventures. “My best friend is easy/ He is laying on my bed,” Segall sings in coasting falsetto over shots of beach trips, living room roughhousing, and reluctantly accepted face-licking. “He said, ‘I love you, yes I do.'”
“My Best Friend” comes after the previously-released Three Bells singles “Void,” “Eggman,” and “My Room.” The 15-song album poses as a “journey to the center of the self,” according to a press release.

Ty Segall has announced his latest solo album, Three Bells, due January 26th. He accompanied the announcement with the project’s latest single, “My Room.”
Three Bells was co-produced by Segall and Cooper Crain, who worked together on 2021’s Harmonizer and 2022’s Hello, Hi. The 15-song release includes five collaborations with Segall’s wife Denée Segall as well as appearances throughout with members of his backing Freedom Band including bassist Emmett Kelly.
Segall also dropped “My Room,” the third offering from Three Bells following the seven-minute jam “Void” in August and the September single, “Eggman.” The song offers plenty of the Segall’s signature movies like a twisty acoustic riff and screechy guitar effects, and yet the singer-songwriter still manages to get pelted by bananas in the accompanying music video. Watch it below.
Three Bells arrives on January 26th via Drag City. Pre-orders are ongoing.

The recent passing of Terence Davies and the tributes that followed — tales of a steel will, impassioned budgetary battles and a host of dream projects that never materialized — give this highly personal tribute to Scottish filmmaker Bill Douglas an extra and very poignant relevance as a similar story, now depressingly familiar to the British film industry, of an uncompromising talent who left us with a tantalizing promise of what might have been. Now largely unknown to the wider world but very dear to the heart of Scotland (despite the fact that he left his homeland at the earliest opportunity), Douglas is the closest thing to a Rosetta Stone in recent British independent and social-realist cinema. From his early home movies through to his last three-hour masterwork Comrades (1986), the director left an indelible imprint that still seems shockingly modern today, leaving traces in everything from Derek Jarman’s early Super-8 works...

Legendary Entertainment and Sam Raimi‘s Ghost House Pictures are teaming up to bring an adaptation of My Best Friend’s Exorcism author Grady Hendrix’s best-selling horror novel How to Sell a Haunted House to the screen, Variety reports. Hendrix is writing the screenplay adaptation himself, and James Ashcroft – who made his feature directorial debut with the 2021 horror film Coming Home in the Dark – is on board to direct.
Hendrix’s novel (pick up a copy Here) has the following description: When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. We don't know how you're going to take it all in because the complete program of this year's Beyond Fest is a beast. This year's festival boasts ten world premieres, including Halloween Ends, My Best Friend's Exorcism and Christmas Bloody Christmas. There are quite a few festival faves in the mix as well, including Something in the Dirt and Huesera. You would be remiss to pass on the screening of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, paired with a rare screening of Uhf on 35mm. There are the tribute programs for Park Chan-wook, William Friedkin and William Shatner. There are four IMAX screenings at their world headquarters; screenings of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Gravity, Dunkirk and Mad Max Fury Road. Everything you need...

It’s 1988, and best friends Abby and Gretchen are navigating boys, pop culture, and a paranormal force clinging to Gretchen like a pair of neon legwarmers. Chinese production firm Aim Media has licensed the North American rights of director Yang Lina’s “Spring Tide” to distributor China Lion. Smart Cinema, the digital venture by former Wanda executive Jack Gao, has also bought the rights to screen the film on its platform in South Korea.
Yang is an independent documentary maker turned feature film director who is making a trilogy of films about women. “Spring Tide” is the second in that series. It tells a story of family dysfunction in which a woman must deal with the competing demands of her daughter and mother as they all live together in a small apartment. Featuring an all-female cast and starring Hao Lei, it debuted in competition at the Shanghai International Film Festival last year.
Aim Media had intended for the film to screen theatrically sometime between March and May, but when the coronavirus shuttered cinemas, it moved the title straight to streaming.

For all of his seemingly out-there ideas and distinctive obsessions, Oscar-nominated Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos is one of world cinema’s most consistent creators. Even in his earliest solo feature, the hard-to-find “Kinetta,” Lanthimos’ unique aesthetic and worldview takes center stage. In the 2005 feature, bound for a U.S. release after all these years, Lanthimos’ panache for building out disturbing self-contained worlds that are bound by their own wild logic and weirdo rules is clear.
Though the film screened at various festivals in 2005 and 2006, it was never released stateside. Author of Paperbacks from Hell, Horrorstör, and We Sold Our Souls, Grady Hendrix has become one of the must-read storytellers of modern horror over the past several years, and a feature film adaptation of his 2016 novel, My Best Friend's Exorcism, is now in the works with Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon on board to produce and potentially direct.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the exciting news about the in-the-works "feature adaptation" of My Best Friend's Exorcism following Endeavor Content's acquirement of the rights to adapt the book.
THR reveals that Landon is "developing the feature adaptation as a potential directing vehicle," but it's not yet confirmed if he will direct or only produce the adaptation of the Quirk Books publication. Sascha Rothchild with the cast of ‘Glow’.
It took 10 years for Sascha Rothchild to become an overnight success.
After studying playwriting at Boston College, Rothchild moved to La at 21 with the clear goal of writing half hour TV comedy. After writing a few spec scripts, she quickly managed to get an agent and thought, at least temporarily, that she’d made it. However, she’d go out to meetings but never get staffed in rooms. Frustrated, she turned her focus instead to features. Those scripts got more attention, yet nothing sold.
The whole time Rothchild was waitressing and doing odd jobs to make ends meet.
She kept trying and trying to crack it as a writer, but in the meantime seven or eight years had gone by.
Around that time, she kept getting parking tickets and was wondering if she could even afford to live in La. It seemed like...

The author of Horrorstor, My Best Friend's Exorcism and Paperbacks From Hell, Hendrix wrote the spec with his Mohawk co-writer Ted Geoghegan many blood moons before they collaborated on Geoghegan's latest film.
