But McDonald knows audiences will have a different reaction to the streaming behemoth’s first interactive romantic comedy, which he directed. Way back in 2016, when “Netflix movie” still sounded like a contradiction in terms, McG and producer Mary Viola’s Wonderland Sound and Vision began developing its first project for Netflix, “When We First Met.” As one of the first Netflix rom-coms, no one knew exactly what a Netflix rom-com was supposed to be; McG made it his mission to find out.
Netflix Original Independent Film VP Ian Bricke remembers that as soon as the deal closed, McG turned his high-energy patter toward trying to understand exactly what Netflix wanted from its original films — everything from demographics to the way the platform worked. “As a creative and as a businessman and a producer, he’s always looking around the corner — what’s the next thing?” said Bricke. “The fact that it was uncharted territory, the wild west, was part of the appeal for him.”

Netflix has launched production in New Orleans on the comedy movie “Tall Girl,” with newcomer Ava Michelle in the title role following a worldwide casting call.
Michelle, who fits the billing at 6-foot one-inch, will play a 16-year-old who is the tallest female at a high school, where she has never felt completely comfortable.
“It was essential for us to find an actor to portray our lead who can speak to the challenges and lessons that Jodi experiences from a very personal place of authenticity,” said Nzingha Stewart, the film’s director. “Ava’s ability to beautifully and uniquely showcase those attributes stood out to us in a way that we believe audiences will connect with. ‘Tall Girl’ showcases that embracing the very qualities that make you different is what allows you to overcome anything.”
Griffin Gluck (Netflix’s “American Vandal”) will star as the best friend of Michelle’s character.

Killer gummy bears, deadly ventriloquist dolls, and creepy creatures, oh my.

Taylor decides to open a locked book that unleashes Slappy the Dummy, who snarls, “Did you miss me?”
Mayhem ensues as other creatures come to life. By the end of the trailer, the kids are being menaced by a group of angry gummy bears.

The series tells the story of a world famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Devine will play Kelvin Gemstone, the youngest son of Eli (Goodman) and Amy Leigh. Described as “the edgy one,” he’s caught in the middle of the giant personalities that are Jesse (McBride) and Judy Gemstone (Patterson) and has branded himself an outsider to the church, feeling his methods are too hardcore for mainstream religion. Kelvin doesn’t have bigger ambitions for the head seat at the table but focuses his efforts on the eradication of Satan...

Netflix has teamed with director McG for alien invasion sci-fi adventure film Rim of the World.
McG, otherwise known as Joseph McGinty Nichol, has been keeping himself busy, both as a director of action flicks and as a television producer for, up until recently, shows like Supernatural, Fox's beleaguered, currently on-the-bubble Lethal Weapon, and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, and is currently developing a TV series adaptation of the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger spy actioner, True Lies. However, the fruits of his film directing resume keep heading to streaming giant Netflix, and one such project, called Rim of the World, will be no exception.
Rim of the World, is, indeed, heading to Netflix. The sci-fi adventure film will be directed by McG, set to arrive as the third production from McG’s Wonderland company to make Netflix its exclusive home, following two previous offerings in this past February’s fantasy-comedy,...

Christopher Reeve, Back To The Future, About Time, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: join us as we examine time travel in romcoms...
Love is complicated enough without time travel. When time becomes a factor in a relationship, that relationship may be in trouble. In science fiction especially, time travel is a wrinkle that both brings lovers together and keeps them separate in some temporally devastating way.
Marty McFly almost breaks up his parents before they even get together, Kyle Reese falls in love with Sarah Connor when tasked with saving her life, Captain America misses out on a dance with Peggy Carter by getting frozen for 70 years (still technically time travel, if a bit low-tech), and on TV, River Song and the Doctor experience their marriage in almost opposite directions.
But just as romance factors into timey-wimey movies like Back To The Future, The Terminator and Groundhog Day,...

The bulk of specialized business continues to come from the usual Oscar contenders that have dominated the scene for months now. The annual package of Oscar nominated shorts proved the strongest new opener this weekend.
Among limited releases, an exclusive showing of last year’s Sundance entry “Golden Exits” (Vertical) leads the field. It remains to be seen what happens to the business when these run out of steam before long in most cases.
As a reminder that winning an Oscar does not guarantee audience good will for future openers, Indian/American anti-corporate musical “Basmati Blues” (Shout! Factory) starring Brie Larson (“Room”) managed only around $8,000 in 10 theaters.
After making a big Super Bowl splash with the unexpected dropping of “The Cloverfield Paradox” after the game, Netflix opened three movies this weekend, but only one (Sundance documentary debut “Seeing Allred”) in theaters. Last year’s Toronto premiere “The Ritual” and romantic...

When Netflix announced that they were going to be releasing 80 (yes, eighty) original films in 2018, it was hard to imagine how they could possibly handle that kind of volume. At a time when more traditional outfits like Disney and Warner Bros. are distributing huge movies in small doses, it seemed unfathomable that a studio would be able to put out more than one new movie per week (even a studio that didn’t always have to deal with pesky industry headaches like shipping DCPs and informing customers that their movies exist). But here we are in early February, and Netflix’s agenda is already seeming all too fathomable.
The crux of their strategy — the streaming giant’s ace in the hole — couldn’t be clearer: They’re just going to release the movies that nobody else would.
That idea seems to be the one thing that all of the recent Netflix Originals have in common,...

Before Adam Devine and his “Workaholics” co-creators reunite on Netflix this spring in the film “Game Over, Man!,” he’ll serve as leading man in another comedy for the streaming service. In “When We First Met,” Noah (Devine) attends an engagement party and realizes that the future bride, Avery (Alexandra Daddario), is his one who got away — three years prior, their excellent first date soured when she said he had mere friend potential. Daddario is best known for her work in the two “Percy Jackson” films; she also appeared in last year’s “Baywatch” remake.

"If only I could go back and do everything differently." Netflix has debuted a trailer for a romantic comedy of sorts titled When We First Met, from filmmaker Ari Sandel. The time loop comedy is about a guy who goes on the best first date with a girl, only to end up in the friend zone. Three years later he discovers he can go back in time (thanks to a photo booth), and tries to figure out how to get it right and get the girl. But will it work? Adam Devine stars as the guy, and Alexandra Daddario as the girl. Even though this is another play on time loop comedies, it still looks hilarious. The cast includes Shelley Hennig, Andrew Bachelor, Noureen DeWulf, and Robbie Amell. This kind of came out of nowhere, but I'm curious to check it out. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Ari Sandel's When We First Met,...

I don’t know how Netflix‘s data analytics works — in fact, nobody really does — but it would appear that Adam Devine seems to score well with a certain segment of their viewers. The streaming giant already has one comedy on the way this year with the actor in “Game Over, Man!” but landing first is “When We First Met,” a romantic comedy that arrives just in time for Valentine’s Day.

What if you could go back in time to get a second chance at love?
Films have given us a wide range of time machines, from hot tubs to cars to rocket slides, but Netflix’s new romantic comedy When We First Met has a brand new time-traveling apparatus: a photo booth!
In the first trailer for Ari Sandel’s film, exclusive to People, Noah (Adam Devine) falls head over heels for Avery (Alexandra Daddario) upon first meeting her. But even though Noah thinks that they had “the perfect first date,” unfortunately for him, she just wants to be friends.

Viewers beware, you're in for a scare with the sequel to 2015 Goosebumps movie, which will now haunt theaters beginning in October of 2018 instead of September.
Deadline reports that Sony Pictures' new Goosebumps movie is now slated for an October 12th, 2018 release, moving it nearly one month from its previous September 21st release date.
Deadline also mentions that the new Goosebumps movie will star Jack Black, but his involvement has yet to be officially announced. It's not certain what direction the sequel will take, with two screenplays (one written by Rob Lieber) being considered for the film, one of which reportedly doesn't feature the return of Jack Black as author R.L. Stine. There has also been speculation that the sequel could take place at HorrorLand or prominently feature the return of Slappy the dummy, but official plot details are currently being kept under wraps.

Viewers beware, you're in for a scare! Earlier this year it was revealed that the sequel to 2015's Goosebumps is scheduled to haunt theaters on September 21st, 2018, and while we're still waiting to see what direction Sony takes the film franchise in its pivotal second installment, a director has now been revealed for the latest adaptation of R.L. Stine's popular horror book series.
According to multiple sources, including The Tracking Board, the Goosebumps sequel, referred to right now only as Goosebumps 2, will be directed by Ari Sandel, the filmmaker who won an Oscar in 2007 for the short film West Bank Story. Sandel more recently directed the high school comedy The Duff and the time traveling romance When We First Met. He was also previously announced to helm the live action film adaptation of the Mattel toy line Monster High, perhaps making him a good fit to bring Stine's creepy...

Sony has set Ari Sandel to direct Goosebumps 2, but the studio still hasn’t decided which of two versions in development he will film. One of the versions has a new script by Rob Lieber, and both are adaptations of different installments of the fright anthology novel series by R. L. Stine. In any case, Goosebumps 2 has an Oscar winning director at the helm; Sandel won for Best Short Film in 2007 with West Bank Story. He most recently completed When We First Met, with…...

Chicago – The funniest movie of the summer describes its whole situation through the title – “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.” This hilarious farce features a killer cast, led by Adam Devine and Zac Efron, and brilliant comic direction by Jake Szymanski.
The premise is simple…two brothers, who wreck every social event their family participates in, are chastised by their gruff-but-lovable father (the great Stephen Root) to get some decent dates for their sister’s upcoming wedding. Since each of the bros are between relationships, they solicit the potential dates on Craigslist. Enter two hard partying galpals (Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick), who pretend to be virtuous to get a free vacation to Hawaii (the destination wedding). What could go wrong?
