In the gaming industry, the development cycle of any game is often filled with twists, turns, and bold decisions. These decisions can change the game completely and can also bring many new things. One such example of a game where the development decision almost fully changed its genre was TitanFall 2.
Developers at Respawn were thinking that the next Titanfall should have an Mmo experience and players can loot from the open world. These changes would have been a huge departure from the original game, but developers thought it through and stuck to their unique gameplay.

Ubisoft’s new free-to-play first-person shooter, XDefiant, just released on the 21st of May for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This casual free-to-play shooter brings together locations and factions from various Ubisoft franchises, such as Tom Clancy, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and more.
Players can choose from five factions at launch, with more coming in via different seasons later on. These factions currently include Libertad from Far Cry, Echelon from Splinter Cell, Phantoms from Ghost Recon, DedSec from Watch Dogs, and Cleaners from The Division.
XDefiant Doesn’t Have a Platinum Trophy for PS5
XDefiant has more than a few things in common with classic Call of Duty games.
One major disappointment for PlayStation 5 users has been that XDefiant will not feature a Platinum trophy. Most PS5 games include this achievement, which is a reward for getting all the other trophies in the game, but XDefiant lacks in this department.

In the last few weeks, we’ve witnessed Microsoft taking drastic measures and shutting down Hi-Rush studio Tango Gameworks, Redfall creator Arakne, and the two other studios. The tech giant believes that Xbox as a brand needs “small games” to garner its old prestige and get ahead of the competition. With the shutting down of such major studios, we thought we’d see further layoffs and reorganization of studios under Microsoft.
However, in a shocking move, Xbox and Activision have announced a new studio called Elsewhere Entertainment. While the brand-new studio features industry vets who’ve worked on successful games such as The Witcher and The Last of Us, many people in the community can’t believe Microsoft is closing well-established studios to open new ones.

It’s a sad day for The Division fans, as Ubisoft has given the previously announced spin-off the axe. Revealed as part of the company’s earnings call this morning, it has decided to move on from the franchise onto “bigger opportunities.”
The game had been delayed since its announcement in 2021. The first and second one received 80 and 82 respectively on Metacritic, and fans eagerly awaited a new addition to the series.
Ubisoft Gives the Division Spin-off the Axe
The Division‘s upcoming title is confirmed to have been canceled.
Tom Clancy’s The Division and its sequel were handled by Massive Entertainment, a studio under Ubisoft. Heartland was being handled partly by another Ubisoft studio, Red Storm Entertainment.
IGN shared a statement from the company regarding the game’s cancellation:
After careful consideration, we have made the tough call to halt development on Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, effective immediately.

Fans are truly excited about the MCU’s efforts to bring back the X-Men, anticipating an epic journey ahead. It is now no secret that Marvel Studios has been diligently searching for the right writer to spearhead the X-Men movie script, with recent reports confirming that they’ve narrowed it down to two final candidates.

However, fans find it somewhat peculiar that despite the recent surge in popularity of the X-Men ’97 animated series, Kevin Feige is not considering hiring that team for the movie, and they are not shy to vocalize their concerns, to say the least.

Marvel Studios Reportedly Eyes Ryan Coogler to Direct X-Men Reboot - Main Image
Marvel Studios reportedly prepares for the much-awaited X-Men reboot after Disney acquired its rights from 20 Century Fox in 2019. Though details about this highly-anticipated project remain under wraps, the studio is allegedly eyeing Ryan Coogler to direct the film.
Coogler has been known for creating critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies, like the 2018 Black Panther.
The film didn’t just break numerous box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time by an African American director.
But it also brought the franchise three Oscar wins and several nominations, including Best Picture, a first for a superhero movie.
That said, it would be no surprise if Marvel chooses Coogler to helm its X-Men reboot.

Flagged as Ubisoft’s response to Call of Duty, XDefiant has been in the works since 2021. It concluded its open Beta phase back in 2023. Ubisoft’s free-roam sci-fi action-adventure game series Watch Dogs has received mixed reviews from critics and players alike. The game did have an interesting premise, but some felt it didn’t break out of the Ubisoft open-world formula enough to stand out among other games like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.
It seems the potential of the series has been noticed by people outside of the gaming community as well. It’s common for popular franchises to get adapted into other media, and the same is happening with a live-action movie for Watch Dogs. But is Ubisoft taking on more than it can handle?
The Watch Dogs Movie will be Created by New Regency
A Watch Dogs adaptation may not be the best idea for Ubisoft currently.
Deadline was the first to report on this matter. The movie will reportedly feature Sophie Wilde, who debuted in A24’s Talk to Me...

Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones, the pirate adventure game, has been out for days now, and despite the hype around the game, it has been criticized for ample reasons. Players have called out the developers for the game’s poor design and lackluster and boring gameplay, among other things.
Fans were excited about the game and were looking to play it, but it soon lost its charm. They have now realized that the publisher has been doing this for years with several titles in its library, including games like Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, and more, and has done it all over again.

It hardly seems real, but pirate action-adventure Skull and Bones is an actual finished game you can go buy and play right now, 11 years after Ubisoft first started production on the title and seven years since it was unveiled at a 2017 E3 presentation (remember those?). The open-world title you’ll get out of the box emphasizes naval battles, ship building, and exploration, but the game infamously changed shapes multiple times during its long, tortured development cycle, with false starts and delays turning it into one of the most troubled Aaa productions of the last decade.
Skull and Bones began life as an expansion for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag before Ubisoft turned the project into a full-blown Mmo spinoff called Black Flag Infinite to add a live service component on the ship combat mechanics fans loved from its predecessor. But those were just two iterations of the game.

Developer Fntastic has announced that they are shutting down their studio just four days after the release of their latest game, The Day Before. The developer claims that The Day Before has “failed financially” and that they “lack the funds to continue.” They then note that their future income will be used to pay off “debts to our partners.” While Fntastic says that The Day Before‘s servers will remain operational, they also confirm that they will not be able to release any subsequent significant updates for the game. The studio has also not revealed any plans to issue refunds for The Day Before at this time, and Steam has not yet released any comment about any potential expansions to their refund policy procedures in this instance.
In most cases, this news would sadly be added to the long list of studio closures, layoffs, and financial struggles that have sadly come to define 2023. However,...

Once the most wish-listed game on Steam, zombie Mmo The Day Before has seen its player count drop hugely, just four days on from its launch.
The subject of both anticipation and suspicion, zombie survival Mmo The Day Before finally launched in Early Access on the 7th December after nearly three years of slick-looking trailers and delays.
That the game actually got a release at all marked quite a moment for the game, given the common accusations that it was so much vapourware, and a bizarre legal dispute over its title that saw it delisted from Steam for several months.
The open-world survival opus’ launch has meant that players have now been able to give their verdict – and looking at the available data, it doesn’t look too pretty for developer Fntastic.

“I’ve played Fallout 76 on and off for the last five years, and I’m here to say it’s a great game!” says veteran director John Carpenter.
Fallout 76 might not have received the greatest of critical receptions on its release in 2018, but the online multiplayer RPG has a long-term fan in the shape of horror-film director John Carpenter.
Carpenter’s love of Bethesda’s Fallout 76 has been documented before. Back in 2022, he told the Av Club that he was “hooked” on Fallout 76. “I know it had bugs coming out, and a lot of it was put down, but I thought it was great,” he said. “It’s really fun to play.”

It seems the 75-year-old director remains a fan of Bethesda’s online RPG. Just this week, he was once again enthusing about Fallout 76 on X (aka Twitter), ahead of the addition of Atlantic City to the game.

Butler’s family announced that the Emmy award-winning director died on Nov. 3 in Los Angeles.

Over the years, Butler was sought out to direct pilots for shows like Hogan’s Heroes (1965), the original Star Trek (1966), Batman (1966), the first mini-series on television The Blue Knight (1973), Hill Street Blues (1978), Moonlighting (1985), Sisters (1991) and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993).

I was hopelessly addicted to Diablo 4‘s recent Early Access beta, and I’m already looking forward to losing myself in the game once more during its upcoming Open beta weekend. Then again, that’s always been Diablo‘s thing. It’s the franchise that turned classic role-playing into an addictive action experience. Competitors have come along that do loot-based action-role-playing as well as (or better) than Diablo, but there is a magic to the Diablo franchise that can be hard to replicate. When Diablo is good, it’s the surest and most fulfilling way for any action gaming or role-playing fan to lose hours of their lives.
However, as I played more and more Diablo 4, I thought a little less about Diablo and a little more about the game that has come to dominate the mainstream loot-based gaming scene since Diablo 3′s release: Destiny. Even in the game’s earliest days,...

The metrics of video game difficulty change from genre to genre. Usually, the best way to judge a challenge is by quantifying the amount of punishment enemies can take. Or to put it in gaming terms, whether enemies are “bullet sponges.” Quite frankly, way too many games depend on that trope.
It’s important to quantify what a bullet sponge actually is. As the basic term implies, it is an enemy that soaks up bullets like a sponge soaks up water. If a game doesn’t actually feature bullets, the term “damage sponge” could easily be applied instead.
While many games feature enemies that take multiple hits to beat, that term doesn’t necessarily apply to all of them. It’s usually reserved for a certain type of enemy that takes way too long to die but doesn’t provide a satisfying challenge in return. Other times, bullet sponges are...

Updated: UFC champion Conor McGregor has joined the cast of the “Road House” remake, as first reported by Deadline. Sources say that he will be playing an original character in the movie and not a version of himself, as the project does center on a former UFC fighter (Jake Gyllenhaal). Production is starting in the Dominican Republic later in August.
Earlier: You want to fight? Jake Gyllenhaal is set to lead Amazon Prime Video’s reimagining of the 1989 MGM film “Road House.”
Famously starring Patrick Swayze, “Road House” centered on a bouncer with a mysterious past who overhauls a rowdy bar and takes down local corruption in the process. For the remake, Gyllenhaal plays a former UFC fighter who, per an official synopsis, takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.

“Senna,” Netflix’s biggest and most ambitious series ever in Latin America, now has a director. Seasoned Brazilian film-tv action thriller director Vicente Amorim — whose credits include “Good” with Viggo Mortensen and “Yakuza Princess,” with Japanese American singer Masumi and Jonathan Rhys Meyers — has boarded the production.
Portraying the life of Formula One racing genius Ayrton Senna, “Senna,” produced for Netflix Brazil by Sao Paulo-based Gullane in partnership with the Senna family, is now in prep.
The eight-episode fiction miniseries will plumb “the intimacy of the man who became a national hero and conquered the world,” Netflix Brazil announced on Monday.
It looks set to be the biggest play ever by Netflix for one of its biggest markets anywhere in international. In January 2021, Netflix was reported to have already run up 19 million household accounts in Brazil, nearly as many as the streamer’s then 25.49 million for the whole of Asia.

In a recent episode of his podcast, industry reporter Jeff Grubb suggested that the previously rumored Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer project (commonly known as “Factions”) will likely not be released in its originally intended form. However, that’s only because the mode has reportedly grown significantly larger over the course of development.
“I think that no game called ‘Factions’ will ever come out, but not in a bad way,” Grubb says “[Naughty Dog] probably just decided they could do more. That’s the stuff I was able to source in multiple places and that I would feel ok in saying…it seems pretty well known in some circles that they are moving beyond their original smaller ambitions to something more and that’s as much as I can possibly say.”
Before we speculate about what that could possibly mean, it’s important to know a little more about what...

The 2022 Oscars were certainly one for the history books.
With multiple historic wins — “Coda” star Troy Kotsur becoming the first deaf man to win an acting award, and Jane Campion becoming the third woman to win Best Director, among others — and plenty of viral moments, the Academy Awards outdid themselves once again by becoming, well, undone.
As Jessica Chastain scooped up Best Actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and Ariana DeBose followed Rita Moreno’s historic footsteps and won for playing Anita in “West Side Story,” and Will Smith landed his first Oscar for “King Richard,” Hollywood’s biggest night was full of starry surprises.
And “Coda”‘s unprecedented Best Picture win cemented Apple TV+ as a cutting-edge streamer, with the platform becoming the first to take home the night’s top prize.
The film’s writer-director Sian Heder also won for Best Adapted Screenplay, and called “The Power of the Dog...

The Academy Awards can change careers in a way no other award can. Brie Larson went from winning an Oscar for “Room” to becoming Captain Marvel. Rami Malek has jumped from “Mr. Robot” to James Bond villain in “No Time to Die” in part due to his star-making victory in 2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” With that in mind, what lies in the future for this year’s Oscar winners?
With her win for Best Supporting Actress as Anita in “West Side Story,” Ariana DeBose has become the first openly queer actress of color and the first Afro-Latina star to win an acting Oscar. Next up, DeBose will join Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters and play Calypso in “Kraven the Hunter,” which is slated for theaters on January 13, 2023.
Troy Kotsur has become the first deaf male actor to win a competitive Oscar, winning the Best Supporting Actor prize for his work on “Coda.

Elden Ring’s record sales have many calling it the most successful IP in years, but some fans and industry figures are debating whether or not calling Elden Ring a new IP sends the wrong message about its success.
This debate kicked off around the time that GamesIndustry.biz and other outlets first reported that Elden Ring was not only the best-selling game of 2022 so far but one of the most successful games in recent years. In fact, many early Elden Ring sales reports noted that the game enjoyed the biggest new IP launch in Europe since 2016’s The Division.

Ralph Ahn, who played the fan-favorite “New Girl” character Tran, died on Feb. 26, the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles reported. He was 95.

Jessica Chastain’s nod as Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” marks her Oscar third nomination — yet she says this awards season is a bit of a refreshing experience. That’s because the award is no longer overshadowed by some of the ugly campaign tactics employed by the likes of Harvey Weinstein — the disgraced studio head convicted in 2020 of multiple counts of rape and sexual assault (whom Chastain doesn’t reference by name).
On this episode of Variety’s award-winning Awards Circuit Podcast, we talk to Chastain about “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and her approach to portraying the controversial televangelist. She reveals what lies ahead via upcoming film roles including playing Tammy Wynette in the forthcoming “George and Tammy” limited series, Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse” and Rawson Marshall Thurber’s “The Division.” The actor also discusses her friendship with fellow Julliard classmate Oscar Isaac,...

Warning: Contains spoilers for Doctor Who: Flux Episode 3 ‘Once, Upon Time’
Any little pig will tell you that straw is no basis on which to build. Keep that in mind when, in a little bit, it’s put to you that a new mysterious character in Doctor Who might actually be an old mysterious character from Doctor Who on the basis of a straw hat. Fair warning given.
The really silly part of all this is that the straw hat in question is by far the least memorable headwear worn by Doctor Who character The White Guardian. Yes, that’s what he wears in his first on-screen appearance in 1978’s ‘The Ribos Operation’, but by 1983’s ‘Enlightenment’ he’d upgraded quite significantly to a hat made out of bird. Or perhaps it’s more of a wig made out of bird. Or perhaps it’s a pet. Either way, there...

Exclusive: Lionsgate bought a whopper of a spec package in Wayland. In competition, Lionsgate took the spec script by Simon Kinberg off the table with a progress to production commitment to make the movie. Jessica Chastain will produce, and her The Eyes of Tammy Faye helmer Michael Showalter will direct. Production is eyed for next year.
Wayland is an ensemble drama thriller that has shades of A Simple Plan and Knives Out. Kinberg will produce with Audrey Chon (who runs his Genre Films shingle), and Chastain and Kelly Carmichael (who runs her Freckle Films shingle). Showalter will be executive producer. Chastain would certainly be welcomed to be among the ensemble cast if she wants, but right now her commitment is as producer.
This is only the second spec Kinberg wrote in the last 20 years since he broke on the scene with his spec Mr. & Mrs. Smith and then got busy writing and producing blockbusters.

Jake Gyllenhaal hangs out of a moving ambulance and shoots at a police helicopter in the explosive first trailer for Michael Bay’s action-thriller “Ambulance.”
Based on the 2005 Danish film of the same name, Universal’s “Ambulance” stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an army veteran down on his luck who turns to “brother” Gyllenhaal for help when he needs $231,000 to pay for his wife’s surgery. Gyllenhaal’s solution? A $32 million bank robbery.
Things get complicated when Gyllenhaal, who has a checkered past, mistakenly lets a cop, who ultimately gets shot, into the bank during the robbery. They steal an ambulance to use as a getaway vehicle when the heist goes awry. Of course, it turns out to be carrying said police officer and an Emt, turning the already-complicated ordeal into a hostage situation.

Coming out this weekend in North America, Yakuza Princess is a Filmland Internacional Production and Warner Brothers co-production, in association with XYZ Films. Directed by Vicente Amorim, Yakuza Princess is adapted from the graphic novel "Samurai Shiro" by Danilo Beyruth. I haven't read the graphic novel, so I can't speak to any differences in the film as it pertains to the source material, though I do find it interesting that the title of the work is based on an important, yet different character. Based on Danilo Beyruth’s graphic novel Samurai Shiro, Yakuza Princess takes a familiar story and gives it a new twist by setting it in São Paulo Brazil. Why there? Because it’s the home to over 1.6 million Japanese and Brazilians of Japanese ancestry, the largest Japanese community outside of Japan. It’s also, like most Brazilian cities, overcrowded and rife with poverty, crime and corruption. What better place to set a film about the Yakuza?
Twenty years ago in Osaka Japan we watch as a family photo session turn into a massacre as a gunman opens fire, killing everyone. In Present day São Paulo Shiro wakes up in the hospital. Badly injured and with no memory of his past. His only possession an ancient katana.

With Outriders, Square Enix and Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly deliver a brand new looter shooter experience to rival games like Destiny, The Division, and Warframe. While it’s still too early to tell just how this online experience ultimately compares to the games that have come before, it does have one major thing in common with other titles in its genre: launch day server problems and performance issues.
Server issues are pretty much par for the course when it comes to live service titles these days. It always takes a couple of weeks to get all of the online components just right after launch. It’s a shame but it’s also just the reality of opening up servers to a huge playerbase, and the fact the most studios around the world are still working remotely certainly doesn’t help.
