When it comes to the race to win an Emmy, there will be a collective buzz around the award’s 60+ categories until Sept. 15 when we find out who gets the gold.
Arguably one of the most highly competitive awards doesn’t happen at the main event but the weekend before at the Creative Arts ceremony. That’s when the winners in the four guest performer categories (which include guest actor and actress in both comedy and drama genres) are awarded for a one-time or re-curring role. (Think Jamie Lee Curtis’ two-episode performance on FX’s “The Bear” — a likely candidate.)
In looking back at early precursors, this award has quite a checkered past with numerous category name changes and head-scratching nominee groupings over the years. For example, in 1977, the bracket was called outstanding single appearance in a comedy or drama series. There was no separation by genre, so nominees included...

The The Thing (1982) episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Cody Hamman, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
John Carpenter’s The Thing (watch or buy it Here) didn’t go over well at all when it was released in 1982. Ignored by movie-goers, it was a box office failure. Reviled by critics, it even saw Carpenter being labelled a pornographer of violence by some reviewers. It was such a disappointment for the studio, they took another project away from Carpenter as punishment. But it gradually found its audience, building up a cult following. And soon, a legion of fans and critics alike began calling it one of the greatest horror movies ever made. It didn’t take long for The Thing to go from being known as reprehensible trash to being considered an all-time classic.

Apple TV has produced some top-quality TV shows. Silo, Severance, Ted Lasso, and Hijack are the titles that come to mind when you think of the relatively new streaming service.
But one show that somehow failed to grab viewers' attention was a reimagining of a mid-eighties Steven Spielberg anthology series.
A multi-award-winning original
The original series, which debuted in 1985, was nominated for 12 Emmys and won 5. It also spawned the spin-off animated series Family Dog and the 1987 movie Batteries Not Included, which was originally planned as an episode of the series before it was decided that it would work better as a feature-length film.
There was no complete story arc for the series, instead each episode was a short story in its own right. Think of it as a science fiction version of Tales of the Unexpected and you won't be far off.

“Cat Person,” an adaptation of Kristen Roupenian’s insanely popular (and equally controversial) 2017 New Yorker short story, has just debuted the first official trailer ahead of its October launch from Rialto Pictures and StudioCanal. You can watch it above and get totally creeped out.
In “Cat Person,” Emilia Jones (“Coda”) plays Margot, who starts to date an older man (“Succession” star Nicholas Braun) before discovering something much more sinister lurking beneath the surface. Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Michael Gandolfini, Liza Koshy, Fred Melamed, Isaac Cole Powell and Isabella Rossellini also star in the thriller.
“Cat Person” was written by Michelle Ashford and directed by Susanna Fogel, who cowrote “Booksmart” and directed “The Spy Who Dumped Me” along with episodes of “Amazing Stories,” “The Flight Attendant,” “Utopia” (where she worked with Jones) and “A Small Light.”

For Halloween 2021, Disney+ entered the world of R.L. Stine with “Just Beyond,” an 8-episode anthology series based on Stine’s line of comic books. The series never got a second season, with Disney+ leaving its fate hanging in the balance these past two years.
Unfortunately, we’ve learned this week that Stine’s “Just Beyond” will be one of many Disney+ original projects that are soon being deleted from the streaming service entirely.
As The Hollywood Reporter explains, “Disney is following Warner Bros. Discovery and removing under-performing titles from its streaming services in a bid to write off nearly $2 billion from its bottom line. In all, there are more than 30 shows that will be removed starting next week from the platforms in this first round of reductions. The titles will vanish starting May 26.”

It’s no exaggeration to say that filmmaking legend Brian De Palma has had an eclectic and often spectacular career, spanning over fifty years that have brought audiences many unforgettable and classic movies. 1976’s Carrie remains an often referenced (we’re looking at you Wednesday!) horror masterpiece, crime drama Scarface is all time gangster gold, while his first entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise is still perhaps one of the strongest instalments for a then young and even more sprightly Tom Cruise. However, it’s De Palma’s 1987 The Untouchables, an adaptation of the 1950’s TV serial that focuses on the attempts to bring down crime lord Al Capone, that really shows his versatility as a director. Bringing a team together to make a movie places the director at the pinnacle of the decision-making pyramid. Everyone is, after all, working to serve their particular vision. However, transforming that model into one of true collaboration can make for a much sweeter success story.
Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, the force behind this year’s “Elvis” biopic, have sustained a decades-long partnership, both personally and also professionally.
“I am in fact a serial collaborator,” Luhrmann has said of working with the same teams of people repeatedly, a method that has clearly resulted in commercial and critical success if Oscar nominations count as evidence.
The pair’s three other best known collaborations — “The Great Gatsby”, “Moulin Rouge!”, and “Romeo + Juliet” — garnered 11 Academy Award nominations among them. Four became wins for Martin’s costume and production design.
“Elvis” is a major Oscar contender this year with eight nominations reflecting Luhrmann and Martin’s efforts.

Anthology horror has been a staple of the genre for decades. Gaining popularity in the late 1950s with primetime episodes and evocative storylines on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "The Twilight Zone," these quick morality tales were easily digestible to mainstream audiences. In a time when film and television didn't yet have a complete stranglehold on pop culture, anthologies still retained the feeling of reading a collection of short stories. Many of the episodes were based on terrifying yarns penned by acclaimed authors such as Roald Dahl and Richard Matheson, resulting in some of the most memorable episodes like "Man From the South" starring Steve McQueen and the monster on a plane classic "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" featuring a very young, very paranoid William Shatner.
Rod Serling wrote what was, arguably, the most famous episode of "The Twilight Zone" called "Eye of the Beholder" where a young, supposedly disfigured woman undergoes...

One of the greatest Halloween moments in any movie occurs when Bette Midler first ascends the stage of a costume party near the midpoint of Hocus Pocus (1993). Up until that sequence, we’d seen the legendary actor/singer play Winifred Sanderson, the eldest of three witchy sisters, but now Winifred was about to become Bette Midler. Bathed in a pale green light, befitting the spooky Halloween atmosphere, Midler takes the microphone and, along with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, begins to belt a barn-burning cover of “I Put a Spell on You.”
To millennials of a certain age, it remains a Halloween anthem.
It’s also wildly different from what David Kirschner, the movie’s producer and co-writer, originally had in mind. For context, consider this: Kirschner’s first choice for Winifred Sanderson was Cloris Leachman, the perfectly deadpan, but severe, comedic presence of Young Frankenstein (1973) and The Last Picture Show...

Riri Williams has touched down in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The first look at “Ironheart” was debuted out of Marvel’s presentation at the D23 convention Saturday. Unfortunately, the video was an exclusive for those in the room and won’t be released to the public — but Variety was on the scene to describe the teaser for the rest of you.
Dominique Thorne stars as the new hero in the Disney+ series, which follows a genius, 15-year-old MIT student — taught by a character played by Jim Rash — who creates a suit of armor inspired by Iron Man. “What I’m doing. It’s important. It’s iconic,” Thorne’s Riri said in the first look footage.
The teaser showed “In The Heights” breakout actor Anthony Ramos playing a villainous role in the series. The tattooed and stacked character appears to pay Riri to steal materials from the MIT lab, and...

Ralph Eggleston, an animation whiz who was hired by Pixar in the lead-up to the release of “Toy Story,” has died following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 56.
Over the course of his storied career, Eggleston went on to serve in a variety of roles at Pixar, memorably contributing to everything from “Monsters, Inc.” to both “Incredibles” movies to “Inside Out” and “Soul.” (The animation studio didn’t release an official statement but sent an email to staff confirming the news this morning.)

Last month, we learned that Lionsgate is funding a horror film based on the novel Creepers (pick up a copy Here) by First Blood author David Morrell. At the time, it was said that Skylan Brooks (The Darkest Minds) would be one of the film’s cast members – but Deadline reports that Brooks is no longer involved with the project. Taking over the role he was going to play is Shane Paul McGhie, who is best known for playing the role of Landon in After and After We Collided. (McGhie then passed the role over to Chance Perdomo for After We Fell.)
Creepers tells the story of
a group of young urban explorers who plan to investigate an old, boarded up, seemingly abandoned hotel, only to encounter danger at every turn in the form of a competing group of hostile urban explorers seeking to find a legendary hidden treasure as...

American period drama "Boardwalk Empire" ended its five-season run, plot-wise, with the termination of Prohibition in the early 1930s. Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and his disreputable associates rose and fell alongside the crest of a nationwide ban on alcoholic beverage sales the decade prior. Speaking to Esquire at the celebrated series' conclusion in 2014, creator Terence Winter recalled Martin Scorsese's involvement in the show, which quickly evolved from producing to directing the pilot:
"HBO told me, 'You're going to go to Martin Scorsese's house and meet him to talk about the show' and I was like a girl going to the prom. What should I wear? [laughs] Literally, I got to his house 20 minutes early and walked around the block. I didn't want to be too early, I didn't want to be too late, I didn't want to appear too eager. This was one of my idols. It's really kind of goofy,...

In 2000, “The Practice” became the first drama series to receive five guest acting Emmy nominations in a single year. That record, which was matched by “House of Cards” in 2016, has now been shattered by “Succession.” Of the HBO show’s seven 2022 guest bids, an unprecedented four are in the male category. Included in this quartet of contenders is Alexander Skarsgård, who is back in the fold five years after taking home his first Emmy for his supporting performance on the limited series “Big Little Lies.”
Skarsgård earned this Best Drama Guest Actor nomination for his work in the third season finale of “Succession,” entitled “All the Bells Say.” His character, Lukas Matsson, was introduced two episodes earlier as a Swedish businessman considering selling his streaming platform, GoJo, to Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the founder and CEO of media conglomerate Waystar Royco. When Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres its second season on August 14, we're in for a lot of drama.
Raquel "Raq" Thomas (Patina Miller) is preparing her son, Kanan Stark (MeKai Curtis), to take over for her.
"You're getting to an age, Kanan, where you're going to want to start figuring out what you want for your life," Raq says in the new trailer.
Raq is well and truly in control of everything when the second season picks up, at least according to the trailer.
Kanan's life was on the line, but it looks like he's ready to start anew.
Understandably, there are some skeptics when it comes to Kanan taking over.
"I know who my son is and I know what he's capable of," she fires back.
"I can't protect you the way that I thought I could, Mom," Kanan says at one point.
It's certainly an interesting dynamic,...

More than two years after completing his ninth “Star Wars” movie, composer John Williams is returning to the Jedi fold with a theme for “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Variety has learned.
Williams has written the musical signature for the continuing adventures of the character played by Ewan McGregor, airing on Disney Plus beginning May 25. He recorded last week with a Los Angeles orchestra under tight security, sources say.
It is a coup for both Lucasfilm and Disney, considering the five-time Oscar winner rarely composes for television. His last theme for a weekly dramatic series was “Amazing Stories” in 1985, although he has written two for PBS series, and his news and Olympics themes, written decades ago, continue to air on NBC.
Williams’ “Star Wars” scores are legendary. He won an Oscar for the original in 1977 and received nominations for five of the sequels.

Exclusive: Netflix has signed an overall deal with Leah Fong, co-creator and executive producer on the streamer’s upcoming horror/thriller drama The Midnight Club. Under the multi-year pact, Fong will write and produce new series and other projects.
The first Netflix series Fong worked on was Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, on which she was a writer-producer. Lesli Linka Glatter, a veteran TV director of shows such as “Homeland” and “Mad Men,” was elected president of the Directors Guild of America on Saturday night.
Glatter will succeed Thomas Schlamme, the “West Wing” veteran who stepped down after two terms. She becomes the second woman ever to serve as president, following Martha Coolidge, who held the position from 2002 to 2003.
Glatter is one of TV’s most in-demand director-producers. She’s known for her command of complicated drama productions, and has served as executive producer on several series, including “Homeland” and “The Leftovers.”
She got her start on Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories,” and went on to direct shows such as “Twin Peaks,” “ER” and “NYPD Blue.” She is an eight-time DGA Award nominee and three-time winner, most recently earlier this year for her work on the “Homeland” finale. She’s also a six-time Emmy Award nominee for drama series directing.

Williams is set to play Matteo Jones, who’s described "as a collector of music, objects, trivia and, mainly, opinions," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Another longtime Emmy record could fall this year. Well, it could be tied anyway. John Lithgow is nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actor for his turn as Elias Birchard “E.B.” Jonathan on HBO’s 1930s-set remake of “Perry Mason.” Should he walk away a winner come Sept. 19, he’ll tie the great Ed Asner as the most awarded male performer ever with a total of seven Emmys.
Lithgow is just one of two actors from the drama series to have been nominated for an Emmy. The other is also a former winner: Matthew Rhys, who portrays the eponymous defense attorney and is nominated in Best Drama Actor. On the show, which received fairly positive reviews when it debuted but only nabbed four total Emmy bids, Lithgow’s Jonathan is an aging lawyer who acts as a father figure and mentor to Mason.
Skilled at both comedy and drama, Lithgow...
